For what it is worth I have a 8/29/2003 est. ship date for a Dual Proc 2 Ghz... I called apple today to update credit card info (taking no risks) and the guy 'researched it' and told me my machine was being built at that moment... literally. There was a box with my name on it.

For those hoping for an overnight delivery this weekend, I was told their carrier agreement does not include saturday delivery.

Shipping is close though. Very close.

When did you order? I ordered on 6/26 and am still showing a ship date of tomorrow. I spoke with the Apple store on Tuesday and the lady told me that it should ship, but it's not like she did anything special to check.

Odd about no Saturday delivery. Maybe this is just for the G5s? I got my 23" CD delivered overnight on a Saturday via FedEx. I got the free shipping, so it looks like ground for me. Oh, well. My wife want me to spend some time with the family this weekend anyway.

Apple pushes dual G5 ship dates

Apple pushed dual G5 ship dates today.
My order made on 6/23 was scheduled to ship 9/3 from Macconection.
They just told me that Apple updated them today and pushed all ship dates for the dual's to 9/19.
C R A P!

FedEx sometimes will deliver items before they're obligated if they have the delivery capacity free. It clears out orders and makes the best use of people they have to have on hand anyway for unexpected spikes in demand.

like the last post read, fed ex will ship if it has the capacity to do so. most distribution centers close at 4 pm local time on saturday, so check your package tracking, and if the package is at the facility and not on a truck, call them up and ask them if you can come pick the package up. i have a dual shipping priority overnight that's scheduled to ship tomorrow, and lord knows that's what i'll be doing :D

I ordered my G5 in June several days after WWDC, I live only 3 hours from Apple HQ in Cupertino and 3 hours from the assembly facility in Sacramento - my G5 has yet to arrive. Apple has a huge demand for these new machines and appears to be on track - we have all waited for years for them to move forward from the MOTO MESS and the future looks bright finally - lets give Apple some credit & support.
I TOTALLY agree!! If we in the US were ordering something made in Europe we would never expect to receive it at the same time as Europeans. I, too, live in California, ordered a 1.8 on July 23 via Authorized Reseller (to avoid paying sales tax), and haven't heard word one. At the time of my order, I was told, "August or Sept" for delivery time. The wait is killing me but I know it will be worth it! Anyone else order through PowerMax in Portland, OR?

I just changed my shipping on my dual from expedited (2 day) to priority overnight this morning. the guy told me it would be delivered on the 2nd, but maybe the 3rd because of the holiday. Also, I just got an email from the apple store saying that my DVI to Video adapter (part of the G5 order) had already shipped today with fedex. I'm guessing that means the G5 could be out the door either today or tomorrow and meet me at school next week :-D

FedEx is closed on Monday, Sep. 1. However, if your package is being shipped by Standard Overnight and meets the shipping deadline on 8/29, it must arrive on by 3:00 p.m. on 9/2. If it does not, you are entitled to a full refund of the shipping costs. (Apple will have to request the refund and you'll have to get a credit from Apple.)

Apple does not appear to offer Priority Overnight (which guarantees delivery by 10:30 a.m.) or Saturday delivery, at least not for personal, education, or business orders.

Makes sense. What I know is when I called Apple this morning to change my shipping method from two day to overnight (so IF they shipped tomorrow Friday I would not have to wait all weekend) I was told they do not have a contract for Saturday delivery. Perhaps if Fed-Ex out of the kindness of their heart chooses to that is a different question. My past experience would lead me to call Fed Ex, not apple, once you have a tracking number and ask them to put it on the truck for you....

I just ordered (and unordered) a 1.8 Ghz G5 base model, and it said that the est. shipping was 7-10 business days, and I live in Canada!

Exactly. Last holiday weekend of the summer, great weather for most of the USA is expected. ENJOY IT. There are better things to do than this... (now if I can only find her number again) ;)

OT

Apple has a horrendous record with shipping. They are at the will of their suppliers. With the way that Apple communicates to their customers (lack thereof), this could all be perfectly on time. We would never know. That is what bothers me most. "To ship in August" is about the lamest cop-out ever. Give me a real date, otherwise just say "soon" or "as fast as we can" or something. I would have rather the G5 was announced last week, with the phrase "shipping starts Monday September 25th 2003." Much bigger impact in my book.

But what do I know? (rhetorical question guys ;))

No Change Here

I have been reading these forums for a while now, but have never posted anything....however, since I've pre-ordered a Dual G5 I thought I'd jump in. I ordered mine on 6/23....my order status still shows 8/29/03 and my credit card has yet to be billed. I'll keep you guys posted if something changes.

Yeah but they don't ANNOUCE that they will ship the same time and the let this date just pass on. Apple basicly says: Order a G5 now and have it delivered - hmmm- sometime...

You say the same thing in two separate posts hoping to make it fact. I have not seen a single case where Apple has not met or beat the shipping time estimated at order with the G5. In fact, a majority of people have mentioned their date was moved up since the time of order, and a few have received their units before the final time estimated! One can hope that the same is true with the Dual-G5, but statistically, the higher end machines would be subject to more variance: the estimation is further in the future, the yield on 2Ghz would be lower, and there is the danger of bugs in the dual processor design.

Also, it is impossible to predict the future with 100% certainty. An earthquake in Taiwan or a power outage on the east coast can have an impact that will ripple down the supply chain. You are simply asking for the impossible. Even Dell and Walmart.com, probably sometimes misestimate their ship dates by a bit and they are the kings of such things.

If you want to bitch, go to AMDzone. AMD has missed the target launch of the Athlon64 by over a year and Microsoft backpedaled any release date of a Windows OS targeting it. Oh yeah, when was Longhorn supposed to ship?

Finally, you obviously don't have much experience with Apple.com. There are a number of people who can enlighten you about the G4 PowerMac release of 1999!

(P.S. if you are using a Mac and Safari, you can turn on Edit>Spelling>Check Spelling As You Type, it would give your posts much more authority).

I'm not even going to address the "Apple is not a worldwide company" rant. I understand that many of you are anticipating your new machine so the tension can be a bit high. ;)

Take care,

terry

An individual posted on a couple of boards who had a quoted 8/27 delivery date on a CTO 1.8 GHz that was delayed to 9/11. Unclear what channel he was in, but he did indicate that he was buying directly from Apple.

I don't know what you're talking about, but about 3 weeks ago I called apple to update my shipping to the highest and possible method that they have available, and now my order status shows that i do indeed have 'Priority Overnite' shipping... so i don't know what this does or does not mean.

Priority Overnight is not listed on the shipping options on their website, but maybe it's available if you ask for it. I think I may try it and find out!

Interestingly enough, if you buy a 1.6GHz or a 1.8GHz G5 today, regardless of CTO or standard stock, they will ship in "7-10 days," but the 2.0GHz machines ship in "4-6 weeks."

This leads me to ask a dumb question -- are the machines manufactured in the same location? Or, is this an element of the demand for the Dual machines and the limitation on IBM's supply? (No, I'm not getting at a Moto-esque problem.)

yeah man, check that out. i don't remember if it was an available option when i ordered the g5, but that's exactly what my order says now, so maybe they did something special, maybe not. all i know is that i'm going to be really ticked if it ships tomorrow and i can't get it on saturday.... really ticked.

I second that. Some people do not understand the logistics of distributing a product worldwide. Information can be channeled almost instantaneously. Until a G5 can be dematerialized in California and rematerialized in Europe, keep holding your breath.

1.6 on display at the Apple Store in Milwaukee. Very nice. Fast, but not as super-fast as I hoped. I guess that will be the dual 2. All there stock was pre-sold, and they told me that 1.8 also arrived. More on the way, so they said.

It looks soooo nice, though. You can sort of see the fan running behind the grate, which looks nice. Quite as anything.

1.6 G5 in stock at the Grove

I just got back from the Apple Store at the Grove in Los Angeles, where a couple of demo G5s are on display (1.6 and 1.8GHz models).

A couple employees told me that there is (as of a few minutes ago) one 1.6 model in stock and ready to sell to whichever lucky customer asks for it first....

Same is true for the cars you mention.

I think Apples policy of anouncing "virtual" shipping dates, that are not met is VERY BAD, regardless of the country. I need a new computer really bad (using a Powerbook G3 at the moment) and want to know when I can go into a store and buy a G5, so I can plan accordingly.

Uhmm the parts may be made in foreign countries, but the final product is ASSEMBLED in the U.S. As for cars, the same goes for that as well.

If you have Priority Overnight shipping, then you should receive it on Saturday if it ships Friday. If you have Standard Overnight you probably will not receive it on Saturday but instead the following Tuesday, as Monday's a FedEx holiday.

Depends on the car, of course.

I've had two Miatas and now a Nissan 350Z, and all were completely manufactured in Japan.

It's a nice problem to have... all the fanatacism...anticipation etc....but... you still can't have your CEO stand up on stage and promise a product and not deliver....It is pretty slimey to say August (cause everyone will naturally think 01 August) then push a few out the door on the 29th of the month. They should have said September if they get a few out early, great! they would have looked like heros instead of goats. I'm a switcher my first Apple.... let me tell you a little story for all the haters out there....
I took a friends old old imac... running like 8.6 or early nine...and with a paper clip and about 20 minutes had installed the most current version of Jaguar (10.2 at the time) and memory and it was running like a champ. No problems at all... Now let me tell you about trying to upgrade a wintel box. Going from Windows 98 to XP was a nightmare it has been about a year...countless hours of debugging looking for drivers etc on the phone with tech support from Microsoft transfered to level 2 techs etc... result DVD playback doesn't work also there is no sound ( I was told to go out and buy a new sound card becuase it would never work) and other crashes and hangups with no explanation or no cure... A wintel machine will never be as fast as an mac because of all the downtime and nonsense... I spent more time trying to get the computer to work than I did doing work on the computer. All the people who come here to hate and bash macs should get a life and a job in tech support for Microsoft..but then would have to move to India.. hmmmm that wouldn't be so bad....
