I’m due an upgrade now on my iPhone 7. I can afford the XS / R but alarm bells are going off in my head and that little voice is telling me not to do it.

It’s about the damn cost, wasting that money on a phone, no phone is worth £1000+ but that’s just my opinion. Add to that I get the feeling Apple has turned to greed, it’s all about money and profits now.

So I have this battle going on in my head, did anyone else suffer this? I’m also on a great plan which I’ll lose if I upgrade, unlimited calls and sms, 6gb data for £21 pm
Were not far away, down here in the south of Ireland, anyway, ya agree with what you said about apple being very greedy, apple has alot of mouths to feed now, that's what happens when you get that big, the price of the new iPhones is madness, around €950 here on contract and €1350 without contract for Xs 265gb, Tim cook was asked by a TV presenter about the high prices and his response was that " we want to have an iPhone for everyone ", the best iPhone is now aimed at the well off and not the average Joe that made apple the company it is today, the iPhone 7 is a good iphone with not much change or performance from current iPhones, is there a whole lot different from a 7 to the Xs, gestures and new form factor and that's about it, won't be a difference in day to day or usability.

You make an excellent point. Why are iPhones now more expensive than ever where we are told OLED which is used throughout the industry is premium (£1k+)? Innovation has slowed throughout the entire smartphone industry with very small leaps and marketing focus on small details, yet prices are taking off. In any other industry we see the opposite.

It’s the same in semiconductors and car industry as well.

Like someone on this thread has said, it's like a new toy is out and your itching to have it but you know in your heart and soul that there won't be much of a difference really. It's like if you haven't been out for a jar in a bit, you think your missing something but when you go out, your missing nothing, lol. I think last year was the year to upgrade even though the x was expensive, because this year the Xs is the same, that's why the next iPhone is the one to get because the one after will be the same, next year the X/Xs design will be last gen like the 8 and below.

I upgraded to a iPhone Xs max from an x and an 8plus, it’s nothing like scratching an itch and getting a new toy.

It is a big difference, 6.5 inches to be exact .

Indeed and look how the car industry is struggling recently with new car sales down as much as 35%. Cars are restricted in terms of performance due to national laws so much of the attraction to consumers is purely aesthetics. I think phones have a mixture of that and a demand for new features but naturally we are at a point where the feature race is slowing down.

...Or it could be that most new cars are now very reliable, comfortable, with a lot of features for not too much money, long lasting and fuel efficient (if they're traditional cars) - so thus you don't buy a new car that often. And in that way, the smartphone is starting to resemble them.

I think it’s more to do with higher tax bands for models manufactured after April 2017 and the rise in costs on the secondhand market. Cars do indeed last longer than they used to and retain more value as manufacturers are extending periods between facelifts and introducing new models. Mobile manufacturers can’t afford to copy this route due to the constant demand to release new looking devices.

I don’t think there’s a constant demand of new looking phones outside of the tech community.

I would the opposite as those not au fait with the technology tend to judge new by the way it looks. At least in my experience as this is the differential at a basic level.

In my experience I have seen people don’t even know what’s new, difference in looks is the next step.

I can relate to that too. I know plenty of people like that who haven’t got a clue what the new iPhone is and upgrade to the most reasonably priced regardless of spec.

A colleague of mine this afternoon had an iPhone 8 on his desk with no cover or screen protector on it. I commented that he’s brave as the screens and back glass cost a fortune. He didn’t realise the back of it was glass and said ‘that’s stupid, what’s the point in that?’ He didn’t know what wireless charging was lol. He’s a 32 year old in charge of SAP implementation and has no idea about technology lol.

I have nothing more to say to a 32 years old sap professional if he didn’t know why the back is glass! Face palm ‍♂️

I can relate. I have a 5S and my parents a 6 Plus. I will definitely upgrade the 5S to an XS MAX, but I question if I should also upgrade the 6 Plus. Spending $2498 on 2 new iPhones is crazy.

Don't do it. Wait til the Galaxy S10 in January/February because that phone will blow out the Xs/Xs-Max to thy kingdom come:D

iPhone X is not meant to be affordable.

Tim Cook would disagree with you. Mainly because, it’s not necessarily affordable to purchase an iPhone out-right, but in terms of making monthly payments, it _is_affordable for a large portion of consumers (Pending one’s financials). To give you an example of that, Tim Cook actually commented himself in an article trying to justify how consumers pay for smart phones today by financing.

https://www.macrumors.com/2017/11/03/iphone-x-coffee-price-comparison/amp/

(For the record: I understand everybody does not agree with Tim Cook’s methodology, but this article link above indicates why the OP’s rationale is not in line with what Cook said.)

He has a point though - glass back for 'wireless' (the 'wireless charger has a wire!) charging seems very pointless to me when considering the risk of cracking the glass. Have we got to the stage where pushing the lightning connector in the bottom of the phone is all too much? Are we that lazy? Give me an aluminium back and a normal charger any day (the irony here is I will soon be getting an xr/xs/s9!!).

As the galaxy line has been doing since the last few years?!

It’s actually pretty bad for Samsung mobile this year and it’s getting worse by the quarter.

That’s what Samsung users said about the s9 when the iPhone X was released. Didn’t work out so well for those that waited, or the ones that waited even longer for the note 9.

The Xs/Xs max from a hardware perspective is superior to the s9/note 9, the s10 will only be playing catch and failing at that.

Honestly wonder how Samsung users will react once Samsung increases prices to match the Xs X’s max. We all know it’s going to happen. :)

I got two X’s max this year, so I know what that’s like. Perhaps wait for the xr, there aren’t many alternatives to apple ecosystem as it currently stands.

I think the phone will have top of the range specs and a new design. It will be a great phone but for those who prefer iOS/are on the Apple ecosystem it won’t matter.

yea thats why i dont like apple to UK thats blatant rip off. Even if u pull out the VAT and equLize it to usd, its still freaking expensive...

To be honest 21£\mth is high lol for 6gb i rather u ditch that and go for the newer ones if possible. I sold my 8 plus for 1100aud, having a 20gb plan with unlim call txts standard area that netts me approx 13aud (7£)/month. (59/mth over 2 years)

I literally jump android and ios like its nothing just so i dont get in the tied up debate of “ios is better than android” because trust me they copy each other so essentially the level playing field is neutralized. the phones are so damn close unless you’re video editing or some **** on them then maybe the apple will edge out...

but consumerism wise i think the differences are almost close to zero in day to day use.

I’m quite enjoying just placing my phone on a pad rather than feeling around in the dark for the cable next to my bed. It would be nice if the glass was tougher though or another material. I do have a decent case though.

If you go freely between the two of them then it’s worth waiting to see what the S10 brings. I do prefer iOS but android is fine and yes they copy each other it’s not a big deal.

Also Apple are taking advantage of Brexit. I still buy Apple devices but I don’t have to like the post brexit vote pricing.
