STATS 8-12

My spreadsheet for 8-12.

At the beginning of this week with 2 weeks before the 8-20 deadline, there were 63 orders with "on or before Aug 20".

So far we're "on fire!" this week with a whopping 11 shipment announcements.....does that classify as on fire?

That still leaves 52 orders with "on or before Aug 20". There are still 41 orders who's est ship date is not available. So we're at somewhere between 52 and up to 93 orders that need to ship in 7 days.

11 shipping date announcements in 4 days........
At least 52 more announcements need to be made in the next 7 days....

Anyone placing bets?

--E Order Facts update: 8-12 BLUE VELVET and CAL6N are the proud owners of the VERY FIRST G5's in Europe!!! Congrats!

BTW, Thanks for the kind words gang.

Good job! Such perseverance...

I expect a flood of 'got mine' messages over the next 48 hrs. don't know why, just do... :)

Shame I can't get into work & have a play with them.
All good things come to those who wait...

Seconded here!

Agreed, my delivery driver said there were "hundreds" in the Croydon depot thurs morning. Even allowing for exageration and that some will be 1.8s & 2s there should be plenty popping up all over the place.

I feel for you. Mine was delivered to my home. I actually managed to wait half an hour for Paul & Adrian (fellow mac-heads!) to arrive before slicing the tape.

"Elsie" is now purring quietly under my desk with 6 Gb of RAM, 2 x 250 Gb SATAs & 2 x 160 Gb ATA 133s on a tempo trio, running 2 folding cores.

Set-up assistant is cool. It took about 2 hours to "clone" my MDD setup of 106 Gb. I'm sure there'll be some tidying to do but, so far, everything's cool.

Well chuffed!

First impressions, anything new? What OS did it it ship with?

How quick is it? What's the 6gb of RAM for?

Maybe all this is a valid concern. While I still have a chance, perhaps I should downgrade to the NVIDA card or up it to the ATI 9800XT and avoid these issues. What's another 3 to 5 weeks........right?

I was trying to avoid the Apple Store tax and get the free 1 GB RAM from MacConnection. But if I go BTO, Apple store is the only alternative. It would also be nice to have the 250 GB drive and BT built in instead of a dongle.

Any body else feel this way or have an opinion either way?

:)

I wouldn't go upgrading to the 9800XT based on it not making that whirring noise that some people have mentioned the 9600 makes. I have the 9800XT in my machine and it makes what I guess some people are referring to as a "toy car whirring" noise.

Although I am aware of this noise, it really isn't enough to annoy me. This machine is actually a replacement for a Dell that had a horrible whine coming from, I believe, the power supply fan. I guess what I'm trying to get at is, it may all be relative to what you have been used to in the past. For a lot of folks on here, this is an upgrade from a previous Mac system, so they are used to a certain level of silence in their other systems. Whereas in my case, because I'm used to sitting next to a computer that sounds like wind tunnel tests are taking place in it, a little whirring noise every now and then isn't too big of a deal.

I guess the only thing I would worry about with this is, from a technical standpoint is this noise ok to have or is this something I'm going to pay for down the road? I really think that eventually a bios/firmware upgrade for the video card will solve this. I'm pretty sure the video bios collects heat information from the GPU and then adjusts fan speed accordingly. So I'm willing to bet that something just might be a little off in how the temps are being reported to the bios on the ATI cards, therefore resulting in these false fan throttle ups.

I would hold off on any upgrades that may delay your order any more than it is, especially when the decision is based on the very limited amount of information that is out there right now on these machines.

me too! me too!

well howdy all. i've been lurking, unregistered and watching this thread since it started; watching from the first few (dozen?) pages of gushing, glittering mac hope that we're all so good at, to the veritable death march of make-siddharta-choke suspense and impatience it is now. can you believe it'll break one hundred pages in a few days, especially when the flood of (mostly identical) benchmarks and pictures start? yow. do i sound critical? maybe. am i? no. why? because i'm going to be joining the ranks of the clamorning masses, oh, about five minutes ago.

yep, this late in the game, as the first orders are hitting homes and offices, i ordered my 2.5 DP G5.

see, the last time i opened a brand new, in the box computer that was mine was my PowerCenterPro 604/150 in 1996. over the next eight years (to the month) i used that, a used Wallstreet PB G3 (233MHz + 10.2 = whee!), and what sits on my desk now - a used 7600 with 375MHz G3 upgrade card, three monitors, and 10.2.8. yes, it works. no, it's not fun. so before it's ANOTHER 8 years before i get a new computer i'm going to crawl to the top of the pile and sit there for a while.

actually, no, scratch that. not crawling, scramjetting at Mach freakin' 7 to the top.

i ordered it with my once-a-lifetime Apple Developer Connection Hardware Purchase Program (ADCHPP?) at a significant discount (and, uh, a couple other things), but i don't think that will affect my ship date. ordering on 8-12-04, my ship time is 3-5 weeks (oh, la-dee-freakin-da, my APP ships the same day, thank you!). what's grueling is knowing that those other things on the order will ship waaaay before. like the eMac. patience... must have patience... don't worry, i'll add my info to the ship database.

as a side note, i strongly suggest you or any full-time university students you know to spend the $99 on the ADC Student Developer Membership. that $99 will save you twenty percent on systems, and varying amounts on peripherals. you can just do it once, but you can put a lot on the order...

so the final verdict is: DP 2.5GHz G5, 512MB, 250GB, SuperDrive, 9600xt 128MB, 56k, Bluetooth, AirPort Extreme, APP. i already have the 2x512MB Kingston sticks that will go into it (i guess they'll go into the PC games box, for now), and i'll be ordering a Western Digital Raptor 10k RPM 74GB SATA for the system drive.

let's review.

today: Power Macintosh 7600 + 375MHz G3, 304MB RAM, 2GB & 22GB HDDs.

3-5 weeks + shipping: Power Macintosh G5 Dual 2.5GHz, 1.5GB RAM, 74GB & 250GB HDDs.

oh, baby. OH BABY!

10.3.4 (don't know the build, I've already gone to 10.3.5)

It's bloody fast and quiet! I'll know more when I start using it

I was originally going for 2 Gb but after buying from crucial (when I ordered) I spotted 1 Gb sticks on Cancom's "falling price auction" site @ £90 per stick. I filled my remaining slots on principle! :D

I'm a VJ (part time) and I render my own CG clips. They're not huge but I make quite a few when I get stuck in. I've made a couple tonight and they roll out about 1/2 - 2/3 faster than my 1.25 duallie

10.3.5 with 2.5GHZ

You've seen a G5 2.5D in a store? Rumors were they were going to ship with 10.3.5, is why I am asking.

They are shipping with 10.3.5 I have this on a good authority..
That is why they released the OS at this time also.
It may have some additional enhancements for the liquid cooling management as well.

I am avoiding the 10k drives for Protools due to some issue with generating more heate in the machine. I would want to see more examples of success on how they perform with the liquid cooling power management system. It may be a nightmare I can't afford in my scoring work.

Duff-Man says...the liquid cooling is only for the processor area...the drive bay area is cooled by one of the other fans....I don't think this should be an issue....oh yeah!

I asked my supervisor for 3-4 days off "whenever my new Mac arrives", and he said "Sure!". So I took off at noon today and don't go back to work until Thursday next week! I have plenty of time to play with my new toy.

Boy this thing is FAST. Installing the OS was amazingly quick, as is everything else I've tried. I have yet to play a game or run a benchmark. Maybe tomorrow. I finally have everything migrated over and set back up.

The Setup Assistant does a really good job, but isn't perfect. I have two bootable partitions on my G4, and it didn't make it clear which it was migrating from. I needed to reinstall StuffIt Deluxe 8, re-register Snapx Pro X, re-register Canvas 9, and reinstall most drivers (as expected). It pulled nearly everything over from the G4, though, including my fink installation and other non-standard directories at "/". Oddly, it didn't copy over Xcode 1.5, though.

Wel you may want to check your "authority", cause the first machines have 10.3.4! and NOT 10.3.5

Klaus,

Couldn't there be any tricks or strings we can pull to get our Macs earlier. I think it's quite frustrating. Yesterday my status showed september 1st, today it showes september 3rd! that while a lot of other people get theirs in the very near future ( hence the hundreds of boxes in the warehouse in UK)

I have the feeling they are playing with us like: if we really have some leftovers we will ship to Belgium or something like that.

I really feel like calling Apple Benelux for caling what's going on.. or heck! they have their office about a quarter of where I work! maybe I should visite them...

GE4-ce, I know, but I don't think there's much we can do, cause I already called Apple Benelux a couple of times, to get some info regarding shipments to the reseller channel, and all they could say is "this is the online customer channel, I know nothing about the reseller channel, it's completely different".
I already checked in with my rep in ITPro Gent, and he said i'm the first in the list for a g5, but there's nothing more those poor shop owners can do, since they too depend on the 'goodwill' of Apple, to send some machines to the Benelux. Sometimes I feel I was best off ordering online, which I wanted to do in the first place, but then changed my mind cause of the support, and because I wanted to have my display and g5 purchased at the same time, so applecare would cover me, and since I ordered my g5 13th of june, and my display after wwdc, I wouldn't been able to do that online, but at my reseller, that was no problem at all. So actually, I don't mind very much, cause I remember being it the 1st of august, and thinking, omg I'm going to have to wait a whole other month for my machine, but now, it's already friday the 13th ( ), and 1st of august feels like yesterday. Time's flying, and the wait will soon be over, I always tend to look at it this way : I already made it to the first 2 months after ordering, so these 2 weeks won't take my pleasure away.

Hell, when I was still a kid (hmm, maybe i'm still one) my first computer was an apple performa 5300 powerpc (how many years ago is that)? So this G5 is not exactly my switch-computer, but I consider it to be, so the wait may be tough, the pleasure will be enormous.

Hang in there, when you got it, you'll look back at this period with a big smile on your face :D

Yeah, I know.. I'm just plain scared that's all! 3rd week of september, my school starts again. and it's my final year. I study animation. I really thought I would have had it in time to test it, and if it were DOA, to replace it etc. now I'm just afraid that it will arrive too late. or that I will have to start my first film on my 1ghz Powerbook. And in 3d animation, that's not really a nice road ahead.

maybe I will laugh about this in 2 weeks. but now I'm angry...

I also have some paid 3d work at the moment. I really could use the speed right now..

I understand how you're feeling Ge4-ce.

I'm in a similar boat with work, got a load of CG to do and I'm working off a 1ghz PB at the moment and waiting for the 2.5. I've given up worrying about it (been so long now anyway) and just plugging away with what I've got and when it comes it comes.

Saying that, if I'm not worried about it, why am I posting on a 'Dual 2.5GHz PowerMacs Shipping' thread?!

And our G5's... I really dont know, but I think it will be september for all poor belgium souls. Thats what apple belgium (headquarters) told me, I really think (fear) they have it right...

And how am I feeling? Temperatures dropped now, but
- was >35°C (95F) (bought airco few days ago, was deliverd in 8hours)
- waiting for release new G5's from new-year
- waiting for computer since 06/12
- no reliable information
- doing graphic work on G4 400 pci
- way to much work
...

30th August

Does anyone else have a estimated shipping date of on or before 30th August ?

I ordered on 17 July and my est. shipping date has never changed. I suppose that is a good thing. But I am off on holidays all of next week ! so i actually hope i does not arrive any sooner. If it arrives when i am not around, i presume it will get held locally in a warehouse somewhere ?

Should it also still be saying 'open' on the order status page ?

I ordered : G5 2.5 (standard RAM for now) + airport card + 23" display + applecare + UK keyboard

( i am English living in Barcelona, Spain so i wanted to the UK keyboard instead of the Spanish one )

Any G5's in Spain arrived yet ???

When a driver talks of hundreds of boxes you have to allow for exageration and the possibility that some are 1.8 GHz and 2 GHz. Also, the vast majority of orders (and deliveries) go unreported on forums such as these. Just hang in there, guys, and try to relax. I know it's frustrating but these babies are worth waiting for.

OK here is how to get your G5 2.5DP shipping confirmation:

1) hurl some gentle abuse their way via this forum
2) that's it!

My shipping confirmation just arrived from AppleStore UK.

Apple, you are still in the doghouse...

Now I'm really pissed off

Just spoke to a woman from my reseller. She know thinks that it will be a least another 2 weeks until they have any G5's of any kind!

This can't be right. I'm starting to think that there is actually little point in going to a reseller. Too late now thought. Waiting for confirmation of this from my usual rep via email.

Has anyone actually received a 2.5 from a reseller yet?
