It is the liquid cooling system. Did you check for noise reduction or anything like that? I am curious if it is quieter now?

It was the 1.8 and 2.0 G5 model that also had the radiator look as the G5. It was an Apple Store employee told me that they don't yet have the 2.5.

Since I was at the convention Exhibit floor which was noisy. I held my ear next to the G5 and I didn't really notice any noise. The two fans in front of the radiator were running at a slow speed. So according to the Apple Specialist, that's what will make it quieter.

Had a call from Apple finance today

When I'd ordered my CTO 2.5DP my cc was due to expire, since the order the card has been renewed. Apple finance wanted a new card expiry date today, maybe they are looking at debiting my card :). Or I'm being wildly optimistic :(

I would say that is good news. If they are ready to credit your card it give cause for a smile. The overwhelming majority of companies including Apple don't dot hat until they are ready to make your custom order. That is only fair, if they are going to do a custom then they should know that they will be paid. Shipping should be soon to follow.

I just spoke to my CDW rep and he still says they're scheduled to arrive today. I then called a couple more people there to see if I could get some more info.

One guy told me that there's a reasonable chance they came today. Apple did not change the shipping date in their system and they always do when they are shipping things later. He also noted that their shipping & receiving department is really backed up and doesn't think they'll be in stock until Monday or Tuesday.

So, it's definitely not concrete but was good news to me.

Great! Keep us updated. Monday or Tuesday would still be terrific.

TWO WEEKS UNTIL 7/30! :D

In my experience, Apple has always shipped their BTOs in the late afternoon or early evening. Sometimes overnight.

Could we see some BTOs ship tonight?????? :)

Like mine? :D

A little off-topic but,

Why doesn't Apple sell BTOs with Office 2004 installed bundle? Or an Adobe Bundle installed (CS suite)? An office suite bundle with Office and/or Quickbooks and fax prog. A designer packages with Suitcase, Adobe suite or Quark. A game package with Top 5 games...

Other than the obvious labor cost (gee, how hard is a bundle image from Microsoft Mac division or Adobe's Mac division?), I've set up numerous new G4's and G5's for clients that compared the Dell and HP bundles that come with Office... So why not something like this from Apple?

Appleworks, you say?

(Ok, OEM versions would be more confusing to the Standard, Premium, Educational packages already...). Still, there is the trial version of Office on some Macs and trial versions of Filemaker.

opinions?

No financial incentive for either Apple or the software vendors is my guess. It is my guess that those that need the MS Office or Adobe products will pay the piper.

So if I were to order today what who would get the 2x2.5 (no mods) to me fastest Apple or a retailer? ....and which retailer?

Solo cards are delayed-NOT BTO cards

Solo Cards are delayed - cards in machine are NOT - well at least according to my order - 7/30 still even with NEW card - I ordered about 9:10am the day they were anounced and the card the same thing minutes after it was added to the store - my order date never changed - now this could be a fluke but the guy on the phone said it should not change the date... but what do they truly know?

Your delay is just your spot in the que... my new 23inch montior that is NOW SHIPPING (added that to order the day it was announced they WERE shippin)is scheduled for Aug 11th - so I'd go back and switch the card - after all the other card is all but useless - once you upgrade and the 6800 is more then a simple upgrade... it is a generation leaper.

I can't wait - but of course until it ships on the 30th of July - I'll not wager any bets for weather or not the card delays my 2.5

:)

I finally ordered my 2.5 G5 last night and while configuring it i threw on the ultra 6800 card at the last minute. I didn't realize the card wasnt coming out until late august. Since the graphics card isn't all that important to me for the time being I called up the Apple Store and changed my order to the 9800.

My order status now shows the change in graphics card, but i am still listed at a shipping date of 8/27 or earlier.

Im wondering if this means that since i ordered so late I cant really do anything about getting the computer earlier so does it really matter that i changed to an already available graphics card? Hopefully that was all understandable.

Apple replied to my email saying call them, so I did and a VERY nice lady explained how this goes. This rumor is false, she said it's very clear in the system that the G5's won't be shipping until the very last DAY of July to customers. The Apple Stores (and resellers) however will receive them possibly earlier. My estimated order ship date is 8/25/04, and it's only like that because their automated system shows the G5's as "out of stock." As soon as they're available and shipping, my ship date will be considerably sooner, because there automated system will show that they're in stock.

pighuddle,

If you're willing to go with a stock machine (which is what I am doing), you should probably call some local Apple Retail Stores. I'm going to be vacationing in New Hampshire next month and on a whim I called the Salem, NH store a few weeks ago and put my name on the "list" for one of the new machines. To my surprise, I was only the 3rd person to do so and thus I have a good chance of getting one from the first shipment. I called the store earlier this week and they told me they were expecting their first shipment next week (which jives with some of the info above).

May be worth a shot if there are any Apple stores in your area. If not, I have always had good luck with MacConnection.

regards,

JT

Wha-at?! I called the Apple Store here in Indianapolis and asked if I could reserve one and the guy just said, "No, but keep calling back to check when we get them in stock," or something to that effect. Pfaw... at least I know when to call back :)

Thankyou iriejedi

I called the apple store again, thinking i would just go ahead and change the gfx card back to the 6800 but after speaking to two different individuals saying completely oposite things, I determined that the difference is: with the 9800xt there is a posibility of it shipping as early as 11 days before my estimated shipping date "8/27/04". With the 6800 the earliest it could be shipped would be late august.

So i guess im still confused as to what to do, but not quite as confused.

I am going to be supremely disappointed if resellers and apple stores get the 2.5s before online customers do. What the hell would that be? Apple screwing over the customers who ordered first and keep the company going?

Anybody have any experience with the shipping pecking order?

No kidding. I'm going to be totally pissed off if they arrive at the Apple retail stores first. I live 4 miles from the Alpharetta, GA store. I could have just bought one there instead. Heads are gonna roll!

The wait is just killing me. There are so many things I'm waiting to finish and other projects I'm waiting to start because my G3 B&W just can't keep up anymore with iMovie and Logic Pro, or really any of my graphics apps.

I agree Soire.

What is the logic of sending them to the stores first esp. if they are constrained and you have customers who have, in effect, already bought them?

This is irritating because, if true, with ground shipping it could be two weeks+ to get our orders after they are available to the public at stores and retailers.

If it ends up 14 or more days difference I'll buy from retailers in the future.

7/31 with 6800

I ordered a custom 2.5ghz to replace a 2.0 that was DOA, through the tech support people, not the Apple Store. Originally, I ordered it with the 9800XT, and was told it would be about a two week turn around, and it would ship when they received the return. Well, that was almost a month ago. A few days later they announced the 6800 for only $135 more than what I had ordered. It took a few phone calls to get them to agree to change the order once it was "in process", but I finally got them to check on the expected date of shipping and they said 7/31. I figured if I had to wait that long anyway, I'd wait for the 6800, so I went ahead and made the change today. They hadn't started working on it yet of course, but even with the 6800 they still say 7/31 shipping date. I don't know if this is a special circumstance or not. They certainly don't seem to be rushing it through, and I have gotten different info from the reps in the past, but maybe....

JT.

Per your advice I did just that, but the Apple store in SF does not have a waiting. They said to check back often starting in a week or two.

MacConnection were very honest and told me the first shipment of 2.5s were sold but offered to me put on the list for the next shipment.

CDW were less than honest and told me if I gave them my order the "2.5 could be there on Monday" which sounded fishy so I said I'd wait. They emailed me a "quote" (their idea) and conveniently added AppleCare to it (which I didn't order).

I called the Apple Store and a guy called Darren told me they were "available now". "Really, so they're shipping?" "No, but they're available" When I said 'thanks I'll call back' he hung up in my ear. ...scumbag.

That sucks. I had figured it was something that all of the retail stores did.

Kind of odd, I wonder if the NH Apple Store's willingness to run a list is because they're not one of the high-volume "flagship" stores like SF, Chicago or NYC?

I remember when the iPod minis were released one of the other NY Apple Stores would let you reserve one but would only hold it for 24 hours.

I'm not surprised at your experience with CDW, I deal with both MacConnection and CDW for my educational purchases at work and I far, far prefer dealing with MacConnection. Delightful people there and as you surmised, totally honest.

Good luck,

JT

I can't wait for the influx of Liquid Cooling photos that appear on the net :D
Now we just have to wait until they find their way over the seas to us :p

Or I could always settle for a few cluster nodes.

Actually, I've only seen one person on this site who actually has their G5. We are still waiting in the States... :(

invalpsion : the post you mentioned where a guy said he had received its 2.5, isn't really true, I guess he must of changed it back to a 2x2.0 and he stated he got a 2x2.0 instead of the 2x2.5 he wanted from his company :)

is that the guy you are talking about who already has its g5 or are you talking about jimsowdens company, who received 2 powermac 2.5s (possibly mistake by apple of some kind)

Check in the hardware forums under the thread "tons of new hardware today." The guy got his dual 2.5!!!!

He was mistaken. It turned out to be a 2.0. Awww.
