Well, there a few versions of Yonah, and the real improvement in power consumption will come with Merom in june, wich will only need 5w in a dual core configuration performing 2x faster than Yonah.. (Or that is what the Intel public roadmap says..)

Anyway, everyone knows that the topend Yonah processor was going to be power-hungry, in the same way the Pentium M 2,12Ghz uses more power than the typical 1,6Ghz version.. The hotspot is the low-voltage one, or even the 1,83Ghz version..

Is merom a laptop processor? If so would apple switch chips from yonah when merom comes out?

I heard that Apple pays about 70$ for the G4 in the iBook...

That doesnt make much sense. If that is true ibook prices would have to raise wouldnt they. Apple wouldnt do that. If they were gonna use the ibooks to compete with the consumer pc market. raising the price sure as hell wouldnt help.

Sure you may. Yes, the PowerBooks are in serious need of a speed upgrade. But that doesn't help at all when inventing a laptop. It's not like they got tons of new hardware just hiding behind Steve's back. They surely want to announce and ship the great stuff, but that doesn't mean they don't have to put these systems together first. Acer has most likely been working on this laptop before Apple announced their CPU switch. And it's definitely worse to ship a product that is not ready for prime time than to sell machines that are not the fastest anymore. For 90% out there, the PowerBook still has enough horsepower, and Apple has to be careful with their first Intel-based Mac (= it HAS TO convince everyone, because that's what decides Apple's future). They can't take the risk to rush out something that isn't working.

I'd love to see a new PowerBook next week, but I just can't see it happen. As for the iBook, I think it's more likely. But the question remains: Should Apple take the big risk, just to prove that they can do it even faster than they told us?
Ok, thanks. I definitely see the reasons there, especially with hardware and all, but I feel that some Mac laptop has to get updated at MWSF, and I don't think the Powerbook would happen 6 months after. I could see iBooks in January and Powerbooks in February though, quite easily. A few months of the iBooks being close/equal to the Powerbook in speed wouldn't suprise... so maybe even in March...but 6 months? That I highly doubt. And how do we know that Steve hadn't been planning this since before the CPU switch was announced? It wouldn't suprise me to see Apple pull out something amazing in Intel laptops at MWSF, not in the least.
Oh, and I don't mean to sound up on some little arrogance throne:rolleyes: ... I am willing to admit that I am fairly new to the computer world, and therefore, fairly ignorant. :)

What I would really like to see in the next generation PowerBooks is biometrics fingerprint scanner built into the touchpad. No ugly little square on the laptop itself. Put it into the touchpad and do away with passwords or at least let the key chain deal with it and all you need to do is give your PowerBook the finger. :D

Or they could put it on the side...

PC specs as a clue to Apple specs?!?

A little wobbly... a little queasy...

OK, I'm good!

I'm glad it's not a "superthick" (at least, judging by the picture it seems no thicker than the current AlBook 15's) and I'm looking forward to the coming months from Apple.

Well, actually is thicker, it's ibook like thick (1.35 inch) vs 1.1/1.0 inch of the PowerBook 15"/17"...
The rumored PowerBook with yonah is supposed to be thinner than the actual PowerBook..

6 hours battery life, uh oh. What happened to lower power=longer life. Good looking laptop but Apple will include an iSight in the lid. Heck, they should update the Cinema Displays with built-in iSights.

The lid looks really thick, perhaps because of the camera. I'd rather have a thinner lid and a separate camera like an iSight. I like the ability to use it as a hand held camera and I need the ability to leave the camera behind when visiting some customers that don't allow cameras on-site.

The battery is 87 WHrs. That is nearly double the capacity of the battery used in the PB.

Give me those specs, iSight, built in wireless internet (like Verizon but with Airport and bluetooth as well), fast os switching, in a dark aluminum powerbook package and i will buy that same day. ONE MORE WEEK.

EDIT: Also give me a bigger hard drive and better speakers than my current pb.
That would amaze. I want one.... *lost in happy dreamland with visions of beautiful, amazing Apple products whirling around my head, where wireless internet is free, fast, and abundant, where everyday is a leading up to a Mac event day where...* ok. getting a little ahead of myself. :) :D

An apple laptop to match these specs?... no way...

Yes, its sad, but very true.

Its only recently that Apple started putting 512MB in iBooks and iMacs, and not too long ago since PowerBooks had more than 256MB.

Oh, forget about that graphics card in a powerbook...

It's been weeks since I hadn't posted anything on MacRumors. But seeing as new laptop rumors are here once and again, well here I go again as well.

Does everybody forget Apple product launches so easily? Up to two weeks before everybody gathers info on other "similar" products that are expected to be innovated in some way by Apple, and Apple only releases a product with half of what you were expecting.
Some may think it's not a good example but take the iPod nano's announcement. Everybody was waiting for something as revolutionary as the first iPod and we got a tiny iPod photo but it had only half the capacity of what we were expecting.
What about the "white" iPod? Apple iPod's have been getting better and better, but accesories and some features have been disappearing one after another. First it was the remote that connected to the headphones and the Apple iPod case and now it's been the dock, the AC adapter and Firewire support. And of course Apple makes us think: Who needs a case? Who needs an AC adapter? Who needs Firewire?

Apple seems to sacrifice some things to be able to add new features and still keep the prices at the same levels. That Acer laptop seems to have some of the highest specs you can find on a laptop, so I think we should expect only as much as that for the fastest PowerBook and other "trimmed-down" and cheaper versions.
Rumors are about getting our hopes up, but come on... do you really think they'll pull off a PowerBook with so many new features by the end of this month?
I'm betting we won't see anything PowerBook until the middle of the year.
ugh. ick! I hate you people! :( Kidding, of course. But when do you think we'll see iBook? @ MWSF?

Yes, its a laptop processor, is the next processor from intel...
And you could be sure Apple will use it in the revision b of the new powerbook in september..

Don't take rumors too seriously. REMEMBER one thing. If people are saying six months for the powerbook there will be time to thin out the powerbook. If you think the one at mwsf will be that thin. GOOD LUCK!!! These new processors plus updated chips mean you need more space. I promise you that it won't geet thicker, but thinner is unlikely.

Forget about that graphics card in your typical PeeCee too..

That Acer was purposefully pumped up..

I'd STILL like to see the price of it..

An iBook + Yonah seems like an amazing combination. This isn't a low end CPU; it could be quite a good price vs. performance laptop.

gosh i hope so

be realistic too though. you wont see the price dropping lower than 800 unless you use a student discount.

'gadgets' on the sidebar.
Hehe...Microsoft is an innovator. Obviously.
Gadgets? What a horrendous thought! What a horrendous name! You seriously think?
Well, anyways, "Widgets" is a much cuter name than "Gadgets."
So anyone with Windows Vista, on the off-chance that they call it Gadgets, will be forced to hear from me:

"Widgets, widgets, widgets! I got Widgets!!! You got Gadgets! Gadgets stink!"
(over, and over, and over)

Wow, I'm being so mature today....  Ok. Seriousness.

Apple's Luvin It!

Ah... So much speculation as usual. Just go to sleep everybody and wake up when the show begins. It's gonna be GOOD!

How can the Yonah be power hungry, when Steve got up on stage and shower Intel processor vs power performance against PPC...? Maybe they were lying......

I can't recall the exact details of that chart. The rumors are that Intel has made some real breakthroughs at the 45nm process level. Yonah is made with a 65nm process. The message is that the really exciting stuff is yet to be announced.

Now you're looking directly at the problem. 70$ is about 10% of the whole thing. But you'll also need a GPU, which isn't exactly cheap; a hard drive, a display, a combo drive...then you need some people who develop the thing and some who put it together; you need some more for support and then there's marketing...this computers already are pretty darn cheap for what they do. The Intel switch helps, but not by lowering the price of the CPU.

lol! I guarantee you that the windows "gadgets" wont compare to mac's widgets. PLus keep in mind you may need a bit of extra memory running windows with all these "gadgets" THEY WILL SUCK

Well, there is a lot of room to make the 1,35" iBooks thinner, 1" thin in PowerBooks is enough for me..
The low-voltage L2300 & L2600 versions of the Yonah that will be inside of the iBook allow this..

This a bit of topic but I think the song goes like that: I say Widgets , you say Gadgets. :D It is the same thing in the end. :(
