But the sad truth is that a load of 2.5MP's will be used for nothing more.

I'm definitely one of those guys. :)

But, I'm a geek, and I like the best. Plus, it will last longer in my book. It may too much computer for me today, but three years from now, it'll be just right. (kinda like the 3 bears.)

Hey, can somebody confirm?

I'm pretty sure I read in this thread (but can't find it now) that some machines were going to be built in California instead of China in an effort to expedite.

I'm interested to confirm as I had some info from Apple that suggests mine will ship from California...I'm in the US.

Thanks.

When my G5 arrives, the first thing i'm going to install is Folding@Home.
Not for "fun", but for a great cause.... Okay, I admit. I'm a bit competive with regards of F@H (PowerBook and GF's computers are all running F@H, and I intend to have friends install it on their computers as well under my username! :p)

However, I do plan to use the G5 for other purposes. Webdesign, Video editing, and animation. So, it'll be put to good use. :-D

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven's heard of any ADC orders shipping, other than Ricebucket's I believe.

Why do they this to Developers??!! I thought we were supposed to be taken under their wing. I don't get why regular orders that came AFTER ours get priority. And they're of the same specs! I can't even complain to anyone, because the reps on the phone obviously can't do anything. 9/03 can kiss my a**. Grrrr........

Not everyone uses a computer for work, alot of people use it for play - but in this case I'd say he's using it for valuable research. Frankly I don't care what they use it for as long as they appreciate what they have.

Thanks Kosh66 for the valuable reply. Exactly my thoughts.

subb, I can't really say no offense taken although I know there is nothing personal but it's just because I really am irritated by people who think their time, work, life, etc is more valuable than others. Everyone here has their own deadline to work on. They aren't using your money or resources, so do us a favor and don't preach on how we should use our own resources in this world.

Just to clarify, my report is to indicate that I let the G5 run 24/7 just to bombard it with work load. It's to let others know that it is a workhorse. I did not buy a G5 just to run Folding@home 24/7 although I applaud if someone had the money to buy a similar machine for whatever research that can help better human lives.

My work involves picture editing with FCP, Avid, After-Effects, etc. So that is what I need the G5 for. FYI. As much as I would want to edit 24 hours a day, my body can't. So when I don't use the computer, I contribute its processing power and my electric bill cost for Folding@home. I don't care if people don't believe in this project or whatever other project. I am certainly not the one who will tell people what to do with their time and money. I got the G5 with my own money, so no one has the right to tell me how I should use the computer. People should do whatever makes them happy with the life they live.

G5 Serial number

This message is for the G5 2.5 owners who already received theirs. I am still UNABLE to register the unit online with Apple or over the phone. My serial number still isn't being recognized especially by the online registration. I read that one of the owners in this forum is also having a difficult time registering his for the same reason.

My AppleCare is still laying on my desk because even that can't be registered without a properly recognizeable serial number. I was told that they will be manually entering my serial number, but to date when I call Apple for service assistance the same thing happens - no serial number, no service. So I have to explain once more...blah blah blah.

Anyway, I wonder if someone has successfully entered their serial number for registration already and what, if any, should I do or tell them as a work-around solution.

Thanks.

Rocketfella - Not sure if it was built in California but mine has shipped from California.

Hope this helps. :)

Mate, you are absolutely right. My sincere apologies for making you feel that you had to justify yourself.

Ill spare you my excuses for being particularly frustrated last night, but I do recognise that doesn't give me the right to jealously vent at you.

My apologies again.

Hope your monster is still running smoothly!

Hell, for using Office and the Web you should have told him that an iBook or an eMac would have been more than adequate! ;)

Yeah... but the problem with that is the guy's ego... exactly like my dad; they don't do anything CPU intensive but they'd feel inadequate without a "pro" machine.

Its why my dad has a Ti that could beat the fsck out of my Pismo as I struggle to do 3D and multimedia work.

Sorta like the businessmen who get BMW's and H2's but do nothing more than drive 5 minutes to the train station and back every morning and evening.

According to Apple, mine will be shipped from Fullerton, California.

Say no more, I know far too many people like that! In my opinion, if all you care about is the best all the time, you'll never be happy and always be wanting "the next big thing", so it's not really worth it - and for what? It's definitely a big hit on the bank account in any case... My friend bought a 2002 Porsche 911 a couple years ago, but then when the newer "better" cars came out, well, heaven forbid he would drive an "old" 2002 model! So, he upgraded it for a 2003 911 Turbo... can't wait 'til I have that kind of $$$... ;) But hey, to each his own!

Hey uh... hehe... could I have that 2002 911?? :D

I got an email from apple this afternoon saying that my g5 has shipped! I ordered it on the 9th on June, and was originally estimated shipping on the 2nd of Aug, but then that was pushed back to 20th of Aug. But now it's shipped 5 days early :)

Shipped: G5 2.5DP; 1.5GB; 250GB; 9800 XT; educational; uk

Sorry man, he traded it in as part of the deal and then paid an extra $50k or whatever it was for the newer, Turbo model. He's let me drive it, the thing is amazing! (I should scan my pics of me in of it, actually...) The guy has a nice Ducatti as well which bought right in Rome...

The only car I know of that could outrun his Porsche in a pure drag race is my manager's 1969 Shelby Cobra, (she dyno'd it at 560+ hp, 0-60 in 3.4s, 1/4-mile in 11.5s @ 120 mph), but as for cornering, handling and all that, I don't know anyone personally who could match that 911 Turbo. A couple friends of mine have sweet Lotuses (Europa, Esprit, 7), one has a smoking 1966 Honda S600, but nothing much can touch that Porsche. Someday that'll be me!

I didn't know Apple shipped on Sundays...

Dual 2.5 GHz G5 Mini-Review

I've had my Dual 2.5 GHz G5 for a couple of days now (order 6:36AM PST on 6/9/2004, shipped from Shenzhen, CN on 8/10/2004, arrived at 11:54AM EST on 8/12/2004). My experience has been just about perfect so far!

The Setup Assistant has one flaw: it doesn't tell you WHICH disk its moving files from... My G4 had two internal HDDs; one was the main system drive and one was a clone of the main system drive (cloned automatically every Saturday morning by Carbon Copy Cloner). I wasn't sure if the right drive was being used, though... Once I dealt with this (removed the extra drive from the G4, as it was going to be placed in a FW enclosure for the G5 anyway), Setup Assistant did a good job, with the following exceptions (some of which are NOT its fault):
  • StuffIt Deluxe 8 needed to be reinstalled, context menus crashed the Finder until I do so
  • my time zone was not set to that of the G4
  • drivers (MS mouse, Logitech keyboard, Wacom tablet, Griffin PowerMate, Epson 3170 scenner, etc...) all needed to be reinstalled
  • some software needed to be re-registered (Snapz Pro X, Canvas, Marine Aquarium screen saver, Little Snitch)
  • BRU LE 2.0.8 for Mac OS X (backup software) needed to be reinstalled
  • Xcode 1.5 needed to be reinstalled (oddly, it's "/Developer/" directory was not coped AT ALL)
  • my printers were not migrated from the G5 and needed to be set back up
  • Norton AntiVirus 8's AutoProtect feature is disabled until I reinstall, but manual file scanning works fine

Overall, the Setup Assistant did a GREAT job, though. My user directory and most applications were transferred flawlessly, as was my large (2+GB) fink installation. Permissions were preserved, as were the VAST majority of system settings. This all made moving to the new G5 extremely easy.

I'll post later with some benchmarks. I don't have most of the games mentioned earlier. I do have Unreal Tournament 2004, Warcraft III, Command & Conquer: Generals, Neverwinter Nights, and Quake III, but I'm not sure how to benchmark them...

I got shipment notification today also , although I check the TNT website and tracking numbers do not show up yet.

I hope this is the start of Apple filling all the back orders. I checked the UK online store yesterday and they were quoting 3-4 wks for DP 2.5s and 1-3 days for DP2.0s so hopefully Apple are at last ramping up production or supply constraints are starting to clear.

I was the one of the owners that posted that he was having trouble registering the Applecare plan because the serial number wasn't recognized. To answer your question, I still can't either. I called Apple last week when I received my machine because the first thing I wanted to do was get this registered just in case there were problems with it, not to mention that seeing as how I spent the money on the plan, I wanted to get it activated.

I called Apple last week when it didn't work and the first person I talked to said the serial number didn't exist and just kept repeating that over and over. No explanation as to why, but eventually she just blamed it on me and said that I must be typing the serial number in wrong. Funny, seeing as how I was copying and pasting it from System Profiler.

Anyway, I tried later in the day and I still couldn't get it it to work. I made a second call to Apple and the woman I spoke with this time was much more helpful. She said that it would probably be a week before the numbers were entered. Last Friday was when I called, so I tried this Friday and nothing happened, still couldn't verify the serial number. I just now tried again and the same thing happened.

Then it sounds like the large shipment of IBM chips has indeed come in...

I just hope I won't have to wait until Friday for mine to ship. It would be rather lame to have overnite shipping and not get it till the following Monday. :D

Well there is no activity shown on the tracking website. I guess it's sitting in it's box somewhere waiting til monday for a driver to get it to me :) Will keep you updated tho.

The countdown starts, 76 days down 5 to go.
I'm hoping for a Monday shipment (so I could have it on Friday) but expect Wednesday to Friday.

cheers.

As I wait for my 2.5 I've been trying to find the best solution for RAM... I'm aiming to have 2.5GB (2x512 that come with my machine and 2x1GB extra).

So far the best price for 2x1GB PC3200 DDR400 chips is $450 at macsales.com. Has anyone had better luck finding RAM for these monsters?

Crucial.com usually has really good prices. That's where I bought my extra ram. Sice I don't have my 2.5 yet, the RAM is just sitting here all alone in the box. So sad.

So, if everything goes well, we'll start to see a lot more shipments this starting today apparently, as 2 people stated theirs have shipped, and probably a lot of other peoples too, who never post on this board.

Now deliver some to resellers!
