My Tale of Woe

I ordered a dual 2.5 GHz G5 on August 9, 2 x 250 GB SATAs, 9800 card, minimal RAM as I can add that myself. The estimate was 4 to 6 weeks, with an "on or before" ship date of September 21. Last week I upgraded the shipping to overnight after learning that there was no information indicating that the order wouldn't ship by the ship date. I checked again yesterday, the ship by date, and was again told there didn't appear to be any hitches. All day, no email from Apple, no update on the website. This morning I get an email dated September 21 at 10:36 p.m. saying my ship date has slipped to 10/6 "due to an unexpected supply delay".

When I phoned to see whether it was the video card that was holding things up, I was told that there was no way the rep could access that information. I had hoped that if it was the video card, they could ship with the 9600 and send the 9800 later as many who've posted on this board have done with the Nvidia card.

Even after speaking with a supervisor, I could not find out what part of the order was responsible for the delay, and was told that if I changed the order to the 9600 card, it would go in as a new order at the end of the line. The only explanation I was able to get was that there was heavy demand for the machine. Duh! Apple evidently doesn't have enough control over their parts inventories to properly estimate when they can ship these machines.

It seems that the reps you speak with when you phone the Apple Store have access to very little information and are there mainly to assure irate customers that Apple is sorry for the inconvenience. When I said that to the supervisor she told me that they WERE really sorry, and that they don't just say that without meaning it.

They did offer to pay for the overnight shipping. I guess that's something.

So I'm still in limbo, and will post when I have information.

Just keep the faith, you patience will be well rewarded. Just know that you are not alone. I'm surprised that they didn't offer $100 off also. There is always a chance that it will ship sooner.

G5 is here...

Finally "arrived" earlier this week. I put "arrived" in quotes because the vendor had it in town since the previous Thursday, but didn't bother to let me know. They're special that way. They also didn't offer to bring it to me, so I picked it up myself. I originally ordered June 6th, so I OBVIOUSLY wasn't in any hurry to get it. Three and 1/2 months seems like a perfectly LOGICAL time to wait to a computer to me. See my previous posts in this thread for other experiences with this vendor.

The fans do rev up in After Effects and Motion, but so far nothing unusual. I may move the tower to the floor to minimize the fan annoyance. It passed the Hardware CD test without any hitches. I'm up and running, so I guess at least for me, the ordeal is over.

Good luck to the rest of you poor schmoes still waiting it out. I'll keep checking in to see how you are all fairing.

System:

Dual 2.5GHz G5 - 2GB RAM - 9800XT 256MB - 250GB HD

Congrats Andy.

[off-topic] I find it very funny that people always tend to say, it's stock except for this and that :). I'm under the impression either it's stock, or it's not stock.

hehe, I see this on a lot of mac forums.
[/off-topic]

Apparently, to some people adding extra RAM doesn't turn their order into a CTO although technically it does. So you're right in saying that an order is either stock (without ANY changes to the listed specs) or CTO/BTO.

I am soooooo frustrated!

Spent 47 minutes on the phone trying to get a hold on a supervisor at 1 800 MY APPLE... Not very helpful (or is it knowledgeable?)... They don't know anything as to when the shipment will be made. "Apple is depending on its vendors (NVidia)"

I am willing to spend $10K on a workstation and Apple can't inform me as to when my order will Ship...

Based on the many posts, I would say that Apple made an announcement they should have never made: I guess they announced the PM G5 2.5 because they promised to go to 3Ghz by EOY... It seems to me like nothing was ready in their supply chain to support the announcements made in June.
And they will pay a heavy price for this (disappointed customers, wannabe swithchers that can't switch, loss of trust...).

What's the use of having good products on the paper when you can't deliver?

Michel

Still waiting for my 2x2.5 Gz, 2x250Gb, 30" Display + Nvidia Card

June Orders

Am ready to blow a fuse with our UK dealer Cancom who seem to be unable to get any information at all on the delivery of my 2.5, bluetooth and 1 gig of ram.

It would be good to know how many other people who ordered in June are still waiting. When you here of people ordering in August and already having delivery it does nothing but make my blood boil!

something shipped!!!

WOO-hooo my 23 incher has shipped! And I got the deal splitting up the order, get the nvidia card later now :) Thank heaven for small favors. Granted the G5 slipped to 10/27. Same with the 6800, so it speaks for itself that it wont be here by then. At least I have a decent hope that the G5 will ship, and a free 9600XT....
Initial order 06/11, four month´s.. why did we all love apple again?

The fall doesn´t seem so rainy and dark anymore! a new 23 inch HD display in sight, and light at the end of the long loooong tunnel(or train) ;)

Is It For Real???

Just got the shipping notice email! Can't believe it!
When I split my order late last week they told me 10 days, but I've had an Oct 26 ship date in my order status... I guess that very nice lady on the phone wasn't lying to me after all...
Or this is all a cruel joke from the sick and twisted mind of Steve Jobs...
Yep, I bet that's it.
Anyway, I'll know in a couple of days when/if the FedEx truck shows up...

Right now I'm hoping the rest of you are finding happy little messages from Apple in your InBoxes, too.

Hi all.

Like many others I've been following this for a long time and have found the need to speak up!

I'm another UK MacLover who ordered his G5 2.5 with 6800 in June.
Still waiting of course!

Ordered 21 July, est 1st Sept, delayed to 3rd Sept, delayed to 30th Sept.

The Apple Store in Ireland let it slip that all orders with the 6800 would be delayed til (mid?) October. No surprise there. Then the nice lady refused to repeat her sentence, and I have been told that there are no further updates!

It's so bad it's FUNNY! :)

What's funnier is that the lovely people at the UK Apple Store don't know what emails they have sent me!

Oh and the Order Status page doesn't update at all! (Still says "on or before 1st Sept"). A girl with a gorgeous Irish accent just said, "oh yeah.. funny that, isn't it?!!"

Funny?! He..he hhhhee... he. (twitch).. he... heee... :D

My experience so far:
I placed my G5 Dual 2.5 (with 30 inch cinema display and 6800 card) order on 8/18/2004 and its shipping date was pushed to 10/24/2004 two days ago (second delay). I called Apple and had them send me the machine with a 9600 card for now, pulling the date back to 10/5/2004. The Apple rep stated that the 30-inch displays were on hand in a warehouse but could not be shipped without being tested with the 6800 cards.

My question here is: should I have pushed for more compensation than that? It seems as though a few members on here have been able to convince Apple to throw in some 'goodies' to make their wait more bearable. I don't remember a wait this bad since waiting for the G4 500 MHz Sawtooth to ship back in 1999-2000. I hope a G5 Dual 3 configuration doesn't come out as soon as my order finally arrives. :)

Got mine also, September 22, 2004 8:49:29 PM JST Shipping notice from Apple store Japan. Wonder how long it takes now? I also hope everyone that's waiting gets one of these happy notices soon.

Still no data on my order tracker

I don't know why I expected it to be any different than the misery of the rest of the order process.

It's like a new form of torture. Maybe they get 5p for every time we hit Refresh? ;)

The worst part is knowing that my machine is travelling from United Kingdom to Netherlands (to pick up the bloody APP -- why they don't have these in the same factory as the computers I don't know) back to United Kingdom.

This is to ensure I don't get it by Friday, I'm sure of it!

Grebo, no shipping data here either. Have you tried ringing Applestore? Do you think they have any other info?

Cheers

Grebo, Ganders, Mfx etc.

I rang Apple to track my G5. They were quite helpful, but not very good news. Some of this we have heard before. She said that my G5 had left Cork on the way to The Netherlands, where it would join my 23" Display. Once they are together, after a brief period of getting to know each other, they will depart for London. This process can take 5-7 working days. The numbers we have been given will work on the TNT tracking system, but only after they have left The Netherlands. She said that I shouldn't expect it until this time next week.

At least it's on its way. I hope it enjoys Holland. This might be just to discourage me from ringing back before then. We have seen several people recieve their orders much quicker.

I think i'll take the day off from work today to drive up to Venray, Holland. It's only a 2 hours drive, and I 'll know for sure i'll be returning with a G5 2.5 and a 23" display :D

;)

Hi, 6800/9600 team :)

Same bad news here ... TNT doesn't know anything about my command :(
For Apple, shipped since 09/21. But still unknown at TNT ...

I asked more infos to Applestore, and i'm waiting for their answer.

Maybe my estimate date of "middle of next week" for the delivery at my door was too optimistic ?

Waiting since june, and no special care from Apple for speeding up things ... What a deception :(

Good idea ... And with a little tour to Paris, you can deliver mine too :D
Lightspeed, compared to TNT !

Sorry for greebo and glassbathroom, traveling to UK is a litte more complicated :)

Ha ha, like I have any control over this!!

Yes, I rang too -- only my agent said 3-5 working days (this time) specifically saying, you should get it any time between this Friday or Tuesday of next week. :(

She also said she couldn't get any joy out of the TNT tracking system either -- and that when it finally does have some data, there should be quite a lot of activity. I have had this experience in the past where the data trail gets populated the day before or morning of the delivery. Happened with my iPod (2nd Gen) years ago...

Still, we're better off than 'on or before 24 September' aren't we?

Not a single Powermac or powerbook will be shipped this, and next week by Apple Benelux.

Their fiscal year ends september 30th. and they cannot sell until then.

Then again, their backorders keep growing and growing and have until now shipped only very very small quantities of dual 2.5. (big news  )

that's what Apple Benelux told me today.

so it will be october or later in any case.

Also techdata, my distributer, has put the changing deliverydates to a halt since yesterday. Basically, the prediction now is: It is gonna ship, but we hell don't know when. So no shipdate anymore with techdata.

Now I'm completely in the dark.

What the hell?? What kind of explanation is that? I don't believe they can't sell anything because their fiscal year ends. Seems like they don't know jack **** either. C'mon, this is getting more and more ridiculous by the day.

Joy, happy, joy joy, it'll only take 4 months for my computer to arrive!

Djeezes, and to make things worse, my dealer doesn't seem to be responding my emails anymore, nice. Now I'm completely satisfied with the customer service from apple AND my dealer.

been a nice ride so far, don't know if i'll buy a ticket for another one though

Well,

if they can't sell anything this or next week, they won't be selling iMacs either, no accessoires, nothing will be shipped?

This can't be right, do you believe it Ge4-ce? I find it very hard..

I think they feel the heat of our breath in their neck, and they try to make any excuse they can to ship us of for another week.

If they have excuses until the machine ships, they feel good themselves. As soon as they must admit that they have failed or have really big problems, then they actually say: "we know we are wrong and we have to compensate in one way or another"

as long as they put the ball in anotherones camp, no-one gets hurt, only we do.

I don't believe sh*t anymore. they just try to keep us busy. I really am curious about the letter. Will they respond? will I speak with someone who has the power to explain what's really going on? probably it will be a waist of paper, ink and 4,5 buck of shipping cost..
