Hey folks,

so glad that I finally got mine in a week ago. For those who wait - cheer up, it is worth it ;)
Anyway, I noticed that it is in fact quiet, but I do hear some sort of "humming". It is not really loud, but it has some weird frequency that is a bit annoying
cheers

You know I hear the same thing, however, the slightest background noise cancel's it out and it really is not bothersome. Here is the downside to a MAC, they are so quiet that the slightest noise alerts us to trouble .. PC's have the huge noise going on all the time that you can never hear anything but fans .. :)

Yeah true. Especially the dp G4, that was sooo quiet. And all pc's are really noisy, even my watercooled one that has no fans at all, it's deafening.
Just shows that generalisations aren't right. In general ofcourse
:D

insult to injury.

I've just had a bit of a 'go' at a poor Apple Representative on the other end of the phone. I criticised them for handing out a URL to us that is providing NO DATA whatsoever regarding our shipment. This is approaching the fourth working day. It's absurd!

She said no data will appear until TNT picks it up.

HANG ON

Where has it been since we received our shipping notices on Tuesday morning?

'Oh, well, we use another courier to ship it from the UK to Holland, and then TNT picks it up and sends it back to the UK.'

Uh, yeah.

Then she gave me the 5-7 working day quote (I reminded her I've already received several 3-5 working day quotes, and am now guessing I should be multiplying these to get the ACTUAL delivery date.)

She also had the nerve to grill me on what specifically was on the order (for security reasons, no doubt). I told her that we are getting fed up with the complete lack of communication and that they should perhaps give us a URL for the first leg of the journey AND a link to the second leg once it becomes available -- and the further suggestion that maybe they should just ship directly from Ireland to the destination rather than add an other few days delay to the customer.

Grrrrrrr

And how long does it take to fly from Ireland to the Netherland? Four days! Who is paying for the needless trip? Oh yeah....us.

Great news beatnik and PhantomVI. Hope that both of you have something to occupy your minds. I know from experience that waiting like that can be a longer process. Having them so close, yet so far.

It has that?! OMG!!! That's freggin' awsome! I had no clue! And here I was looking into figuring out how I was going to migrate my G4 into my new G5!!!

NICE!!! It just keeps getting better and better..!

Well, I'm writing to you all on the DP 2.5!
About to run the hardware test, but I think everything will check out okay. This thing is so quiet! And fast! I'm really in disbelief...
I'll report back later after I've really given it a workout. In the meantime, good luck to everyone still waiting.

Still Waiting

I am new to your group, but I have been reading for several weeks. I placed my Edu order on 7/27/04.
2.5GHz PowerPC G5 065-4803
512 MB DDR400 (PC3200)-2X256 065-4933
250GB Serial ATA-7200rpm 065-4982
8x Super Drive (DVD-R/CD-RW) 065-4928
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL

to ship on or before 9/15, well as you can guess the 15th came and it was bumped to 11/05. So I thought I would do what I had seen some of the others do. I told them to send it with a 9600 and put the 6800 as a separate order. Now the order has a 11/15 date.

I don't know if I helped or made it worse. I guess time will tell.

Good luck to all and may GOD bless you all.

It would be funny

If it weren't true!

NB: I asked a guy later in the afternoon if I could have a URL to track the progress from Ireland to the Netherlands, and he said 'no'.

I asked if someone down the street from the factory ordered one, would it still have to go to the Netherlands first, and he said 'yes'.

Can you believe it?!

Apple Rep claims my delay is due to the 9800XT

All right, please somebody tell me if this is happening to them.

I ordered a CTO dual 2.5 with a 9800 and BT on June 11, two days after the release. My order was scheduled to ship july 30, then Aug 20, then Sept 12 now it says Oct 20. The Apple rep told me today that the problem with my order was due to the 9800 XT Radeon card. I said fine, drop me down to the 9600 and just ship it. They couldn't do that because my order was already aknowledged by the manufacturer. They're looking into a loaner for me, giving me the impression that there is no way that my order will be ready even by Oct. 20. My biggest concern, besides the fact that I'm a videographer and my clients should be freaking out that their not getting their products from me, is that I'm eventually going to get the computer at the same rip off price that I'm paying, but a newer updated version will be released shortly after I get it.

I truely don't know what to do, I'm confused, angry, but pretty much just in shock that I'm even going through all of this for a simple computer.

I've been using Macs for a long time now, and it's never even been an option to use a PC but the more I think about it . . . Is Mac really worth it??? I'd like to think it was, I just don't know.

Well,

Welcome to my world..

I am a huge Mac fan. I converted at least 20 people to buy a Mac. (the ones who have done this know you have to be very convincing) I bought a topmodel G4 with a 21" display when I was 18: about 5000 bucks. bought a Powerbook 15" topmodel when I was 21: about 3200 bucks. order a top G5 with 23" aluminal display and nvidia 6800 now, at age 24: 5500 bucks.

I am a student btw, so money does not come easy and I worked bloody hard for every cent. my reward for all of this??

My G5 is ordered july 1th, it hasn't been shipped now, and will not ship until I think november.. wich is... freaking 5 months! 5 ordered a Stock model from the beginning and the 6800 as a seperate thing.

Apple ships less than 2 units a week in Belgium.

I am in my final year of animationfilm, with a 3D project that has to be finished by X-mas. It seems more and more that I have to use my powerbook until then. WAAAWW with a freaking 1 ghz.. Future is looking bright..

Ge4-ce..i'm with you on this one buddy. I had a real tough day today. Had trouble focusing on work because of all the troubles this thing has brought me.
I thought of cancelling my dealer order, to order online, but then I would have troubles because the display is already reserved under my name. Talked to my folks about it, to my friends, needed a vent so..

I'm back to 'normal' again now, i'll call the dealer tomorrow cause they haven't been responding to my emails since wednesday. I'll ask them how they see the situation and what my options are.

Well, I guess i'll be picking up my 2 maya books tomorrow and read them without the option to play with it on my mac..for at least a couple of weeks.

why are we all complaining?

i know what it's like to be in anticipation and have a shipping date bumped again and again. i was waiting for the rev b g5 since feb (when we really SHOULD have seen it). with apple's history i still begin to question why people are even getting worked up over the bumps on their ship dates. if it's that big of a deal cancel the order...but none of us really have that intention...because we're just here to vent. lets all just relax. you'll be glad when you get it. i know the machine = money, but take into mind that apple has a history of product delays ESPECIALLY with new announcements. when they do start to catch up with orders it's always in little limited supply bursts. save yourselves the hastle in the future and don't order the latest and greatest to avoid having to deal with this situation again. order middle of the road or something different...oh i know i know "why pay premium dollar for technology that's going to get updated in just a month or two after i get it" welcome to the world of tomorrow...technology is going to update itself faster than you can afford to keep pace. just get what you need while the getting's good. save yourself the stress and the headaches and the pain it is to deal with apple's reps on the phone. or...gasp...go to pc...but you already know what you're getting into there. good luck, hope you all get your computers soon so you can be put to rest.

I ordered 8/31 with the 9800xt and extra ram.
I just recieved a shipping notice for today 9/24.
No FedEx confirmation yet, but from what an Apple rep tlod me, I should expect to get it next Wed.

The skinny

So I am now writing to you all from my brand new G5 2.5, and let me tell you, so far people are correct - it IS worth the wait.

I haven't really done anything too arduous with it yet, having spent my entire afternoon migrating from my old G4, but I have opened up Photoshop a couple times just to watch how quickly it opens.

Anyway, good luck to you all and continue using this in the meantime, as it has proven to be pretty good therapy for me.

In the case of the G5, I do not agree with you: When I ordered mine, there was nothing available, exept some stale imacs and the eMac with its ugly crt screen. The new iMacs weren't even revealed, 1st generation G5's were out of stock. My dealer still has an empty store, and anything I ordered had a waiting list of 6 weeks and who was able to predict what was going to be there faster?

I must be lucky

It has arrived. Well sort of. Just got a phonecall from my dealer. He will deliver it to my house on tuesday. That's pretty quick: I ordered August 13th, so it has only been just over 6 weeks. What can I say? I'm happy I think. Am I happy? Uhmm, I don't know....yes I'm happy. Have to prepare now. Financial things, food for a couple of days, cut the phone off. What more, what more? What if it's DOA, what if I don't like it, what if, if uhhh, o jeez, disaster. What if the power goes down on tuesday, of there is a flood. Maybe disaster strikes at work and I can't stay home? Have to prepare, have to prepare, must think, must think clearly now. Soon we will be together, yes, soon, my precious, soon.

Well, I know that Apple has a history in delays. But 5 MONTHS!! that's just redicules! Apple used to announce new powermac every 6 months. That would mean that if I'm lucky, I'll see a new machine announced, when I have mine a month. And if I'm not lucky, I'll see a speedbumped machine before I have mine!! Delay are common, but not that long. And again, they should keep us more informed. At this point, even my distributor, where I buy my Mac, stopped with predicting deliverydates! now the website "basically" says: "will be delivered sometime"

Are you going to throw it into a flaming river of lava? your 'precious'? If so, I have such a river running through my house...

Do you realise how luck you are? I hope you have a lot of fun with it. I just don't understand howcome you have it allready and we haven't. Since I ordered july 1th through a distributer, and normally, distributers supply resellers, and resellers supply customers.

What reseller do you have?

No, I don't think I fully realize how lucky I am. I feel sort of numb. It just can't be true, maybe I wasn't awake yet after all. And if I was going to throw it in a river of lava, I wouldn't call it "my precious".
:D .
I think the major reason I'll get it before you do is because I didn't order a Geforce 6800 with it. My reseller also claims I got it faster because I ordered without modem, and they had some troubles with the modems. I don't think that's true, and I don't really care either.
Btw, my reseller is Apple Centre Centraal Station . This is in Amsterdam.
