Glassbathroom and everyone else, thx for the posts.

At 14 years old I had to choose what I should study until i'm 18. At that time I chose architecture and graduated (first of my class ;)). But during those years, I realized I didn't want to do this my entire life, so chose not to study architecture at uni or college. The designing and drawing was great, but those material studies, strenght calculations, etc were really boring to me, so I chose to go to multimedia college, and now i'm a webdesigner/developer and a (windows) programmer.

So sorry, can't answer your questions :)

Ah, so You don't have the AutoCad problem any more. Well done. You probably can make a bit more money in web design and programming! Good luck.

well, now I am reporting problems...I have started to have hangs with the 2.5 and the 6800....and a high temp on cpu a of 185f...this is way too high and the hangs are unacceptable...so I have to call apple tomorrow and see what the deal is.......I am counting to 10 as I type this....
Roz, check the System Log file -- it's amazingly informative. Note the time when you have one of these hangs and then sift through the lines until you find some problems reported at those times.

My current G5 had something like FOUR Thermal Runaways last night. Pity, because I wanted it to stay on all night to heat the bedroom :p

After receiving my G5 with 6800 yesterday, my display came today. Wow, quite a change from my 15" PB. I've been installing apps so really haven't had much of a chance to take it through the paces yets. Apps load much quicker. It looks like several others have just received theirs as well. Looks like a good week for many on this thread.
Howdy, I used to be from Tacoma! Glad to hear somebody's got a 30" out there.

P.S. I always thought 'Puyallup' only had two L's...

OMG Klaus!! - I can't believe you are only just getting yours!! - that's insane!! - glad you finally have it though!

I have had mine a month already now, and the 3 month wait was horrendous, let alone a month longer - is there anybody else from the original first week of ordering still waiting?

I'm not from the original first week... but feels like it..
Been waiting since 12th of July... (94 days and counting)

Just got the answer from my reseller...: CTO orders will be delivered this year... No date... Just "this year"
He has been in direct contact with Apple in Ireland, and they are so pressed, that they can't even get the time to pick up their phones...

So now I've started to wonder... when do they throw out a bigger model... Might be one week after I recieve my DP2,5... Then I will put the factory on fire... (Joke) :D

Waiting for:
Dual 2,5 G5 - (Bluetooth, Airport Extreme, minus modem)
2,5 GB RAM (Kingston 3rd-party NOT VALUE-RAM)
74 GB Western Digital 10.000 RPM Raptor HD SATA

Supplement to:
17" 1.33 Ghz Powerbook

I would drive 350 miles for my 2.5... I did!

Hi guys, this is also my first post here...
Well actually I used to post a while back but it's so long that I had create a new identity, so I'm "Jimacin" (don't even remeber my old name here). I have been following this thread for a while and reading all these "waiting months" stories made me fell as if I would not get a Dual 2.5 at all. I did not want to pre-order... that's just me. So here's my story.

After months of going back and forth on the decision to buy a G5, I finally decided that I would do it before my birthday. So I called around and no one had any. I came back to forum and found that everyone was still waiting for their 2.5's. This was a very hard machine to track down. But I did it. I called every Apple in Arizona, Nevada then California. To my surprise I located one in the San Francisco Bay Area. I made them make absolutely sure that it was a 2.5. They assured me it was. This place was like 350 miles away from my home so I asked if they could ship it... "nope" they don't ship. I could take my car because it is not in the best of traveling conditions. So I let it sit for a day. Called them the next day, to make sure again they still had it, and that it WAS a 2.5. I asked.. more like begged if they could ship it.. sorry! So I let it sit again. But my birthday was the next day. So right before they closed that night I called and asked if they could hold it for me. This they said yes to. So I located a car rental agency that closed at 11pm. Drove my car and left it at the car rental and drove to San Francisco from LA. No one knew I left.. I didn't tell anyone.

So I arrived there at 4:30am and slept in the car until they opened. At 10am I walked in and said "hi there, you guys are hold a Powermac G5 2.5Ghz for me." "Oh, you're the guy the was drive here from LA" the guy said." Yup... that was me. I asked some more RAM and an upgraded Video card.. but they were out of RAM and they didn't do the video card thing there... That was fine wtih me. I could do that stuff later since this was maybe the last 2.5 in stock in any Apple store (at least in California). While I was there I decided to get a monitor as well, so I picked up a 20." Mission completed. As I walked out eveyone in the store was saying stuff like "now that's dedication." The best part was hearing them wish me a happy birthday!

I drive back was awsome. It was perfect. I made it back by 6pm, in time for a nice birthday celebration (cake and all). Little did they know what was sitting in my car. They actually still don't know. I wanted to set it up before I showed anyone. You see, my family would not understand. Well, some members of my family. BUT I know you guys would! That is why I'm writing this here now on my newly connected 2.5. Don't get me wrong guys. I am not bragging. I fell very bad that people have been waiting so long. But I'm sure anyone here would have done the same. I know this was a long post but thanks to anyone who reads this and understands my 20 year Apple lunacy. I really hope everyone gets theirs soon.

P.S. Everyone still thinks I went to work on my birthday. If only they knew.

Happy Birthday and Welcome Back!

Faced with the same situation, I would have done the same thing. It's amazing how much more you appreciate something when you have worked harder for it -- with Macs and with all other things in life.

I've been enjoying my Dual 2.5 for a little over a month now. I'm so glad I opted to have Apple get it to me and send me the 6800 later. Well later is finally now as I received my tracking number for the 6800 this morning!

I'll be able to do a real compare and contrast versus the stock 9600xt and then either eBay it or keep it as a spare.

Everything arrived...

OK, got the FedEx notice and I should have my display (30") in about 3 hrs. I'll post pics as soon as I fire it up. Can't wait to see what this thing will look like on my desk!

Another DOA problem !

Hi all,

Interesting thread !

Another DOA here...

Received my 2.5Ghz G5 tower yesterday (Oct 13th) here in the UK, built to order with 1Gb RAM, Airport and Nvidia 6800 Ultra graphics. I'm running it into an LG 1920P TFT screen via DVI cable.

Machine boots up as far as the initial screen with grey Apple logo, but the spinning widget beneath never appears, so the machine just sits there, not loading the OS, and the fans gradually ramp up till I turn it off.

Same behaviour on attempting to boot from the install CD. The Apple Hardware Test CD does boot though and all tests pass.

Spent an afternoon fault-finding on the telephone with Apple Tech Support who were very helpful, but ultimately, they are going to replace my machine as DOA. Reseated RAM, checked cables, zapped PRAM, reset PMU, single user mode (got only as far as 'DART enabled') etc all to no avail.

Estimated replacement was within 5-7 days, seems optimistic but we shall see....

Hi, Dave, sorry to hear about your machine. I bet they some separate machines for DOA replacements, so these don't have to wait for normal orders. So you'll have working machine rather quickly I think.

Hang in there, it's worth the wait

It is optimistic. I reported my machine DOA and arranged for replacement on 4 October (had to wait for Apple Store reps on a Monday morning) and I am STILL waiting for my replacement. I am following its paces on the slow boat to Holland -- funny thing is Apple hasn't officially notified me that it's shipping. I think this is a new strategy so they wait until it's readdy to roll from Holland before getting our hopes up. :p

I too have the LG1920 monitor, but doubt that has anything to do with it. At least I have been able to get mine past the loading screen.

Hoping our replacements are rock-solid!

Grebo

Thanks Guys !

I guess it will be worth the wait. I mean the machine looks visually stunning, but so frustrating for it to be DOA, especially when I took a day off work to receive it.

Mine didn't go via Holland, it went from Cork to Northampton, down to Exeter overnight then out to me, took two days in all to reach me once it had shipped.

It's the hassle of dealing with collection and redelivery that is going to be the biggest pain. Ah well.....

It started up far enough for the fans to settle, and I'm very impressed with the quietness, as it was far quieter than my old Sawtooth G4. Mind you when the OS is busy things may be different I suppose.

I also noticed on the Nvidia 6800 card that there appears to be a small piece of paper/card positioned between the heatsink mount and one of the chips, sort of like an insulating shim - don't know whether that seeming afterthought is confidence inspiring or not !

Cheers !

Dave

Did you not opt for the APP?

Hi, I'm curious if you opted for the Apple Protection Plan or not -- because it seems that's the ONLY reason it goes to Holland for is to 'meet' that package so they can be shipped together.

Totally pointless, as they are shipped as separate packages anyway -- and you really don't need the APP straight away (I haven't opened mine because I'm waiting for the monitor to arrive so I can activate them all on the same contract.

It's infuriating because we've been waiting SO long and it does this little rendezvous that adds five days to the shipping process... grrrrrr!

Unless I'm mistaken, this is a small sheet of heat transfer tape, used in lieu of heat transfer paste. Very common, although most CPU installations still use the paste over the tape.

Enjoy your new computer!

6800 shipped

Just got word from Apple that my 6800 shipped. Of course FedEx knows nothign of it but I've gone though this before when my G5 actually shipped a month ago. For those of you who are curious I've had no more thermal runaways after my processor chunk was replaced. :)

YIPPEE!!!!

WOO-HOO! Order on Sept. 9, it was supposed to ship On or Before October 25th, then On or Before November 15th, and wouldn't you know it shipped yesterday! Now I just have to keep my fingers crossed that it isn't DOA, doesn't make strange noises or constantly thermally overrun, or spring a leak... Only 29 hours left!!!

Wooo Hooo! 6800 Question

Hey WStokes

Was this a regular order for one - or part of the 9600 free and 6800 later deal for the 2.5 debocle?

What was your estimated ship date?

Just curious - I'm slated for 10/15 and optimistic but I am also in the I really don't care mode....the 9600 has been great so far... but that makes me wonder what am I missing....

THanks in advance.

Protein Folding

I realize this is not directly related to G5 shipments...but I needed to ask people who have dual processor computers...how do I go about setting up BOTH my processors to fold proteins? I tried to follow the instructions on the website...but it didn't really work.

Thanks

Hi jimacin, welcome to MacRumors and Happy B-Day. I can certainly understand what you did to get your G5. Personally I wouldn't go to that length. Hope that you will enjoy. I have also been with Apple for over 20 years. Let us know how the setup goes. Your family and friends will certainly be amazed.

My G5 was shipped with a 9600 when they couldn't get it here on time with the 6800. Ordered back in July (around the 7th I believe). Apple claims it shipped on the 13th, and I have overnight shipping, but fedex still knows nothing of this package

Re: Apple Protection Plan

Hi grebo,

No I skipped on the APP, that diversion to Holland you described sounds insane - just to meet up with a guarantee package - what a crazy world we live in !

Well TNT are picking up my dead G5 tomorrow - couldn't be more helpful and accomodating, so that will be out of my sight anyway.

Just waiting on the word from Apple now about the replacement. I have to say my confidence has been dented badly. I don't want to stump up £199 for the APP, but I'm beginning to wonder....

Cheers :)

Hey, you're right. Puyallup does only have two L's. I could blame it on sticky keys, but it's probably just lousy typing. Thanks for the correction.

The 30" is great. I was not quite ready for how BIG it is, especially since I was working on a 15" PB. It's amazing how much screen real estate I have now. Great for Photoshop and video editing.
