Congrats! Just curious, are you able to get any tracking information for this shipment?

Thanks, it feels like we should be sharing cigars right about now, doesn't it...

No, there's no shipping info yet:

The Pioneer DVR-107D (which came with the powermac G5) is capable of
Writes:

DVD-R Writability Improvement
+R Writability Improvement
DVD-RAM Playability Improvement
CD Playability Improvement
+R DL DoubleLayer Playback Implemented (NOT Record)

after a simple firmware upgrade written by pioneer themselves.

Here's a flasher utility, and a copy of the firmware (if someone has an english version, please post it):

[EDIT: OK I think I have all the info here now. More interesting stuff here

So what you you're saying, without saying it, is (in bold for extra effect)

pssst... you were WRONG

The Pioneer 108/A08 is their first model capable of Dual-Layer (or Double Layer as they call it) recording.

I have an issue... My g5 has been departing from the sort facility in california since friday... It is due to be delivered tomorrow... in syracuse? i think it should have hit another sort facility by now if it was going to make it here by tomorrow.
Mine just left the sort facility in Californiaa couple of hours ago, hopefully yours is in the same shipment.
Apple upgraded me from regular ground shipping to 2 day service, so I assume/hope they're being flown out...
(I really hope it's true because I'm planning on skipping work in order to wait for FedEx)

Est ship date WITH 6800?!

Just a quick question for everyone, but particularly for the UK:

If the Nvidia 6800 stays with the order, what are your est ship dates?

Ordered 2.5 21st July, est ship date is 30th Sept! :)
Yeah, right.

Yeah, right.

I believe that most of us who had been originally given an order date of 08/31, and then delayed to 09/13 have now been delayed to 10/15. I have also seen others with an EST of 10/22.

Been havin' toooooo much fun! sorry........

The "Beast" shipped 09/21, arrived 2PM 09/22, been very bizzy since! ;-) The thing is FAST an' spooky quiet, but keep in mind, this is my first Mac, so.... I may not be able to do it justice just yet. Fed-Ex man wanted to know why the box was so heavy. Guess that means it's the only one in my area. ;)

Slughead,

Have you tried this out? I visited the links. The French translation leaves me bit unclear of how you actually do this with botching things up or risks, etc. Other things like this needed a Windows PC to do the flash part. Has anybody here on the thread tried this with your 2.5? I'm game if it's cool and does all it says. The Region X is an added bonus.

Thanks! ;)

Ok. I am still checking out this thread to see how many are still waiting. I'm sorry & do hope they come soon.
But I did notice this post & was wondering. My 2.5 G5 came with HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082B which I don't think is Pioneer. All the machines don't seem to have the same DVD writers. Be sure before you try this update.
BTW- The machine is still AWESOME! :D HANG IN THERE GUYS!

What Super Drive is it, then?

Yeah, mine too. What do we have? Anybody know? Hitachi?

I'm still looking for confirmed "IT WORKS HOORAY" reports.

I've gotten one possible linkage to the update and a broken drive, but that's likely unrelated.

I think people are doing it and just not reporting it because it works. After all, Pioneer wrote the firmware...

How super is YOUR Superdrive?

I did a search & I think it is made by LG, but I could be wrong.

Yes, all the searching I could do this AM provided LG as mfgr. This link is for a model called GSA 4082B http://tinyurl.com/68q8s and my hunch is that the 'S' stands for the silver coloured chassis, and a GWA would be a white-coloured chassis. Mind you, the silver would match the brushed aluminium enclosure. Oh well.

The misleading thing is they claim 'dual' in their description, but they're merely referring to DVD-R and DVD+R compatibility.

It's less than £60 to buy a new Pioneer 16x DVD+/-R/RW DoubleLayer-capable recorder (the 108) from Dabs in stock right now.

LG is a reputable company with a good track record. My monitor is an LG Flatron 1920G. They say if you trace any Japanese company back to its founding company, there are really only two big corporations. Yamaha owns Pioneer owns Panasonic owns Technics... Could be an urban myth.

STILL no data on my order tracker (third day now)

The only explanation Apple can give for the fact that the tracking URL they provide us with still has no data of my computer's whereabouts is that 'the logistics team' have failed to put in the consignment number -- and tried to assure me that it IS on its way to me, but probably won't arrive until early next week.

Going to be a long weekend!... :(

Nothing here yet either. I am completely in the dark. This must have been what it was like BEFORE TRACKING.

Another day of spotting orange vans heading in the wrong direction!

Haven't you heard? That's because Apple releases new the 3 GHz PM next Tuesday and you're gettting upgraded. :D

Nada from tracking...

I think it can be arranged, but at a cost of £150 or something outrageous like that!

First, you need to have a number their system recognises as valid though!

Anyone else have noise from G5?

Hey folks,

so glad that I finally got mine in a week ago. For those who wait - cheer up, it is worth it ;)
Anyway, I noticed that it is in fact quiet, but I do hear some sort of "humming". It is not really loud, but it has some weird frequency that is a bit annoying - it might also be a fan, but as far as I can tell it is neither of the two big CPU Fans, nor is it the ATI 9800 XT Fan (I stopped it for a sec - no difference).
I have heard a few Dual 2's, and if I remember correctly you couldn't hear them at all.
So I wonder, if this is normal with my 2,5? Maybe some of you folks know what the deal is...?

cheers

Somebody's tracking system works

I've received notification that my supplemental 300GB HD for my new G5 has arrived. Ordered from Dabs, delivered by ParcelForce.
