Anyone thought about why they would warehouse the 2.5 G5s they have manufactured to all ship at once?

Here's 3 ideas:

1. There is a goody in the box they want everyone to find out about at the same time, or at least the first group.

2. There is something about it that they expect will result in a lot more orders being placed once the 2.5DP is out there, and they already have a serious backorder problem.

3. They expect a lot of flack from people complaining about shipping delays and this will hold it off as long as possible as right now they can say noone has rec'd it.

I agree with Rocketfella. I think that there is something special or different about these machines that we haven"t been told about and they want to have enough on hand for a surge in demand. After all have we all forgotten that this is the Mac's 20th anniversary? Maybe Steve's promise of 3ghz? Probably not. But maybe a brushed aluminum keyboard and mouse, wireless of coarse and TWO BUTTONS AND A SCROLL WHEEL!

Yep. 8/20 & ordered 6/14

To Our Valued Apple Customer:

Thank you for ordering the new Dual 2.5GHz Power Mac G5!

The demand for this item has been incredible. We are shipping them as quickly
as possible, but cannot meet the ship date we previously estimated for you. We
now expect to ship your Power Mac on or before August 20th.

Please rest assured that we fulfill all orders in the order they are received.
If we do not hear from you prior to shipment, we will assume the revised date
is acceptable, and will ship your order. We will notify you if there are any
changes to the revised ship date.

To check the status of your order, visit <http://www.apple.com/orderstatus>.
When your Power Mac ships, you will receive a Shipment Notification via email
explaining how you may track the package.

We appreciate your patience and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this
delay has caused you. Thank you for your interest in Apple products!

Sincerely,
The Apple Store Team

I totally trust this sales rep because i bought 2 studio displays from him and he was right on the ball about shipping ,etc.

I am working in SF and was at a studio that has taken delivery on a new G5 2.5GHZ at least a week ago.. Not sure about the details, was in a rush to another studio and forgot to ask...but it is in fact true..

G

um, no. Apparently it's not.

I don't get it. Do people who post messages like this really think they're true or are they just winding us up? Seems rather cruel.

Must be, and oh yah, there will bo Powerbook G5s next Tuesday too! :D

They better come up with a really good excuse. If it's true that every single G5 2.5 GHz order is delayed until 8/20, then they've once again miserably missed a promised date. But more importantly, this statement from the email they sent us is an outright lie...

Shipping as quickly as possible? They haven't shipped anything. The way this is worded implies that they are shipping now but don't have the quantity necessary to fill all the orders. This sounds like the type of notification someone would receive if they were one of the next customers in line when the supplier ran out of the item.

My Estimated Ship Date has never changed from 7/30 to anything else. I did, however, receive the 8/20 email. It doesn't seem to matter how many times I refresh the page, logout and back in, check from home or work, or even reboot, I have never seen 8/20 on my order. I'm going to wait until Saturday morning when they've officially missed the 7/30 ship date before I start doing anything about it, and I need to think about what that is going to be.

I wouldn't be surprised if some 2.5 G5s do go out tomorrow. And others get shipped out a few a day through 08/20. I bet the revised shipping date is Apple's worst-case scenario, as had been suggested already several pages back, and that we'll be seeing "I Got Mine Too" posts over the next several weeks.

I don't know if you guys are getting this, but I logged in and out of my order status page 5 times and it alternated from 7/30 to 8/20 each time! I have no idea what's going on. I need to lie down... I feel dizzy.

Yup back to 7/30 again .... Apple's order fullfillment is legedary but this is beyond your wildest dreams. Got an email this morning stating that my funds were not enough and that I should respond before they cancel my order... The email was addressed to another guy (and different ordernumber all together), after 1.5 Hr customer service they told me the system had a glitch and that my funds are okay (for now). 5 minutes later I was on the 8/20 schedule ... Is this a joke or really a 7.5 billion/yr company?

I'd bet the accessory pack is nothing special. It would be totally out of character, in my opinion, for Apple to hand us any special, free gift. They've missed so many expected dates this year that they surely would not be willing to delay beyond yet another promised ship date to include a special gift. That would be moronic.

Even though we've all seen reports that these 2.5s could be shipping with 10.3.4, I'm fairly convinced now that 10.3.5 is required, and it is the hold-up. That blasted 30" display that is responsible for dropping the only reasonably priced monitor, the 17", out of the display line-up, is why they can't get 10.3.5 done. The latest developer seed notes indicated that Core Graphics and Video Drivers were two of the primary areas on which to concentrate testing efforts. There are two other possible factors... If the AI report is true, some of the units that were going to ship tomorrow will have the new 6800 card that supports the 30" display meaning those 2.5s would have to have 10.3.5, and the other possibility is that there really is something in 10.3.5 that is required for the liquid cooling units.

Apple didn't release the current developer seed of 10.3.5 until 2 or 3 days ago. So if 10.3.5 is the problem, they've known for awhile now that they could not complete testing, load 10.3.5 on all of the 2.5 units, and get them out the door by 7/30. I'm sure they didn't want to deal with the public ruckus caused by announcing that they couldn't meet the July ship date, but now they look even worse because not only are they going to miss it, but they've failed to be upfront about it with their customers in a reasonable timeframe.

screwed the 2.5, hello 2.0 rev B

You know what, being bumped a month might have been the best thing for me. I canceled my 2.5 order drove the 5 minutes to my local Apple store picked up a revisionB 2.0 rig, btw these things are way heavier than I would have thought {had to carry it 4 flights}. At any rate, I popped in the 1 gig of crucial ram I had, airport card; booted up and am posting in under 20 minutes. I am importing video and burning a DVD as we speak... errr i type. Apple store had mucho RevB's in stock. It's so quiet, I can't even tell it's on. Nothing like some avoidance of delayed gratification to make a man smile :).

That's been happening to me as well...

Some G5s may go out tomorrow, let's face it, Apple was going to have to send delay emails to some of the 7/30 people who were later to order. Not all of the 7/30 people were going to have their G5 ship on 7/30, only those who ordered within the first week. I have not yet received a delay email, though my date did change to 8/20 and has been changing back and forth.

7/30 is still "on or before 8/20"

Do I believe that some G5s may go out tomorrow? Yes...
Is this likely? No...

Always the optimist... :)

It is an unfortunate combination of chip, hardware, and software. The biggest of which we all know is chip production. It is an Apple time honored tradition to 'announce early and ship late'. It just would not be Apple without it. They will get here eventually. Until then, we wait.

For the industry to keep its usual pace of doubling the amount of transistors it puts on a chip every 18 months to 24 months, it had to do a lot of innovating with chip design as well as new materials and manufacturing processes. However, when manufacturers resort to all sorts of tricks to boost chip performance while preventing them from literally burning up, those modifications give rise to design and production problems. "We're in a seminal shift in the industry," says Bernard S. Meyerson, IBM's chief technology officer. "Conventional wisdom doesn't necessarily apply anymore. You have to rely on invention."

IBM is a chip-technology pioneer, so its struggles with Apple's processor are doubly embarrassing. It took IBM more than six months to fix glitches at its East Fishkill (N.Y.) plant that kept yields -- the number of usable chips on a 12-inch wafer -- unacceptably low. Big Blue seems to have ironed out the glitches: Output doubled last quarter and is expected to double again this quarter, and Apple says it will stick with IBM.

"The whole industry has struggled with this transition. But because of our aggressive technology and designs, we tend to hit the bleeding-edge problems before our competition," says John E. Kelly III, senior vice-president in IBM's Systems & Technology Group.

I'm certainly still optimistic. Since tomorrow is the 30th, then we will know for sure. Then the wait to hear about members receiving their 2.5.

The date on my order status still says August 20, but I assume that the revised date in the email (August 2) supercedes.

I placed my order on 6/14.

There is still hope!

I wouldn't be surprised either, but if it is just a worst case scenario, why is the Apple Store telling callers that NO G5 2.5s will ship until on or near 8/20? Are they just trying to get through all the calls they're getting with the quickest response possible?

I got that same exact email swivelchair, however, when I checked my order status it had gone back to "on or before 7/30/04"

My system is almost completely stock except for an increase in RAM from 512 to 1 gig and the 9800XT. I ordered my dualie on 6/19.

I've studied my order status details, and for the likes of me, I can't see any difference from the original order. Maybe the database hasn't been updated (hence it still shows the 8/20 ship date?)?

My order went from 8/2 back to 7/30 this eve. I have loged out re-checked, and refreshed many times each stays at 7/30.
Called Apple, rep says all they know is what they can see on the screen in front of them and mine says 7/30. He had not herd that ALL 2.5 were delayed. He has had two people call to check there orders and they both showed up as 7/30. When I told him about this thead and the delays etc. all he said was "thats why I love reading the Rumor-sites, Its fun to look back at how wrong they are on this or that".

True.

Just got off the phone with Apple

I too received a follow-up email from Apple, so I called them. I'm pasting what I just posted over at AI to save some time:

Ok, latest update. Just got off the phone with Apple, and here's what I've learned.

The guy admittedly didn't have ALL the answers we'd like but I did learn a thing or two.

Evidently too many people were sent delay emails, which is why people like me and many of you are receiving follow-ups like the one I posted above. Not all of the follow up emails have been sent, which means that just b/c you haven't yet received an email yet saying you're in luck and your system is going to ship on Aug. 2nd, you STILL MIGHT.

He also told me to IGNORE ANY STATUS MESSAGES ON THE APPLE SITE, as they aren't updated correctly yet and will just confuse you. Go by the emails they send out.

Other than that, I have no idea what's going on, but as always will keep you all posted when I learn more.

Got the frckn email from Apple .... I especially enjoy the following:

" Please rest assured that we fulfill all orders in the order they are received.
If we do not hear from you prior to shipment, we will assume the revised date
is acceptable, and will ship your order. We will notify you if there are any
changes to the revised ship date."

How can I tell them I really find the revised date NOT acceptible .... Got them on the phone for 1.5 Hrs! .... mmm, maybe I should send an email to Do_not_reply@apple.com .... Since that is the only email address I have
