2.5GHz Dual G5 Powermac shipments

I heard that the 6800 was delaying the delivery of Duali 2.5 + 30"... But from this post (for instance) it appears that the dualie 2.5 is delaying the entire stuff.. I would bet that the dual 2.5 is having some serious technical flaws and that they delay everything.

How is it that an order like the one above is delyed that much when no 6800 or 30" is involved?

Michel

Michel,

I'm not sure why the dual 2.5GHz systems w/o the 6800 are being delayed so long.

In my case, I placed an online CTO order for a dual 2.5GHz PM with the 6800 and 30" monitor on 8/18. On 9/21, I received an email indicating a delay on shipping to 10/22 (which is the same delivery date as the 30" display). While not actually saying it, the email strongly implied that the delay was due to availability of the 6800 card.

I called the Apple Store (on 9/21) and after some discussion convinced them to breakout the 6800 card. After they changed the order the ship date for the G5 system (w/o the 6800 card, but with the low end ATI card installed) was set to 10/5 and the 6800 card, now separate, is 10/22 (the same as the 30" monitor).

I noted on the online order status that my G5 system shipped on 10/4, a day earlier than the expected date. FedEx tracking shows my system on a truck for delivery today. (This is FedEx Ground, but since the system shipped from Sacramento, CA, the transit time is only a day or two from there to my home).

So it seems that delays could be due to the 6800 cards. But then, who knows for sure. :)

G5 PCI Slots

I've been working with a DP 2.0 (rented) until my DP 2.5 arrives (lord knows when that's gonna happen). -ordered June 16th

I installed Digidesign's HD3 Accell (3 PCI cards), and couldn't get over the poor design for the PCI card fasteners. (hard-to-reach screws)

Maybe I missed something. (a hidden latch of some sort  )

there are so many friendly solutions for PCI card fastening today, I'm surprised that a state of the art machine like the G5 couldn't adobt a better method.

Apparently, my machine shipped from Cork, Ireland to my dealer yesterday.

Finally!!! Congrats Klaus! In my case, I was told the machine would arrive about a week after my dealer received the shipping notice - it actually took 4 days. And Belgium is a lot closer to Ireland than Finland is. :)

Well, I hope so! He's been shipped since yesterday, so tomorrow he's been under way for 2 days :)

The wait is almost over for me..hope all yours will be over soon, I really hope so. Either way, i'm staying here for a while, until all regulars have received theirs!

luxury problems...

Ok, my G5 should be here thursday, after near four months since I ordered It. The TNT guy said it would atleast.

My god the waiting!!! Its much worse now that I know that it will aqtually be here, but in a nice way, as oposed to the silent torture it was waiting months for it to ship

Klaus: I initially ordered 11 Of June, maybe well get them at the same time!!! How is your 23 ACD holding up? Mine has the pinkish gay syndrome... Don´t know if I can accept it, as I do graphics.

edit: sorry Klaus didn´t catch that your 23 alu ACD hadn´t arrived. Please post how it behaves when you get it :)

maybe picking one up in te netherlands

A apple-dealer in the Netherlands received 8 stock dual 2,5's (I had read about it on a Dutch mac-forum - thx Klaus for pointing me at the new thread entry). Called them immediately, but the machines seems to be misdelivered (sound very plausible with the awesome logistic power of apple) and they are not sure they can actually sell them. Tomorrow (Wednesday) I will call them again, hoping they confirm me that they are available for sale. If that is the case, I will pick one up on Thursday.

It is an 3 hours drive, but man, its worth it. I cannot stand it anymore, waiting, never knowing what or when,...
So, maybe I will have a machine on Thursday :D

The other story (ordered machine from dealer in Belgium on 10/06) has no ending (so far I know). I called apple several times for more info, called my dealer for an apple order-number (because apple asked me for it) - but just this week the apple-sales-woman of my dealer is in vacation, and the other employee's have no idea where to find that number (somewhere on a web-site, but what site, what is the code...). I hope they have the code tomorrow, so I can check with apple. If they don't have an idea (again) or can't promise I have the machine this week, plan B (driving to the Netherlands) has a go!
(again thx to Klaus for a phone number from an apple representative who is really trying to help, an not "what can I tell tell this person so I wont hear him anymore as long as possible".

Glad to know you are going to enjoy your dualie 2.5

Jerry,

I proposed Apple the same stuff but got less lucky... I am in the exact same situation ordered 8/14, scheduled 9/21, pushed to 10/22... I suppose you won't get your 30" since they need to test it with the card prior to shipping.

I was able to get some stuff from Apple to compensate for the delay...

But my G5 is still scheduled for 10/22 .... Hopefully they will respect this date... After that I guess that I will try to discuss options such as " Give me the 3.2 ghz instead when it is released by Apple in January!!!!"

Hey, I hear you guys smirk.... I have the right to dream, no?

It has arrived, but he prefers to leave it at the store till his computer arrives to.

Jep, that's true, it's been waiting for more than 2 months now, it'll have gathered quite some dust already I guess :D .

And regarding the pink : I spoke with this apple rep the other day, another apple guy told me he was a real tech 'guru'. So I went up to him and asked about the pinkish tone on the display, and I said the issue could be seen on a promotion stand about 10 meters away from us, where 2x20" were used for a HD-setup. Along with a 23" acd for the actual HD-output.

Well, I didn't see any grey finder windows until at the last, but boy, was I impressed with the color and quality of the HD-movie that they showed. It was truly awesome. Anyway, at the end I saw this finder window, and noticed a slight pinkish cast, like seen on so many other displays.

The 'expert' said it could be because of the situation and light the screen was put in, but since the 20 and 23" were next to each other, that didn't have a chance. Next thing he said that a screen like that used in an environment where color accuracy is very important should be calibrated with a hardware device, like the one from gretaMcBeth or what is it. This is partially true, but all the other people don't have this, and can't afford it as well, so they should have a kind of pinkish tone to the finder windows?

I'm fairly convinced that if my screen has the same pinkish cast, i'll be able to rectify it through expert calibration (software).

To be sure, i'll be testing the display at the store, and try to calibrate it there, next to a 20", so I can be sure. Hope they'll let me do that.

I am glad you finally got your ship notice. :)

thx tamtam, but like you, i'll be sticking around here until the other guys receive theirs

thx to the others as well, it was a great period (excluding the horrific wait) and hope to see you all a lot on macrumors and macfreak (to the fellow belgian and dutch peeps!) :D

My order got pushed back again, from shipping today for my G5 to 10/20/2004 and from shipping 10/8/2004 to 10/22/2004 for my 30" cinema display. I placed my initial order on August 18th and this is the third delay...on top of that, I opted for the lesser Radeon 9600 card to speed up the order two weeks ago. I did manage to get 75 bucks off my order after calling Apple but that pales in comparison to their fictitious shipping dates...Apple really needs to get their act together. The first delay was expected, the second was annoying but the third is ridiculous.

This nvidia 6800 delay makes me wonder what they do with the G5's that are supposed to be configured with such a card.

Do they stockpile these until they have the cards, put it in, test it and send it to the customer? Or are they simply selling those G5's to other customers with the 'regular' videocards?

Just asking myself this question, because when they do come (the 6800s) and the G5 hasn't been produced yet, those poor guys will have to wait even longer for their entire setup.

It has arrived!!!!!

I got my G5 2.5, 512K, 250G, and 9600. It arrived on Monday. I was told that the 6800 card would be here by the end of the month. I was using a G4 Digital Audio 733. This new G5 screams.

I hope that you all get yours soon.

Anybody know how long it usually takes for them to get here? People who ordered online may have a clue about this.

My dealer thinks it'll be about 2-3 days from now, hopefully I can get it in time for the weekend. Not counting on it for the moment though.

Cheers guys

Congrats Klaus,

Glad to hear the good news for you!!!

Enjoy your new toy.

Dual 2.5GHz PowerMacs Shipping/ well not with the 6800!!

Just got my ship date bumped again. This time it's only for an additional week so we must be getting closer. I ordered a dualie with 6800 July 27th and this is my third OBB. Rumors and ship dates point to mid/ late Oct for first delivery of the card. The Apple rep who was on the G5 team refused to split my order or give me any additional compensation - he was really kind of a dud. But my ship date was only bumped a week to the 15th so I wasn't making too much of a fuss. He said something about Apple customers wanting the computer to " be right" when it does ship. I agree.

I wonder if us BTO customers with non-split 6800 orders will get our computers before they ship the cards to you lucky guys who have already received your dualie's?? Or maybe they're just ship a huge batch to everybody and we'll all have a party?!

I'm a photographer with a back-log of jobs with digital processing to do and working on this G4 667mghz Powerbook is killing me. I've got the new 23inch HD display sitting in a box waiting for something real powerful to run it. I'm waiting too.

And mk_in_mke what were you able to get Apple to give you? Did they previously give you some compensation?

WAAAAWW KLAUS!! Your shipped! I'm so happy for you !! But can you give me the name and number of the woman which handles complaints?

Because mine at techdata is bumped to Octobre 27th! I HATE IT!

That would be a whole 4 months! just for a stock machine.. ridiculous..

Hi guys, my hunch -- and it's more of a suspicion than anything -- is that the 6800 cards run hot themselves (most of these things have fans on them that dwarf blow dryers by comparison). Add that to the already unstable (in my case) thermal mixture in that chamber, and you've got a very unstable product configuration.

thx invalpsion, kornyboy, ge4-ce

It's not here yet, it's only the word of my dealer, but I hope I have it for the weekend.

Ordered my 2.5GHz yesterday from the Apple Store. The lady told me that I 'might' get it in about 3 weeks as the 6800 card is causing delays for some G5's been sent out.

Seems that they are using 'other peeps' G5's to satisfy newer orders until the 6800 problems are sorted.

6800 SHIPPED!!!!!!!

Congrats pulpJEDI, you are the first to shout it out here, there are probably going to be a lot of shipping notifications in the next days, as you ordered quite late, and a LOT of people ordered the 6800 months before you.

Unless the order queue is completely f*cked up (again)

How to install 6800?

Is it hard installing this monster card? Everywhere I´ve read about it they say you have to buy a new power unit etc. (+the apple one is HUGE) I´ve installed all sorts of components, ram and pci cards, older agp gfx cards.

Any thoughts?
