Now you're looking directly at the problem. 70$ is about 10% of the whole thing. But you'll also need a GPU, which isn't exactly cheap; a hard drive, a display, a combo drive...then you need some people who develop the thing and some who put it together; you need some more for support and then there's marketing...this computers already are pretty darn cheap for what they do. The Intel switch helps, but not by lowering the price of the CPU.

I think that we are missing something, or some of the facts are wrong. There is no way in hell that apple can rise significantly if they don't move some of there laptops to the actual cheaper consumer market.

amateurmacfreak said:
And how do we know that Steve hadn't been planning this since before the CPU switch was announced?

Agreed. Still, Acer has quite a track record in developing Intel-based laptops.

It wouldn't suprise me to see Apple pull out something amazing in Intel laptops at MWSF, not in the least.

It would surprise ME, but then I really like to be surprised, so maybe that doesn't count. :)

Hey, it's what we do! This is a forum, right? ;)

I can't recall the exact details of that chart. The rumors are that Intel has made some real breakthroughs at the 45nm process level. Yonah is made with a 65nm process. The message is that the really exciting stuff is yet to be announced.

Merom will be made in a 45nm process, although it's possible that the first version will still be a 65nm processor if there are any problems with 45nm..

Well, there is a lot of room to make the 1,35" iBooks thinner, 1" thin in PowerBooks is enough for me..
The low-voltage L2300 & L2600 versions of the Yonah that will be inside of the iBook allow this..

we shall see in a week, but what about prices eh?

Does everybody forget Apple product launches so easily? Up to two weeks before everybody gathers info on other "similar" products that are expected to be innovated in some way by Apple, and Apple only releases a product with half of what you were expecting.

Yes. In this pre-MWSF frenzy, it might be a good idea for everyone to take a moment to re-read that classic work of Apple analysis, "The Apple Product Cycle". You won't find a better description of how the whole thing works

Possibly. But the times when computer manufacturers had big margins are definitely over. And by switching to Intel, Apple at least managed to secure components that are similarily priced for their competition.

And maybe they won't rise. It's just something we have to take into account. Altough having to use Windows would most likely make me stop using computers alltogether...

Some of the people I work with have older model TravelMates, and I really hate typing on those curved keyboards. I think it would really take getting used to. I hope Apple's new 'Books don't design their keyboards the same way.

And 6.6 lbs for that kind of machine isn't really that bad. Besides, when you're carrying 79.8 lbs of books in your bookbag for over a mile, 6.6 lbs doesn't really make too much of a difference - at least not to me! :p

Meh, I guess it would suprise me a bit too, but I guess I just plan to get suprised by Apple. :) I think we'll at least see some good iBooks though... think so?

they wont. the example of the travel mate just contains the same processor as supposed future macs. Dont assume that computer will be in any way similar to the ne notebooks from apple.

i hope and think so. I think it is universal knowledge that at least an ibook update is due.

lol! I guarantee you that the windows "gadgets" wont compare to mac's widgets. PLus keep in mind you may need a bit of extra memory running windows with all these "gadgets" THEY WILL SUCK
yep... Macintosh widgets should just always be the best. :( We're the first. It would be so unfair. ;) I hate Konfabulator too the ("widget" program for Windows and a Mac version too, as you probably know...) it's so annoying and obtrusive and... Dashboard is so beautiful and stream-lined. :D

whoa. quickly flying away from the newbie status... Which is good.:) Just commenting. XD Welcome to MacRumors, anyway! Not that I should be speaking,:( I let my posts go for a bit and have a low average for each day and am just classified as "member."

Yeah, Apple certainly doesn't have a problem in the aesthetics department, but I didn't think they'd go that route with keyboards anyway. And I didn't mean to sound like I was assuming the Acer was going to be similar to the 'Books either...heh.

Thats exactly it. Every part of the mac OS works ttogether as one. With windows everything seems so seperated. Definitely not together. Things that work together work better.

I personally am dying to know what they will look like. APPLE is amazing!!!!!!!!!!

"Also remeber one thing. Apple can afforrd to go with slower processors because the MAC OS is much more simple than windows. Ever wonder why when your ibook had a 500 mhz processor it still outperformed a windows pc with a 1.5 ghz processor. The MAC OS is easier on a processor than windows."

You are KIDDING me?! You don't believe that for real, do you?

1-500MHzx Macs NEVER outperformed 1.5GHz PC's! Get out of your Steve Jobs-induced illusions, please.

2- Mac OS X is a MONSTER CPU, GPU and memory hog, which explains why many apps run in a VERY sluggish manner on anything but the top PowerMacs. Windows sucks, but like its a much lighter system to run.

Well,
At least we can pre-empt dual core iBooks?

It would be nice to be able to say that, but who knows. Apple has been known to be mysterious and surprising. We might not see any of what we are discussing. I do hope that we do though.

my issue with your opinion is that if you are right then mwsf is just a total waste of time so people can have ipod shuffles with more space
haha, never thought of it that way.
And, who cares about the iPod shuffle? Oops, nevermind... forgot it's fairly popular. Yep, it's popular. I guess. Right?

Hey did you not hear, Apple is changing the name of MacWorld to iPodWorld. Thats right it going to be iWSF 2006. ;)

Why am I hearing "If it ain't white, it ain't right" in my head?

If everything worked together and other programs, accessories, etc were pointless the tech industry would crash into a million pieces and so would the US economy. Apple users need to move AWAY from this "everything together....must.....everything in the same place..... IT ALL HAS TO LOOK THE SAME!" and twitching. "We want iPods so small they fit UP the rectum and we can hear music inside our head."

Microsoft will always be the business darling because it BREEDS business. Apple does not; Atleast not to the same extent.... and ax the less-than marketshare crap.
