The purpose of the TN and other US facilities is to ship the orders from within the US, thus avoiding international shipping fees (where possible.) It's much cheaper for them to ship 10 boxes on a palette, then redirect from within the destination country, than it is to ship directly from the factory to the customer. BTO laptops always ship from Asia, and it's possible they add some BTO parts in certain US or European facilities. But primariily, they are assembled and tested in Asian production facilities.

Well, according to the chap i spoke to at Apple UK ( based in cork ), ALL G5's are built in CORK ( Ireland ). He suggested that BTO are put together elsewhere but essentially the G5 is built in Ireland. I asked if this was for all G5's worldwide and he said yes. May be it is just for all the European G5's but i don't see why they would lie. Im sure all the parts for it are manufactured elsewhere, Asia etc.. but it looks like they are all assembled in Cork.

Anyway, that what i was they told me

Have also seen a few jobs posted and heard news about this before elsewhere.

Are the G5's which are in China at the moment BTO's ? if not then Apple must have told me porkies !

I placed an order for a G5 2.5 + Airport card + 23" display on 17th July and have a estimated shipping date or on or before 30th August. It has not changed once and so i hope it will come before the end of August. fingers crossed !! :)

My order is for inside Europe so i hope the journey from Cork is not too far ! Maybe by adding an Airport card mine will be born in China ?

so from what i see in this forum, no one has a 2.5 yet ? right ? ah well, best of luck everyone. I hope they start to arrive soon.

I presume Apple are doing all they can, although some information from them about what is shipping, where and when would be nice. I can't complain ( yet ) my service from Apple so far had been great, i knew there would be a wait anyway so until my shipping date has passed i have no reasons to complain.

( anyway, just my thoughts and what i have been told so don't bite my head off ! )
 
I followed up with my buddy whose a pilot for Fed-Ex. He called me back from Denver, CO. his first stop tonight. I told him to grab any G5 boxes if he sees any. After telling him it didn't seem anyone got tracking updates from Memphis, but someone did from Anchorage, otherwise no info. He had no way of looking into it for facts but said that routing is very fluid, if a plane isn't going to make the last sort in memphis it could definitely go to a different hub then any packages that could get to there destinations from there would go on, and others would probably go to Memphis. Also its possibly that the package we have tracking info on is next day or 2 day air and others are ground. Lastly, a plane in Anchorage at 2:30 could go on to its PM flights without going to memphis first, then it will probably be in Memphis sometime tonight for the morning sort.

So IF Apple has a bunch of computers on that plane being shipped to them before there customers, they should have them tomorrow. Maybe they will turn them around and ship them to customers the same day? I still show an est. ship date of 8/4.

I am still hopeful my computer is on that plane.

If its not I'm going to give up on Apple, dust off my commodore 64 with its 11" green text display and type "Apple stinks, G5's stink" ten thousand times. Then I'll back it up on a 5 1/2" floppy, put it in its protective envelope sleeve and go shopping for some plaid pants to look pretty when I arrive at the insane asylum.

Well, then why the fek havent we had them in the UK then - jaysus, I'll go and pick one up from Cork and have a weekend on the Guinness to boot!

I can't see how they can be built in Cork and not arrived here yet - thats insane!!??!? 8]
 
Man, I want my G5 even more than ever now...

I'm writing a simple fps engine that has visual effects similar to doom 3 (think marathon with shaders and realtime lighting), and I've been holding off on a lot of the vertex and fragment shader stuff until my new machine arrives that actually supports them. I've been having to sneak into work to use their newer video boards to test stuff. I'm having one of those periods of "code inspiration" and my computer isn't here yet!! My development cycle is being held up by fedex!!

I had the pleasure of playing doom 3 for about 4 hours at a friends house today (pc version came out today), and ladies and gentlemen no emoticon can express my reaction to its fullest extent. I need my G5, and the mac version of doom 3, and a large space of empty time and I can die a happy man (after said period of empty time, of course).
 
Hey guys, don't you know, in order to save a few bucks, Apple decided not to fly the G5s to Europe and America. They're being transported on the good old Silk Road. They should reach Western Europe right in time for Christmas :D
 
OK, Mine is in Grand Rapids, MI...about 2-3 hours south of me. Think it will be in today? Does FedEx do like an afternoon shipment? What I figure is, if they only send trucks out for delivery in the morning, I'll have to wait until tomorrow. If they send out an afternoon shipment... I could get it today!!! What do you think?

Oh---by the way, I'll have photos up the second it's in!

I'd call Fedex and see if you can contact someone at Rapid to see if they will be sending it today,

or else, go pick it up yourself ;);)

Looks like hotwire and J Berg should be the proud owners of some new G5s today. Can't wait to hear your reactions.

While I'm going crazy waiting for mine, at least I have some hope that they're starting to arrive!

btw, not sounding pushy, but what time is it at your place? Cause over here it's late afternoon, and I'd like to know how long i'll have to stay up for a review and pictures ;);)

How sad am I? I'm sitting here clicking "Refresh" on a regular basis, so that i can see if someone i have never met, will be getting a computer that i haven't ordered and can't afford anyway.

Right now, it's 9:56 AM. Traverse City is about a 45-60 minute drive. However, with all the FedEx stops, I doubt it will be here before 2:00 or so. Though I don't have much of an idea, because I usually use UPS.

I signed up for a .mac trial and I'm preparing the page where the review and photos will go. Now all I need is the G5 so I can review it and post photos!

I ordered a "2.5DPG5/1GB/250/SD/R9600XT/PCI-X/BT-USA" CTO from the Apple Store. I'm almost embarrassed to say I only ordered it on July 10 (3:16 PM EDT) (with a July 30, Aug 20, Aug 9 on-or-before shipping date). I got my shipping confirmation this morning at 9:01 (EDT).
 
thx essefgy, looks like the first Bluetooth equipped machine has shipped, so there's no delay over there, as was mentioned earlier.

let the shipping confirmations come!
 
sweet - looks like another shipment is on its way. i wonder how big this one will be!

[crosses fingers and hopes that some will be heading to ClubMac...]
