"More scratch resistant" sounds promising. Don't care about shatter resistance. The X and XS were particularly scratch-prone, but the 11 Pro has been better in my experience.
After a year of no scratches on the 11 Pro, I put it in my pocket and it came out with deep gouges on it. From an empty pocket. No idea how it happened.

This is exciting. I haven't used a screen protector on my iPhone SE and in the intervening 3.5 years it's gained a lot of scratches. If I can manage to have a phone without a protector and have it hold up to scratching that'd be amazing.

To me, ‘drop tests’ really doesn’t prove anything. Because there’s so many variables when you actually drop a phone, like the surface type the phone lands on, the angle in which the phone lands, from what height, etc. Just because we see a ‘YouTube test’ of a drop, really isn’t indicative of everybody else’s experience how they drop their phone and if it was used in a case or not.

Yes they do prove something when different phone models are tested using the same parameters.

They don't prove that much if they just test one of each phone. A sample size of one doesn't make for the most representative sample. All you've determined is that one specific phone broke earlier than the other, it doesn't prove that it will hold true for the rest of the phones in each of their respective production runs. Obviously testing more than one phone gets expensive fast though.

edit: many typos

I'm super scratch averse. When I sell my XS Max, it will be in mint condition without a scratch on it. I'll still put a glass screen protector on my 12 Pro Max, but I am considering going either caseless or with a bumper style case.

that's all great news. i used an iphone 11 pro without a screen protector the entire last year and don't have a single scratch on the front glass... i just got my 12 pro so that give me further confidence that i'll never use a secret protector again.

I want user replaceable plastic. I'm so done with glass. I want to throw it against the wall and have it survive like a nokia. $450 to replace the back glass is just ludicrous.
I'm sorry you have a tendency to abuse your electronics that way.

But I do agree with replaceable parts. That's what I liked about the iPhone 4, you could unscrew the back and replace it if you had to. The 4S moved to replaceable front screens, but it would be great if both were replaceable.

Like with this test here, I'm assuming drop tests are also designed with some consistency in mind (e.g. height, surface, angle). Or were you saying that even when they do do that, there are still too many unaccounted for variables?

why they didn't include ceramic shield on the iPad, there is so much screen there to be scratched

This is great news! My work badge belt clip took a nice gouge out of my Xr screen the second week I had it because I forgot I had put them both in the same pocket. It seemed a lot softer than my iPhone 6 screen, which was still pristine after 3 years.

Seems to me, which goes completely against what I'm used to, that you're better off laying your device face down than face up to avoid scratches.
