I purchase my Dual 2.5 GHz G5 with 1.0 GB (2x512MB) RAM from Apple (so I wouldn't be stuck with any 256MB memory sticks, and purchased a second 1.0 GB (2x512MB) RAM from Crucial.com. My system is properly showing 2.0GB RAM and has been perfectly stable since receiving it last Thursday. I've used Crucial RAM for years now, in my Macs and my PCs (and even in my HP LaserJet 1200 printer) with ZERO problems.

ATI 9800XT

for those of you who ordered the ATI 9800XT upgrade, i was curious about what added benefits does it have over the stock ATI 9600XT from a real-world performance standpoint. i'm thinking about ordering the upgrade but not sure it's worth the $300.

one more thing... anyone know of a place i can look at some in-depth benchmarks of the new dual 2.5?

I beg to differ. There is a significant difference with games, as shown.

Apple's OGL is bottlenecked, although hopefully this will change fairly soon with OS/driver changes.

If money is no object, then yes --- get the best card(s).

Happy to have you on board as a MacRumors folding member. F@H is a good use for a G5. All for the cause of medical research, hopefully with the influx of the 2.5 G5 we can regain #1 status again.

I started folding too but not for macrumors....
Ive already hit 2500 points in just 1 week

Samsung does manufacture Apples PC3200 memory. You can actually buy this exact OEM memory from MemoryX ( http://store.yahoo.com/memx/m9298ga.html ) at a discount, of course. But I cannot see any difference between the OEM and the Swissbit RAM ( http://store.yahoo.com/memx/mxm9298ga.html ); it even appears the chips on the board are made by samsung. All I can tell is that the OEM memory has more metal on it.

Hi, recursivejon. I think Apple relies on different memory manufacturers based on price and tech specs they need. For example I checked my 1GB DDR memory for the G5 2.5 and the OEM sticks in a Hynix. I also just came from my local Apple Retail store and purchased additional 1GB memory. I specified the EXACT part number as stated in the Apple web site (because yesterday when I was buying they were giving me the part number for the rev A G5). I wrote the part number this time on paper, gave it to the salesperson to dictate it to their personel in the stock room. They had those in stock (yesterday the salesperson said there was none in stock and was in fact giving me the old part number) and I took it.

So I bring it home today and installed it. Surprisingly the memory in use for this part number is Micron Technology. I compared the etching on the chips and both had the same specs down to the latency of CL3, which was a relief since Apple Discussion forums have numerous problems with mixing memory from different manufacturers.

Hopefully both sticks will work well together. I'll know in a couple of days after pushing both to the test with FCP. Will also be running hardware testing.

Intruiging... well mixing and matching memory shouldn't hurt a thing as long as its got the same specs.

Duff-Man says..yes...Apple buys ram much the same way they buy hard drives - they put out a tender/take bids on a bulk order based on the specs they require...just lake almost every other computer manufacturer does...oh yeah!

Alright. Come on people! We need more reports of shipping, unpacking, the smell of styrofoam, and other Christmas morning giddiness! Well?! The last buzz is starting to wear off! :) Maybe we need to start an 'office pool' on the next bulk shipment!

Post #2476 will be the first post on page 100, viewing 25 posts per page.

See, now if I had my brand-spankin' new Dualie 2.5 to figure that out, I would'nt be wasting my time now would I?! ;) I really need some caffeine about now! For all you do, this buzz is for you! 'Til the morrow!

Can't....wait....any....longer....aagh......

I'm going postal! It's become some sort of surrealistic nightmare. Will I ever get this fricking machine, or what? What episode of twight zone was that...or was it outer limits?

Sorry, just losing it. Hope this makes the 100th.

Misery loves company and I feel for you y'all!

Let us prey.

Please lord, worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my freiends, won't you please get Apple to ship my 2.5 GHz G5 benz?

Hang in there, but I'm (almost) ready to hang it up.

Keep the faith.....it's comming. I think....I must believe.....can't.....wait...any....longer...... aaaaggghhhh!!!!!

Sorry, thanks for your collective indulgence....I'll be alright....It's a simple pill called "compose"....... :)

Also, just out of curiousity, has there even been a 100 page thread here at Macrumors.

Don't get me wrong, it's crazy when I think about it, but I would guess other topics would of also achieved such length.

I predict some more people will get the Sep. bump and then their machines will ship before Thur.

Most 8/20 people will not. It looks like 15% of people who ordered in June (correct me if I'm wrong) have rec'd or are tracking orders.

People, this is not even 1 in 5.

I'm thinking now that my cutoff will be Sep. 15th -- my cancel date. This is a frustrating time where I may have to order a computer that has been out for over a year. Moving to the PC isn't really an option (even if it weren't horrible) as I have too much money invested in software for the Mac platform.

Arrrrg. :(

I hope there will be some shipping too, for all the people who have been waiting so long! It's kinda sad to see some people nagging about having to wait until first week of september for their dual 2.5 (apple discussions), but if you look at their order date, it says 7/29! Sjeesh, they have no patience at all, compared to us :p

This message is for the G5 2.5 owners who already received theirs. I am still UNABLE to register the unit online with Apple or over the phone. My serial number still isn't being recognized especially by the online registration. I read that one of the owners in this forum is also having a difficult time registering his for the same reason.

LeonPro and Zaphryon,

This is normal for brand new models. Apple has to enter all of the serial numbers of the shipped machines. There is always a lag time in the beginning.

I have experienced it many times. Give it a week or two (unless you need service now) and then you will be able to register it.

Ram pricing

As I wait for my 2.5 I've been trying to find the best solution for RAM... I'm aiming to have 2.5GB (2x512 that come with my machine and 2x1GB extra).

So far the best price for 2x1GB PC3200 DDR400 chips is $450 at macsales.com. Has anyone had better luck finding RAM for these monsters?

Have you checked out RamSeeker ?
