Well battery life for me is a lot better. Performance wise don’t notice any difference, it never performed badly anyway
Says it all. That itch for a new device will subside after a few months.

Sticking with your 7 wouldn't be the worst move, seeing as it fulfils your needs.

Either way my contract is up, so I am paying over the odds now as the phone is paid off. Probably sim only would be the way to go now.

The logic is sound.

Storage tiers
An iPhone 5 64gb cost $849 in 2012
An iPhone Xs 64gb costs $999 in 2018.

An appropriate comparison.

This is what is being argued by the other poster

Lowest Pricing tiers:
An iPhone 5 16gb cost $649 in 2012
An iPhone Xs 64gb costs $999 in 2018.

But that is not a appropriate comparaison, because pricing tiers:
2012 iPhone 5
2018 iPhone xr, iPhone X’s, iPhone max

There are 3 different pricing tiers that apple offers in 2018 vs 1 in 2012.

If he wanted to compare the lowest pricing tier:
An iPhone 5 16gb cost $649 in 2012
An iPhone Xr 64gb costs $749 in 2018

Does that explain it?
I can see the argument that the Xr is more the mainstream phone and the X series is slotting in above it as a new ultra premium flagship offering but I don’t 100% agree that makes this a perfect comparison - after all, at the time the 5 was also the latest, most advanced iPhone you were able to buy making it more comparable to the X. Of course, the X/s does gain some points back in this regard as it is made of significantly pricier components, both relatively and absolutely.

I think the overall take home is Apple used up the lead tech in general had over the iPhone so it’s now having to use really cutting edge stuff for the X and that is driving up the price.

The S9 is a really good phone and there are killer deals on it now. Samsung has come a long way. Just ignore Bixby and you're fine.

Having kind of assumed I’d buy a new phone this year, I spent a lot of time deciding whether to stick with my 6s another year or get a XS. Cost was obviously a big part of that, not least in terms of whether the money would be better put towards a new laptop. In the end I decided on the phone on the basis that my laptop will get me through another year (it’s a 2012 11” MacBook Air) and I’ll use the phone pretty much all day every day. Really for me this year’s upgrade is about having a better camera in my pocket. On that basis I’m happy with my purchase.

I use my phone more than my MacBook or iPad and because of that I upgrade it more often than ghe other two. It is my main computer even though I have other devices.

Well I upgraded to an s9. Unlimited calls text and 10gb data for £32pm and free phone. I think that’s quite decent. Same with Apple would be £70 pm
I hope you like your S9. I had an S9 plus for a few months earlier this year and it was a really nice phone.

I’m due an upgrade now on my iPhone 7. I can afford the XS / R but alarm bells are going off in my head and that little voice is telling me not to do it.

It’s about the damn cost, wasting that money on a phone, no phone is worth £1000+ but that’s just my opinion. Add to that I get the feeling Apple has turned to greed, it’s all about money and profits now.

So I have this battle going on in my head, did anyone else suffer this? I’m also on a great plan which I’ll lose if I upgrade, unlimited calls and sms, 6gb data for £21 pm

Your complaints here are becoming very common I would say. The media are picking up on it over the last couple of years and I know more and more people personally who are moving away from upgrading to the latest iPhone.

I upgraded last week and there was no way I was paying a grand for an iPhone and more than doubling my monthly bill! I know in the UK the more expensive iPhones are struggling to sell with the iPhone X being the worst seller in the entire iPhone range according to reports and price has everything to do with that. This year carriers are trying to tempt upgraders with 3 year contracts because the monthly bills are lower and maybe that will boost appeal? However that carries a knock on effect as in 2 years time when the average contract ends we’ll see more people locked in for another year.

Many of my colleagues are buying iPhone 8’s including myself and lets face it, it does exactly the same thing as an XS in principle and is nearly half the price. We don’t get cheap deals like in the US which appears to be the biggest market for the latest iPhones. We are simply seeing the consequences of a saturated market with phones lasting longer than they used to.

I completely agree.

But blame all the 1000s of android oems eating up the memory market driving up prices and not selling their handsets.

Some claim competition is good but that’s only if they can compete if they can’t they are taking up compensants and putting them in devices that they are unable to give away let alone sell.
Can you cite any examples of this?

Also Apple taking advantage of Brexit.

Doubt he can, he comes across as an Apple apologist.

If anything its well known that Apple gets first choice access to components/supply chain in the industry and everyone else shops from the leftovers apart from samsung who makes its own materials

Does that mean that only people who can afford iPhones should be able to have smartphones?

If android OEM’s can’t sell any phones should they all just give up and leave Apple to it.

It just means if they want to sell they have to undercut with pricing, which has been the strategy for a long time. Majority of consumers are still price sensitive after all.

I know he’s an Apple loyalist. I don’t even blame him. Apple does make the finest phones available. He talks about android phones like a big brother who looks down on his little brother. Saying iPhone storage costs are high due to android offering so much cheap storage is a real head scratcher, though.

Apple apologists, apple loyalists, apple fan.
Am I still on macrumors?

You guys really have a disdain for apple, it’s fans or it’s prices.

It’s surreal.

I appreciate iPhones and Apple as much as the next guy, but let’s be honest. Apple is making a huge mint off of these storage increases for no other reason than ‘because they can’. Read this article to see what the 64, 256, and 512 cards cost Apple compared to what they charge. It’s a money grab. No other way around it.

Your conscious is right.:) Find a good balance for you, regarding your needs and expenses, and see if you 're covered from your current phone. An option is the 8/8+, as it has the X's innards.

Oh dear, all the time it was all about money and profits, they just want even more now.
[doublepost=1538321286][/doublepost]I just saw you have already updated to a s9.
Good luck.

Have uou even read the article?

It plainly states price has been flat yoy.
They introduced a new memory tier at a new price point.
Are these the same analysts that claimed iPhone X sales were terrible, because of lack of demand.

To put it into perspective there is a £716 ($923) markup on the lowest storage tier iPhone XS. It costs Apple £283 ($370) per unit to manufacture. The iPhone 6 was £649 at launch. Apple seem to have upped their margins to grow profit as the smartphone market shrinks.

I love iPhones but I’m not paying these prices anymore and this is my second upgrade cycle where I’ve bought last years model to keep costs reasonable.

Edit: Got the figures wrong as it’s actually in dollars not pound sterling and is a higher markup than I thought. In the US the markup is reduced whereas the rest of the world pay a stiffer premium.

Lol so raping the customer year over year makes it better? I realize that you’ll defend Apple at all costs, but they have been making a killing on storage tiers forever. Good grief back in 2015 the storage components were a fraction of the cost today and they still charged hand over fist to the customers. Open your eyes.
