About adding RAM, when I ordered my dual 2.5 I said I also wanted to have an extra 1 gig of ram from the reseller itself, and I asked him not to install it in the machine, cause I didn't want someone to open the box before I did, bet he thinks I'm a very weird person, but I don't think I am, cause of all the people here who take so much pictures of their g5 while opening the box, chasing fedex vehicles etc.

thx for not making me feel nerdish :D :D

How many of you got the NVidia 6800 with your G5?

Of those people, how many have gotten their orders?

I ordered with the 6800 ultra but have not received it yet. My on or before ship date is 9/03. You should look at solo-act's spread sheet for info like that.

nevermind, sry

Yeah Appleworks made it look like ass but I see now

The answer is: 1 person

1 person who has ordered a G5 with a 6800 has gotten it (at least, from those polled)

Just added

Just added my order to the site database (hey, first order from Finland!). The reseller I ordered from was briefed by Apple last Monday - they were just ramping up production in the Ireland facility, and the very first machines from there shipped last week to European distributors.

My order (placed June 10th) should have been shipped at the end of last week and arrive early this week. Here's hoping, anyway...

G5 2.5Ghz/8GB/500GB/9800XT/Airport Extreme/Bluetooth/PCI-X Ethernet/no modem/AppleCare.

Where do you see that one 6800 card has been shipped? am I missing something

Woops sorry guys, Appleworks 0wn3d the spreadsheet and I misread the legend.

Damn, I almost had my hopes up :(

Who's placing bets on whether it'll be delayed past 8/20?

ugh

I tried to update my entry in this list, but it does not work... what's wrong with it? The error message says: "The page cannot be found"

I think it's rather simple, there is no update.php on that webserver :) Gecko has a social life as well I reckon :D

Nice, but I bet Belgium is not one of their main european distributor countries , at least some resellers will get some machines :)

Thanks guys for the info re: shipping from question.

I had a thought about the reality of the Aug. 20 estimate. If this is for many in the US and Europe, and the two continents have different manufacturing locations, it rather depressingly would suggest that it isn't based on manuf. capacity.

This is getting ridiculous...

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APP...A5iF5B5VKId3MLQWKI2qNcriBt/5.0.9.1.0.6.45.0.1

The standalone NVidia 6800 Ultra DDL's are now not slated to ship until September.
I'm hoping this is only because Apple is trying to get all the 2.5 Ghz / 6800 orders off before they start shipping the standalone cards.

If they delay my order again, I'm just going to cancel. At that point I wouldnt have any time to use it before my senior year starts. And I know I'm not going to have lots of time to just create and design when school starts. I might as well wait for the 3.0's and use the thing in the spring.

As for the display, I'd have to return it. Even if I did have an adapter to hook the thing up to my current machine (a Pismo with 8MB of VRAM) it couldn't drive the thing at it's native res with Millions of Colors.

Edit: Grammar

I guess that's what happening, but add this to the fact that Nvidia is having a hard time getting pc card versions of the 6800 out of their fab into the stores and you have the same story all over again..

apple is waiting supply from other companies.. sigh

Mate, you are absolutely right. My sincere apologies for making you feel that you had to justify yourself.

Ill spare you my excuses for being particularly frustrated last night, but I do recognise that doesn't give me the right to jealously vent at you.

My apologies again.

Hope your monster is still running smoothly!

Hi, subb. I guess it's just the pressure from all our work and the fact that Apple couldn't fulfill orders as promised that's making everyone edgy already. Can't blame you. Here's hoping everyone finally receives their orders pretty soon.

Aside from the defective Airport Express cable, the beast has been quietly running. I guess I'm lucky checking the Apple Discussions how many people have so many problems with the G5. But there shouldn't be any error in the first place before they ship it out.

Have a good day.

I was the one of the owners that posted that he was having trouble registering the Applecare plan because the serial number wasn't recognized. To answer your question, I still can't either. I called Apple last week when I received my machine because the first thing I wanted to do was get this registered just in case there were problems with it, not to mention that seeing as how I spent the money on the plan, I wanted to get it activated.

I called Apple last week when it didn't work and the first person I talked to said the serial number didn't exist and just kept repeating that over and over. No explanation as to why, but eventually she just blamed it on me and said that I must be typing the serial number in wrong. Funny, seeing as how I was copying and pasting it from System Profiler.

Anyway, I tried later in the day and I still couldn't get it it to work. I made a second call to Apple and the woman I spoke with this time was much more helpful. She said that it would probably be a week before the numbers were entered. Last Friday was when I called, so I tried this Friday and nothing happened, still couldn't verify the serial number. I just now tried again and the same thing happened.

Hi, Zaphyron. Yeah, it's darn frustrating that I can't get mine to register, too. First I wait every day for the shipping notice. Then I wait every day for the FedEx tracking update. Then I wait every day until Apple officially recognizes their own serial number.

I'm in the same boat when I talk to an Apple rep and they think I'm crazy, dyslexic or blind, perhaps, or whatever because they think I can't read my serial numbers correctly. "Sir, can you read that again." "Can you close the computer and read it from the case". Blah blah.

I did write to AppleCare about this and here was their reply:

"Dear Apple Customer,

Thank you for your email.

We apologize for the delay in the registration of your PowerMac G5. As you are aware, the serial number was not record properly in our database. To ensure the integrity of our records there are a number of checks and balances that occur to input your serial number. This process was initiated on 08/12/04 and typically takes 5-7 business days. We suggest trying again at the end of the week. Again, we apologize for the delay and appreciate your patience. We are working quickly to resolve this.

Best regards,
The Online Support Services Team
Apple Computer, Inc."

Yeah, whatever! They've been saying this since day 1 of my registration, August 6. Now they're saying the process started August 12. Let's see at the end of the week.

Just venting out. Still glad to get a rather good working G5.

Crucial.com usually has really good prices. That's where I bought my extra ram. Sice I don't have my 2.5 yet, the RAM is just sitting here all alone in the box. So sad.

I'm curious (and wary) about purchasing memory not from Apple. Of course Apple doesn't manufacture their own memory, but at least they certify it to work, right?

Some say Crucial manufactures the memory for Apple, others say Samsung, etc. I guess the truth is that Apple sources from different manufacturers based on their prices and specs to fit the model.

My concern is that apart from the USD50 savings by trying out other manufacturer brands, are the sticks truly compatible?

1. Because I did build Windows PCs years ago and I am aware of the different timing issues as dictated by the SPD of the memory.
2. I'm also thinking that when the memory does fit a different model, the part number is the same. Case in point my wife's iBook and my PowerBook have the same memory specs and part number by Apple. So I did interchange them and allocated more memory to the ageing iBook.
3. The memory part number of the rev B G5 is different from the rev A G5. That could mean the memory is different due to the tighter specs of the new machines that need better timing issues and certified according to the JEDEC standard. Of course the old memory of rev A machines can and will work with rev B machines since the general specs are the same. But the question is: is the timing the same?
4. The problem with this is that if you did put a slower memory, then the operation will only be as fast as the slowest stick. We're also talking milliseconds here, but the fact that we care to order the fastest machine means we want the fastest performance.

I don't want to have someone reply and hit back on something that isn't obvious here. I'm not starting a debate or anything. I'm also not saying patronize Apple's ridiculously high prices. I just hope Apple is open about their specs and can certify memory manufacturers according to their requirements. That way the competition will benefit us for lower prices.

I bet there're going to be some changes at Apple after this.

I bet cancelations are in the hundreds.

Hi everyone. Update features and some more functions will be live asap. The site seems to have become far more popular than I expected, so some code will need to be revised. Please let me know if there is a feature you would like to see added, and I will do my best to include it.

Confirmed features that are on the way.

Edit order info.
Highlight overdue orders.
View order recipient details.
Upload photos of the machine when it arrives.
Write a review of the machine when it arrives.

Ps: Ironically. I had an email from Apple last thing Friday night, saying my order shipping will be delayed from 16th Aug, to 3rd September. I am hoping this is a clerical error, and my machine will in fact ship as promised by the Apple sales people, tomorrow. Please. Please. Please.

Samsung does manufacture Apples PC3200 memory. You can actually buy this exact OEM memory from MemoryX ( http://store.yahoo.com/memx/m9298ga.html ) at a discount, of course. But I cannot see any difference between the OEM and the Swissbit RAM ( http://store.yahoo.com/memx/mxm9298ga.html ); it even appears the chips on the board are made by samsung. All I can tell is that the OEM memory has more metal on it.

At OWC ( http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=6077&Item=OWC3200DDR2GBPKIT ) they claim that the RAM "Exceeds Apple/Intel Specifications." This is the best value I've found for G5 RAM out there, and what I'm actually going to get if my G5 EVER gets here.

Anyway this is what i've found out, im sure if OWC was selling RAM that didnt meet Apple's specs then Apple would be all over them saying that their ram "exceeds" the specs.

When my G5 arrives, the first thing I'm going to install is Folding@Home.
Not for "fun", but for a great cause.... Okay, I admit. I'm a bit competive with regards of F@H (PowerBook and GF's computers are all running F@H, and I intend to have friends install it on their computers as well under my username! :p)

However, I do plan to use the G5 for other purposes. Webdesign, Video editing, and animation. So, it'll be put to good use. :-D

Happy to have you on board as a MacRumors folding member. F@H is a good use for a G5. All for the cause of medical research, hopefully with the influx of the 2.5 G5 we can regain #1 status again.
