160Gb for €80 and I bought two 250Gb drives (raid: mirrored, so I do not have to back-up anymore).

I hope you still DO backups -- software errors deleting files and file system problems are mirrored too - and may overwrite or destroy your precious data.

Mirroring is only a good protection against harddisk failures.

Well, 2 years ago, while in school, we had to learn 3d studio max, and made 2 final projects. One camera sweep through an interior of your choice, the other was a character anim. project.

Since those classes weren't really in dept, I wanted to do some more after hours, and then bumped into maya. I prefer maya, for the app itself, but also for the fact that there's a port for os x!.

I'll be doing characters and demo reels mainly, well, I hope I will be, cause I ain't no expert yet, but I know what to do during the weekends, and it's a lot of fun, and that's what it's all about ain't it?

you are right. I will still have to make back-ups, but if one disk crashes, I can still work. Maybe it is best that I buy an external disk to back-up to.

Ok I'm going to be real mad... No offence to all the guys that received their machines. But WHAT THE F*CK is Apple doing here.. My stock model wich I ordered July 1th, will probably be shipped november... (If I'm lucky)

This is INSANE!! what are they doing? People who ordered later get theirs first!

My computer wich I paid 3000 bucks, will be old when I get it! If I did not need it very very badly, I would cancel it! But I'm outraged!

I'm loosing controle over here! Klaus, Say something supportive... I called Apple for the kazillionst time. I think I've had about every coworker of Apple on the phone, and nobody seems to know a thing, and the ones who say they will investigate and call me back.. (yeah right when ???)

The Apple Benelux receiptionist must go crazy now.. Like.. Oh boy it's him again...

For a $3,000 dollar computer I would expect better support and delivery from Apple. After receiving a DOA 2.5 unit after only a 3 week wait, they wanted me to take it in for support. I made them go thru accounting hell to get me a full refund. Just went to the Apple Store here in North Carolina last night and they are saying they will have Stock 2.5's on site in 10 days, I'm just gonna get out there and power it up before going home with it. I can feel your pain. Apple customer service is the worst in the business. You need to get something out of them for your patience, I would demand it and don't be afraid to get your money back and put them thru hell if that is what it takes.

I know how you feel, I had some of those moments as well, a little too many if you ask me. Don't care if she thinks "him again", just call back and ask for that mrs muller woman until she can tell you something that explains how this can happen, or until she can give you some positive news. I'm afraid there will be nothing else to do.

I'm still waiting as well, it'll be 4 months, or 18 weeks, or 126 days when I do get to see my machine..

Keep it up Ge4-ce, there are still others like you, macetaria got one from holland, the only problem is you have a nice discount with techdata right? So you don't want to go some place else, and that's completely understandable

I agree, the only thing that you can do is to call. That is what they are getting paid to accomplish. The important thing is to have a friendly positive attitude.

No one would ever think that you are anxious to get your machine because you know the exact time of waiting. :D

It would really help if Apple would decide once and for all whether they truly want to be a computer company or not. These boards have gotten positively stagnant. The only news we ever here is about the Ipod. The Ipod is nice but I really need is faster and more powerful computers. If Apple wants to only tinker with the computer business then they should let us know so we can find other ways to handle are computer needs.

Hehe.. You could be surprised how low the profitmargins with Techdata on AppleStuff is... I thought about ordering it there just out of convienience.. Profits (and thus my discount) is as low as 2, max. 3% so I could have ordered it straight from applestore. But now I've waited so long, canceling and then reorder it elseware will probably put me even further..

I will call again and again and again..

i'm starting to wonder where's the sense in buying a top of the line system if by the time you get the machine, they're ready to role out a new one. by the time i get my machine, the semester will be half over, and the machine will be past 3/4 of it's production run. i'm already used to using the school's g5 towers. maybe i should just cancel and wait till the next system. then again, it could take them another 3 months to get those machines out. i've already thought of cancelling, ordering a powerbook g4 and along with souped up pc. with a loss of about 4 grand to apple. not that they care. but it sucks to invest so much in a company, time and time again, on a platform that i already have to make so many special allowances for. like not having autocad or 3d studio max and running it through a "virtual pc" when i can just go out and make a "real pc" for nothing. i wonder sometimes, if it weren't for the design and ergonomics of apple computers if the design field as a whole which just switch over to windows.

Once again, who can we blame: NVidia for not delivering, IBM for production Issue, Apple for making the G5 so special to us? The point is well taken... Apple will certainly annonce a new machine in January based on a more powerful processor and us having received our computer a month earlier will be screwed!

Just kidding.

But we all know from this experience that just because Apple ( and most other computer makers ) announce a new machine it certainly doesn't mean it's available. Let's say Apple really does annouce new dual 3.0ghrz machines at January's MacWorld - realistically they won't be available until summer. Which means we will have had a good 3/4th's of a year with our new machines before they were outdated. ( And we'll still have a pretty good machine after that.)

We maybe you will since I'm still waiting for mine!!

What is the configuration you will be using?

Could you let us know more about your first steps with this beautifule 'Baby'?

Michel

Sure! The configuration I ordered was a 2.5 w/6800, 250GB hd, 1GB ram. I have a Dell 2001FP for my display. I finally got to use it a little bit last night, but I haven't gotten to stress it at all yet. I haven't had the fan issues that some people have had, although when I ran the hardware test (which reported no issues) the fans seemed to be going full throttle the entire time. Pretty loud, but it's never done that in normal bootup. So far I've come across 2 issues: both minor. 1) Sometimes after waking up after sleep, the display won't wake up. I haven't figured out the proper was to avoid this. 2) I have a usb2 drive I was using with my PC laptop, formatted with NTFS, and when I connected it and opened it in the finder, everything locked up & I had to do a force-reboot. However browsing to it via terminal worked fine & I was able to copy my stuff off of it. I haven't tried accessing it in the finder again yet.

Other than that, this thing is sweet! Hope everyone gets their's soon! :)

i love this new machine...F*ckin fast and sweet..last year .I had to buy a pc to learn maya...and thought...well...maybe xp will be ok....but after a year of pc ****....the only place to be is in osx land... I love this block of alum..

i will buy any new item apple makes...they are trully the only exciting company around....

When did you order your machine?
I'm still waiting on a 6800 ultra standalone from Apple. I ordered my G5 on 6/22

I am getting ready to run the hardware test. So far I have not had any issues (knocking on wood). I can say that I am not totally blown away either. My dual 1.25 G4 with the geForce Ti was one hell of a computer.

I will know for sure how well this thing performs once I get someone at alias to return my calls so I can get Maya blazing away on this machine.
I have not seen any of the rippling that others have reported on my 6800. I have always had better luck with nVidia cards than ATi. Once again this proves true.

I bet the drivers provided at this time for the 6800 are not the best they can do. I was expecting a little more FPS in the iTunes visualizer. I bet they threw these together to get the card out the door and better drivers are on the way. At least I'm hoping so. Once again I will have a better feel once Maya is up and running. It hits the graphics card hard.

A tid bit for those still waiting

Let's see -

I'm downloading a 768 MB song pack (legally from my church) on my 3mbit cable connection.

Burining 4.6 gigs of data to a DVD (a major photo backup - wedding and summer vacation)

Listening to iTunes
Downloading 4 albums (qued up)

Posting to mac rumors

Smiling

Drinking a beer

and my proessor(s) have not topped 60% usage

Oh yeah, I'm running system monitor, yahoo messenger, AIM, MSN messenger, safari and IE as well...

Wow you would never know that this is a SINGLE machine doing all this at once!

Not bad for a nights work.

I was very upset at my 3+ month wait - but at this verry moment I seem to think it was worth the wait....

Iriejedi

PS - My new 23 inch monitor is FLAWLESS! Again apple does most things well - order scheduling could use some work but even I would not give my money to Oracle or People Soft! SAP either! My $$ goes to a bet that apple is using Salesforce.com!

Unbelievable - just called into work and found my dual 2.5 with 6800 had been delivered yesterday while I was out of the office. I ordered this on 28th September at 8pm from the Apple Store. No complaints so far. Am going home soon to test it out, but effectively 9 days to get here is amazing. Nice one, Apple. :D :D :D

You've got a point there.. but At some point, I don't agree. It has NO but I mean NO single use that Apple announces and delivers 4 months later. They have to play the game more open. A big portion of Apple's customers are Pro customers. They cannot wait for a machine 3 or 4 months.. If Apple had been playing nice from the beginning, and just said.. We announce now, but will deliver maybe octobre worldwide.. Or just say, we will flood US with G5's, the first 2 months, but let the rest of the world die in piece, and start shipping 2 units a week to Belgium end of september, Then I would have ordered a dual 2.0. Now, I cannot work at all!

I have friends who have waited close to 4 months to get your machine....not a week and a half. Conrtats, but Apple has become so unfair.

I've been reading more and more about this type of situation. People wouldn't mind as much waiting so long if at least Apple was consistent, but they seem to be quite random and sporadic in their shipments as of late. I guess in their defense, they're doing the best they can, but that it really a moot point and of little solace to those still waiting for their PowerMacs.

I havent had the same issues, but unless youre rendering with Maya Harware, Im pretty sure the rendering is done primarily with the CPU.
