never mind...

...I got into the site finally.

The report was still full of holes and back door exits. I'm not convinced.

Also, buying from a reseller might create a lag? Which reminds me, why do any of you buy from Apple, paying sales tax in the process (keeping in mind I'm talking about those who would avoid tax by, say, living outside of CA and some other states who tax this stuff).

I was on the phone w/ Apple online store and said I refuse to buy anything from you all because of the tax (and NO apple store in my state --why the tax -- who else does this???), I'm not a sucker. All the guy would repeat is they get you w/ the tax, at some point. What kind of dribble is that. Sales tax on a new G5 is just a bit hard to hide when getting from somebody like MacMall. I asked him, "Well then tell me where's it's hidden". He gave the same response. Robot answer, Bizarre, full a crap.

Here's hoping this pans out.

Is it just me or is there a certain irony to getting detailed order status from a rumor mill? :)

Excuse my ignorance

Can someone enlighten me to the so desired name of Zaphod for their CPU? Sounds good but other than DohpAz (i,e, Dopers) backwards - I'm lost - maybe time for a $100 google share....

Let it be known far and wide that I, Mr MacNabbit, was first to consider the name Zaphod for my Dual 2.5Ghz G5, and all those that will surely follow, are imposters with clones of my master machine! :D

Gotta love google - wish I could afford a few shares...

Zaphod Beeblebrox

Three arms, two heads, and one big ego. Zaphod Beeblebrox is cool. He's so cool you could keep a side of meat in him for a month.
He's also the president of the galaxy - or at least, he was until he stole the starship Heart of Gold, and went on a jaunt to find the fabled planet of Magrathea.

He's not quite sure why. There might have been fabulous wealth involved, but he might have been searching for the real ruler of the universe.

When faced with the horrifying prospect of being fed into the Total Perspective Vortex, he thought first of his stomach, and secondly of a trip to a discotheque.

Whateve he does, he does with style (and a smattering of bad language).

Zaphod is so hip, he can barely see over his pelvis.
He's a hip frood and he certainly knows where his towel is.

anyway.. I believe the reference is related to the two heads thing. :)

Tim, you have to pay tax if the company does business in your state. If they assemble something in your state, if they have a call center, If they have a sales office, heck.. probably a telecommuting programmer <- not sure about that one. Apple does have regional sales reps in most states, especially for their educational accounts.
Just because you don't have an Apple store, that doesn't mean that Apple doesn't do business in your state.

Also, technically you are legally obligated to pay sales taxes in your state EVEN IF THE COMPANY IS OUT OF STATE. seriously. It's the honor system, you're supposed to declare the purchase to your state. No one does this, but that's that law.

As for paying taxes for companies with out a perceptable precesence in your state... We used to be able to get dell stuff 'tax free' in Illinois but that stopped recently for no apparent reason. The bastards opened an info kiosk in OHare airport. So much for dirt cheap LCDs.

They better do it 2-day Express like I was told and not Ground the way my display was shipped.

Your display would not be shipped two-day because it was ordered after the deal was ended...

It is more likely that your computer will be shipped two-day...

Yeah, I got a confirmation too... BUT I ordered mine on July the 11th from the EDU site. You really think my ever so nice phone rep was telling me the truth ;)

Anyone else have "Power Bundles" offered @ their University through your MUG here in the states?

Here's to hoping!

how are you guys getting confirmation?

my order still has friday's date, so i'm hoping. the order just says "open" and has the 7/30 date on it. i'd love to be in the first round, they've had my money and order for some time. i ordered about three days after it was announced. it just worked out that way.

I'm not being pessimistic, so don't throw a shoe at me, but I just might cry if my G5 doesn't ship on Friday. Like seriously... I will ball like a little girl who stubbed her toe on a mutilated baby-pees-a-lot on a hot and sticky summer day.

In all honesty if it DOES ship I will probably cry when it GETS here too. Emotions are running high!

Cautious Optimism

I really really want to believe it.... so I will. But I'm confident that the 6800 card will be my official delay excuse from Apple cause that never had the July ship promis attached to it. Saddly, I'm OK with this cause I'm on a 6 state road trip for 2.5 weeks in August so either it will come when I get back or with my luck it will arrive the day AFTER I leave....

Sigh - either way - as I've said before.... If you order it, it will come. :D

Apple sucks but it sucks (unfortunately) good!

Apple to ship first wave of liquid-cooled Power Mac G5s

By Kasper Jade
Published: 06:30 PM EST

Apple Computer, Inc. is preparing to ship the first "official" batch of liquid-cooled dual processor 2.5 GHz Power Mac G5s, which should begin appearing on some customer's doorsteps as early as next week, AppleInsider has learned.

Apple began taking pre-orders for the 2.5 GHz Power Macs in early June, citing availability from the Apple Store in July. Although the company this month was reported to have provided select partners and clients with a handful of its earliest production models, shipments have yet to begin to the average consumer.

This week the Apple Store remained optimistic that the company will make good on its July promissory statement. According to well placed sources, the first customer shipments of 2.5 GHz Power Macs are currently "on track" to leave Apple's manufacturing facilities this Friday, July 30th.

Over the past week, several customers have noted pre-authorization charges from Apple on their bill statements. This is a typical precautionary measure taken by the Apple online store to detect any customer finance issues just days prior to shipping large product orders.

Unfortunately for most 2.5 GHz Power Mac adopters, the initial shipment is expected to be quite limited. A recent analysis of pending Power Mac G5 orders indicates that only those customers who placed orders during the first week or so of availability are likely to see their orders fulfilled by the first week of August. In fact, it appears that IBM's G5 manufacturing problems will continue to plague the Power Mac family well into September. New orders for 2.5 GHz Power Macs carry a waiting period of at least 4 to 6 weeks, meanwhile customers have also reported their share of delays associated with fresh orders for the slower 2.0 GHz Power Mac models.

On a more positive note, information suggests that Apple's July 30th 2.5 GHz Power Mac shipments may include a handful of NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL graphics cards. Apple had previously stated that the graphics card--a requirement for Apple's new 30-inch HD Cinema display--would not ship until late August.

Although higher-ups at the Apple online store confirmed plans to begin shipping the new Power Macs later this week, they were cautious not to rule out any last minute delays. In the event that plans change, sources say that customers with July delivery estimates will receive an e-mail from the Apple Store, updating their order status to an reflect an early August delivery.

My order date was 6/18, and it still showing a 7/30 ship.

Here's hoping....(although my 23" doesn't come until mid-August. But it will still be nice to have it at the ready.)

Honestly, I care less about the ship date and more about quality. Looking historically, even the current issues with the 4G iPod, I hope Apple has taken the time to get this right. Dropping 6 grand on a wind tunnel Mac or one with all the issues that the D1.8 have faced will really piss me off. Waiting a week or two or three is trivial vs. years of disappointment.

I wonder how all this bodes for us that placed orders with resellers. I wonder if this initial crop will just go out to apple store orders, or if some of the rest of us have a chance at getting a machine too.

I placed my order around 1:30 EST on 6/9 with ClubMac. I hope I've got a shot! If not, I'll happily wait the next few weeks to get mine. It was worth saving hundreds of dollars.

Ordered mine on the 12/6 - still says 2nd Aug in UK... Hope so :)

23 inch hope

Added 23 inch about two weeks ago.... scheduled for 8/11 - FED EX and Apple say it arrives today - keep the faith that your will also arrive EARLY!

That's a good point, and you are probably right, but the Apple Store Online's rep that I spoke to just a few days ago said, "Everything on your order is shipping 2-day Express." I didn't take that to mean "everything except..."

I'm really confused now. When I got up this morning, I was confident the D2.5s were going to ship today or tomorrow. Why? Because Apple had overdrawn the AVAILABLE (not ACTUAL) Balance on my account by putting through another pre-authorization for BOTH the D2.5 and the 20" Cinema Display. I can't afford two of both! I wish. When I called Apple though, they were more than willing to remove ALL of the pre-auths for non-shipped items. So they removed all but one pre-auth for the display which shipped out on Monday. AAAAARRRGH! Are the D2.5s shipping or not!!

Things are getting exciting!

Well, I placed my order with Mac Connection early to mid-July so I have no illusions of getting mine next week. I believe a batch will ship and the first wave will be absorbed by those that ordered in June. Then there will be waiting for the next batch, probably mid August or September.

Nevertheless, I will enjoy reading all the news of how people like it, benchmarks, seeing one in the Apple store, reviews and so on.

Let the first wave roll!

So does anyone think there is reason for me to hope my order will ship?

I ordered stock config 2.5'er on July 11th. I have and continue to have the July 30th ship date. Called Apple and reconfirmed shipping out on the 30th, yesterday.

Is there any hope?

Edit: this was an EDU order if that matters.
