An historical perspective (and word of advice)
I've been buying Macs (exclusively) since my first SE way back in 1986, and I have never waited less than a month to receive my order. I have also never once regretted my decision, even when the wait was pure torture.
Believe me, for good or bad, this is nothing new. Apple has a very dedicated user base (with good reason), and when a delectable machine like the G5 2.5 is announced, it's pretty much a given that we are going to create an instantaneous demand that will completely overwhelm Apple's attempts to satisfy us. Take a deep breath, strike a Zen pose, and chant to yourself, "It is nature's way."
I received an email today from Apple saying that my overprotective bank had declined to approve the transaction, since spending $3100 on a single purchase was "contrary to my normal monthly spending habits" (Duh!). A quick call to the bank and then to Apple cleared things up and hopefully sent the process grinding forward again. My assumption was that they were readying my shipment prior to getting sassed by the bank. Who knows what sort of a setback that was.
So, a word of advice to those of us still waiting -- If 3k + purchases are outside your 'monthly norm,' you might want to be proactive in letting your bank know that yes, you did intend to do this, and yes, you do expect them to approve the transaction. At the very least, make sure they have your cell phone number in their records so that they can call and ask if there is any doubt.
Good luck and Godspeed to those still waiting. Try to keep calm and not malign Apple too much -- when the machine arrives, your pain will have been worth it. Or, as my wife says, "Settle down, Beavis."
