or perhaps, the logo lights up through the glass. if they go with a glass back not sure how they would embed the logo without jeopardizing the integrity of the glass structure.

They wouldn't do this. Their logo is too important to them for it to not be visible when the phone is locked/off. And if the rumors of OLED are true, then it definitely won't be lit up because there will be no backlight. Besides, Apple has already moved away from the illuminated logo in their Mac line, why would they start it in the iPhone now? In a device with even less space and much less battery capacity.

I wonder why they changed the orientation of the camera. IF (and it's a BIG IF) this is real i would buy one, touch ID under the display is a great idea.

I can think of two possible reasons, and this is just me talking out of my arse as I have no real expertise in the engineering of such things. One, most people take pictures and videos in landscape, they could want the cameras and flash aligned with that.

Or, they could want it vertical to allow more room across the top for components, thus ensuring they can get as much screen to not-screen ratio on the front.

Again, just guesses.

If Touch ID is in the screen will it still work with glass screen protectors?

Probably. My understanding is that the Touch ID sensor basically takes a picture of your fingerprint when you set it up, and then uses that to compare it to all fingerprints that touch it. Current Otterbox/Lifeproof cases cover the home button with a thin layer of transparent material (that is also capacitive), and it still works fine. So I would assume that it would still work through a screen protector just as well.

Also I could be totally wrong.

The S8 will look like a dinosaur compared to the iPhone 8.

I disagree. Still looks like a pre 2016 phone at least in this picture. Just putting a fingerprint reader into the display doesn't make it win design of the year. And to be honest that back looks bad and uneven with the camera module at the top left. The S8 back looks better; the issue there is placement of the fingerprint reader near the camera. While goofy looking the LG G6 at least looks even and no one is complaining about the fingerprint scanner location.

The leaker says that the metal band will be polished black. He expects the final design to look a lot like this render:

Personally, I like it. It is much better than placing TouchID on the back, which would be awkward. I would gladly take a design similar to the iPhone 4, but a little slimmer than the 4.

I could see TouchID under the glass on the front and a light-up Apple logo under the glass on the back. Hopefully the previous leaked designs with the cut out circle on the back just indicates a location for inductive charging.

"The front of the device appears to have an edge-to-edge screen with no discernible bezels"

How can you tell when the screen's turned off?

I second the "just talking out of my ass" here... but Apple deciding to rotate the entire camera unit just 1 year after first releasing is very interesting to me. Either they figured out that a vertical arrangement works better for depth perception/portrait mode (and somehow this didn't occur to them during the original development, which I highly doubt), or the vertical arrangement works best for some new feature, like the rumored AR features. I would bet my money on the latter.

I dig it.

Bring back the iPhone 4 with 2017 internals. That dummy looks meh..... actually I'd love a iPhone 4 in IPhone SE size, perfect.

Why go back to old designs? I don't see companies going back to old designs on computers, TV's, washing machines. cars, airplanes and so on...!! Is it really hard to figure a new design that can be equally good or even better or we have reached to the end of creativity?

Leaks before release: "Man that thing is ugly, Apple would never make anything like that!"

On release: "Not a huge fan of the design"

Couple of months post release: **Said phone appears in signature of commenter**

3-4 years post release: "That iPhone was the pinnacle of iPhone design"

It actually makes sense, it's a throwback to the past the original iPhone was great as was the 4 and 4S and IF this turns out to be true it would be combining the glass back of the 4 and 4S with original design of the original iPhone and the Apple Watch stainless steel. It's a great idea considering the iPhone will be 10 years old this year.

I've heard the power button is twice as long and could possibly be where the touch id is moved to if not under the screen.

I believe there is a phone out now that does that.

Most videos and photos I've seen show that the majority of people automatically use their phones in portrait mode for on the spur of the moment images

If this is a prototype I could see them leaving the Apple logo off on purpose so that it would be disguised.
