Dynamic Island: First Look at iPhone 14 Pro's New Pill-Shaped Cutout

So I like the animation this black bar does. But do we get the numbers for the battery indicator and also looking at a video play on the 14 pro I’m finding that bar more annoying and in the way.

Looking back on the last couple hours — this was the only really great feature(satellite connectivity would be the other, if they didn't charge you for something that's supposed to save your life). But man an I excited about this!!!

In terms of daily usage yes these are all marketing features for most people. If you need these features they're huge, but for most people it's the same as last year's phone which was the same as the year before's.

I'll stick to my 11 Pro Max which is heating heavily on iOS 16 - it will warm the house and my wallet will not be another source of cold.

I don't really see the Dynamic Island as a "Pro" feature… too bad Apple didn't bring that tech down to the 14, would have offset sticking with the same (pretty much, +1 GPU core) A15 CPU. IMHO, the Dynamic Island is much more a "generational-upgrade" than anything else the 14 shipped with, just far superior to the Notch. (Though I'd still liked to have seen pixels in between, so the camera could have been "ringed" with an "active" notification.)

Also, don't get why they persist on showing the Notch/Dynamic Island while shooting photo/video in landscape mode… why not move the touch controls to the display area there, colored-over-black background, which would serve to disappear the notch/Island entirely and provide for more area to grab onto the stupid thing while shooting (to keep my thumb out of the way of the sensors)?

Why not a dynamic notch? It's not like the tiny strip of display above the island is romotely useful and it makes it stand out more? I dunno. Maybe you need to see and compare them both side to side. But surely they could have given the non-pro a dynamic notch since it doesn't have the 'island'?

This reminds me of the Apple of old, such a well thought through design and user experience.....really like this, great job. I feel it's been a long time since I have seen something from Apple that really stood out. The team that designed this needs a bonus!

I would wait for the reviews at least. Apple is a master of presentation. Delivery falls short often. Remember Steve Jobs launching the Mac 2 with the false sound gimmick.

Shame they didn't make an iPhone 14 mini. This would have been the perfect way to reclaim some of that screen space on a reasonably-sized device.

How so? The pill goes lower than the notch.

Clever and potentially useful design. I can’t help but think it’d be better if it was implemented as a notch at the edge of the screen so it blends into the bezel. Especially when you’re looking at something in full screen, the pill seems to stand out much more visually.

Are we still not over this yet? It's quite obvious that a mini is only for a minority of loud voices. These loud voices keep saying Apple would sell millions and yet they released an update and now had to abandon it due to lack of sales volume.
