They need to ditch the baseline model and just sell only “pro” iPhones. They’re practically the same price already anyway.

Or maybe go the old 5c route, and put (for example) the 14pro in an aluminum shell when the 15pro comes out.

The lineup is ridiculous…. I can only buy the 14 pro (and can’t buy the 13pro or 12 pro); but I can buy the 14, 13, AND the 12? (*From Apple)

Just sell the iPhone pro. And leave the aluminum phones for last years’ tech.

It will take off where the Mac "Touch Bar" failed. I don't think this is a one-trick pony feature.

I agree but it’s interesting how many people have already compared it to the Touch Bar.

Limited to one device, no third party developer support (yet), replacing something that already existed and is of questionable value.

I can see why the comparison is being made but I also assume it will expand to the rest of the lineup next year and by then will be widely supported with third party apps.

Maybe it's a good thing if standard models are just last years pro models, without the pro cameras and maybe a few premium features like promotion.

I wouldn’t have “figured as much” but it’s a good move

That’ll main line the feature instead of alienating it. A one year upsell is also smart strategy imo.

Apple was really smart to transform an annoyance into a feature.
Now: it's clear that the Dynamic Island is much appreciated by the masses; it's also obvious that there are no proper way to make the screen without cut-outs for a while.
So Apple is putting a lot of effort into making the island a 'thing', cuz it's gonna be there for years.
I dare say that it could even be put in iPads at a certain point.

Keeping a 60hz display would not go down well in 2023. If true, not sure why 120hz or AOD should be reserved just for pro users…
Because 60Hz displays are dirt cheap and keeping 120Hz a “Pro” feature increases annual revenue dramatically by “forcing” iPhone buyers to spend at least $999 or more to get features that are standard in most 2022 smartphones, even the majority of <$999 smartphones.

Up to this point, consumers at large have not objected against Apple’s embarrassing Lighting I/O and dirt cheap displays on the mid and budget tier devices.

Why change something when consumers cope with it and still pay $799+ for a 60Hz iPhone?

If you could sell a basic loaf of bread for $8 when every other baker can only get away with $2 ones? I think not.

Obviously an unpopular opinion, but:

How are people seriously this excited about a black blank area at the top that can grow to show stuff?

It seems like every other post on MR is about this thing. It can’t be that big a deal.
Completely agree. It’s a neat trick, but gimmicky to say the least and adds very little to the experience. Definitely not worthy of being the flagship feature of a new iPhone (let alone just of the pro version).

Apple plans to expand the Dynamic Island to all four iPhone 15 models released next year, according to oft-accurate display industry analyst Ross Young. The feature is currently exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

In a tweet, Young said he expects the Dynamic Island to be available on the standard iPhone 15 models next year. However, he still does not expect the standard iPhone 15 models to be equipped with an LTPO display, suggesting that the devices will continue to lack ProMotion support and an always-on display option like Pro models have.

Dynamic Island is a pill-shaped area surrounding the Face ID sensors and front camera on the iPhone 14 Pro models. The feature can display system alerts for things like incoming phone calls and the Face ID authentication prompt, and it will also work with Live Activities in third-party apps when iOS 16.1 is released later this year.

In the past, Young accurately revealed that iPhone 13 Pro models and the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro would feature ProMotion, that the sixth-generation iPad mini would be equipped with an 8.3-inch display, that the latest MacBook Air would have a slightly larger 13.6-inch display, and much more, giving him a very successful track record.

Yea please no. Please 🙏 no.

Gruber said it was going to be an exclusive Pro model feature for years. 😂

It will be a massive differentiator between androids and iPhones: most androids will go full, uninterrupted screen with under display front facing camera and biometrics.
Sadly we wouldn’t get under screen cameras and biometrics till the iPhone 20……

They can’t use aluminum because it would make the mag safe charging in usable. But we could only hope.

Shouldn't the DI be gone in iPhone 15 or 16 pro models? Is Apple content on keeping the pill for the future? They should be exploring under-display technology. Yes, it's not there yet (based on Samsung models), but Samsung should be able to make it look much better sooner than later, and Apple should explore as well.

we've reached the point of finishing returns now that cameras are all basically really good and the CPU is fast enough. Might be the first time I wait 3 years to upgrade a phone.

Just traded my wife's 4-year-old Xr in after having it since it was launched, same battery and still worked great for her. She a 14 pro, pretty nice improvement, lol. I'm on the fence with my 12, only reason I may trade in is for a bigger screen.

I’ve been saying since Dynamic Island was released that it could well be the 2nd coming of the Touch Bar if its availability isn’t extended to as many devices as possible. Nobody is going to spend time and money developing a feature that is only access on a couple of models of a device. Now it’s getting interesting.

Is it just me, or am I the only one who hasn’t used their island yet? I was so excited for this feature, but didn’t realize how little I use the apps that utilize said island. Just like the touch bar on my MacBook.

Ross Young mentioned that in his tweet. It has to do with tight supplies of 120hz LTPO displays.

Why do you think that Apple is not already exploring under screen sensors and camera? We have had several reports showing that they are but, as you pointed out, the tech isn’t there yet. They won’t do it until the photo quality and FaceID security are both as good as current systems. Apple does their testing in the lab and doesn’t bring out the features until they have it working to their standards.

Even when Apple can put those components under the screen, I suspect that they will retain a software version of the DI because it brings a lot of useful functionality to the phone. A software version could be more dynamic with more size variants and would not always need to be present.
