im feeling iffy about this update imminent thing...lately, before an apple product is released the following things would happen:
1. 9to5mac.com would say that their secret spy inside cupertino had spotted a prototype of the new device and would then disclose some of the new device's features, vaguely, but distinguishably..
2. other rumor sites would then begin to talk out loud
3. other distinguishing features would be revealed slowly
4. mockup wars
5. maybe a spy shot...

...and on the macbook pro front..everythings been dead quiet...seems like all the hype's being built completely, by ourselves..simply by our expectation that MBP must jump on the penryn bandwagon

I think the overriding fact pushing everyone to believe MBP updates must be coming any day now is that it has now been the longest period between updates since the MBP first came out. The last update was nearly 9 months ago. In fact, in a few weeks it will be the longest period between updates even if you go back further and include the PowerBooks. Since the switch to Intel everyone expects quicker updates than we ever had with PPC chips, so having a longer period between updates than we ever saw with PPC would be really surprising, and disappointing.

Yeah, and there's a new CPU out for them to start using (not to mention better GPUs). Plus the dwindling stock, plus the report of a new model being connected to the net, etc.

From the time period leading up to the Jan. 15th keynote at MWSF, right up to the present moment, we have yet to have any truly reliable predictions in any of these forums. This includes the ongoing "MBP supply drying up...", as you can still get all the current MBP's you want.

The urgency for new ones, and the "paying top dollar for old technology" arguments are also in question. The current MBP's (I do not own one by the way) are spectacular laptops, and they provide everything 99.9% of users realistically require, and then some. The only laptop that most of us would rather have is the next MBP; there is nothing available today that would be more desirable to the majority of (Mac) users. It is our enthusiasm for Apple products that leaves us panting for the next best thing, not any sort of real obsolescence of the current models.

I'm the first to admit being guilty of always wanting the latest, greatest, top of the line... But I have long since ceased to try to justify that desire with nonsense about "need". I buy it because I like it and because I can. How many MBP users, including those currently clamoring for the new one, could have their computing needs met more than adequately with a current MacBook? With due respect to those who really push their MBP's to the limit, relatively speaking I suspect there are very few.

As to the rest of us, we should keep in mind that much of the fun is in the wanting and the speculating about what may be. Once the product is actually in hand, that all disappears. It's kind of like wishing your kids would grow up only to find yourself wishing that they were little kids again.

Let's keep it in perspective and enjoy the process. At the end of the day it's mostly (but not entirely) "much ado about nothing".

So whadaya think, maybe this Tuesday?

dwindling stock? Are you sure? That seems akin to the 'event on the 26th' rumour which was all the way around the world before the truth had its boots on; doesn't look like that's happening.

Best buy stocks dwindled and then ... were replenished, perhaps they heard the same rumours and stopped buying, until they realised they were just low on stock. The stores in Singapore, Australia and other places have been 24 hours for a macbook pro, 2-3 days for a custom job ALL the way through the whole rumour cycle. I got the impression that Amazon has remained fully stocked.

I want it too, I won't buy an outdated MBP at the same price as 8 months ago, I'll wait, but I don't see the evidence that stocks are dwindling.

Perhaps that's the reason for the delay. There are a lot of MPBs in the pipeline and sales have dropped because everyone expects the next one out and sales are slowing. Would be interesting to know what week of manufacture people are getting on their recent purchases.

Which to me has never been an argument. You can say the same thing about an early G4 Powerbook too...

No, just going by the MacRumors news.

Yeah, although they did FINALLY start offering discounts on the MBP, which theoretically might be to try to move stock, as they haven't in ages.

I suppose this is my frustration! I know Apple and Steve Jobs like to remain secretive in dealing with future releases, BUT, would it be so hard to allow your customer service reps to tell you not for at least 2 more months when directly asking them? I have said this before in this very thread that I'm giving it till this coming Tuesday and I'm buying the current model, then hope and pray that the new MBP is released within the next 14 days after that! But this rumor has become so prevalent it's almost impossible to brush it aside and not treat it like fact and surely Apple is noticing it. If it's effecting their sales, which nobody has any proof of, one would think it would be in Apple's interest to answer questions if asked about it.

If I end up buying the current model on Tuesday, which seems increasingly likely, I'm hoping that the upgrade is limited to a processor boost. This of course is pure selfishness on my part, allowing me to be comfortable with my upcoming purchase of the current model! However, with the Montevina chipset recently announced, my bet is Apple will do a complete refresh around this rather than the Penryn. This will also allow the Air to shine in the spotlight for a few more months.

Screw me

You know, I can't take it any more. When the new s*&t arrives, it will be on the Apple website heretofore known as "Apple.com".

Montevina is NOT a chipset, it is a platform; big difference!

It's happening

I don't know what more I could do to prove what I've heard from a legitimate source by actually naming them, which I won't be doing. Like I said, I'm patiently waiting myself, so here's hoping. The exact words which were spoken to me 2 weeks ago were 'They won't be this week or next week... if they come in February at all it will be the last week in February'. This came from someone inside Apple who would know. You do what you want with that.

I was in the market for a mbp and contacted a highly placed friend at apple for an insider discount purchase. They advised me to 'wait till the end of the month' meaning February as the mbp's would be 'a tiny bit faster' and that's all they said other than no price difference, at least on the 15". I went ahead and bought a refurb at a great price because I don't give a damn about all this 'keeping up with the Jobs' nonsense and I need a computer sooner rather than later. But seeing as how there's so much speculation going on out there I thought I'd pass on my very very insider nod. Again, 'wait till the end of the month.' But then again, the Wizard can change his mind. I don't much care. Anyway, good luck.

You've given me a little glimmer of hope... I've been disappointed week after week since MWSF, and this bit of info has just given me the oomph I needed to hold the reins back on my credit card and wait out the next week. I hope your friend knows what he/she's talking about and isn't just speculating like the rest of us, but anything to keep me from having that "I should be enjoying this more, but I can't get the taste of being screwed over out of my mouth" feeling...

i'll wait until the updated mbp is released, just to get a better Buc to Specs ratio !

Hope they come this month, with more mem, cpu,Gpu and 300gb (basic mbp.)

My friend is placed high enough that I can pretty much assure you it is going to happen either the last week in february or first week in March. But remember, Mr. Jobs runs the ship and he makes all final decisions ALONE inside a windowless room. I'm not a gambling person which means I wouldn't put money on it. If I was a gambling person, I would. Yes... bad taste... sort of takes the fun out of the whole thing doesn't it? Remember, there'll always be another upgrade and you'll always feel one step behind. That's life. They're the 'New Car in the Next Door Driveway' of the modern age. Never wanted to play that game, still don't. Cheers.

Wow! I wish I had a friend that was high placed in Apple.
Oh, wait... I do! I just invented him. Cool!

All sarcasm aside, she may very well have such a friend within Apple. Granted, I'm only choosing to believe that so I don't spend the entire weekend in a rotten mood over this "imminent" update, but it could very well be true. In a world full of negatives, I'm choosing to go with the positive news and hold on to a little bit of hope. It may be naive of me but I'll give people the benefit of a doubt and trust that they have no reason to be making this up...

My source concurs ....

Yes, my highly-placed source confirms that the MBPs will not be released last week, nor the week before that.

He/she will be providing me with information in the very near future, which I believe to be very accurate, regarding whether there will be a Tuesday 2/26 MBP release. I'll update the group next Wednesday on what I am able to learn.

Ditto. Your news has given me hope for this upcoming Tuesday. I PRAY your friend's right! :)

Personally, I'm a glutton for punishment, so I'm going to believe. I'm going to check online first thing Tuesday morning and if the new MBP isn't there I'll go into a shame spiral for a few days before I start building up hope again for the following Tuesday.
