I would really like it if they put this on the back and not just the front. I've broken the back glass twice and the front glass never, and it's significantly more expensive to replace.

Curious if that would be a case of “buttered bread always lands on the side with butter making a mess”.

Is that case-less? I understand not wanting to cover such a nice device but at least for me the iPhone X grip is dubious and the very very few times I have dropped it with a case felt like it would have definitely hurt badly without one. For what is worth, the apple leather cases while expensive are so well done, great grip, touch feeling, etc. I only ever buy one for the life of use of the phone. Still on iPhone X currently.

So it's 10% more scratch resistant.
First of all, I would come up with 25% (442/352).
Second, no it doesn't work like that.

And if you were referring to the Mohs scale, it doesn't work like that either.

This is really welcome news, the scratch resistance on the 11 is a real sore point, this sounds much much better.

Like with this test here, I'm assuming drop tests are also designed with some consistency in mind (e.g. height, surface, angle). Or were you saying that even when they do do that, there are still too many unaccounted for variables?
You also have to guess which is the worst angle for it to land, and repeating the test will possibly do cumulative damage so you can't just drop one phone over and over.

My screen protectors haven’t arrived yet so I’ve been using this 12 Pro without one. I must say I am impressed that the screen feels cool and smooth. My 11 Pro and my XS Max had glass that felt kind of sticky. I couldn’t wait to get a screen protector on them.

I believe it's the stock one that is basically a plastic sticker.
Just realized the iP12 in the thumbnail appears to have a screen protector on it while the iPhone in the video does not.

I'm not trying imply that there's something suspicious going on; it just seemed like an odd detail.

I don't know about the iP12, but the Pro doesn't have a clear sticker protecting the screen in the box, it's a white sheet that isn't adhesive (as far as I could tell), it's just held on by natural attraction and a prayer.

Yeah I’d still go for a screen protector. I tend to use my phones for over 2 years and I’m sure with it being mixed in my pocket with change and keys at times it would eventually leave micro scratches. When I resell my phones they’re almost always pristine as I case and screen protect right after unboxing.

doesn't the screen protector hinders the experience of the touch screen?

Very happy to hear about improved scratch resistance. It’s extremely rare for me to drop my phone and in all these years I have yet to break a screen or glass back (knock on wood) so I’ve always valued scratch resistance more than shatter resistance. I do feel that the last few years they’ve become a little more scratch prone so if their findings hold true then that would be much appreciated.

I have the same issue with keys and scratches. I do it not really because of resale value though. Whenever a protector gets too scratched I can just slap on a new one and get an unblemished screen again. There’s also the added benefit of the protector absorbing most of the impact when my iPhone lands on a hard surface.
Yeah but then you have to use the phone with a screen protector. That's an inherent downside. That added thickness makes interaction with the device feel less natural and hindered. Not to much the clarity of the cheap screen protector. Or getting dust trapped under it that you can wipe away. Too much of a downside. Use the phone as it was meant to be used. If it didn't hold up to normal use people wouldn't buy them.

It’s usually from little bits of sand that get in there.
I guess, I was power washing concrete that day wearing mesh shorts so, I guess i can imagine micro particles of concrete having been blasted through the shorts if I really want to speculate.

Guess I'll leave my phone inside when power washing from now on.

I've seen people's phones with screen protectors and I wouldn't be able to use them. It would drive me nuts. Lots of people just don't notice once it is on there and they get used to it, so...

I don’t feel this was a far test on the iPhone 12 aluminium sides, testing the scratch resistance with it being a silver model. I’m pretty sure it it was another colour it would have scratched much easier.

They should be using sapphire crystal by now on the front and rear - almost as hard as diamonds. It would be interesting to see if the latest iteration of gorilla glass is better than this. Apparently the glass screen on these is thinner which is probably not a good thing. Needless to say I was use a glass front and rear protector for every iPhone (preferably Apple's version), however my current iPhone 11 Pro Max has a silicon one as Apple at the time was not doing the in-store protectors (Belking Invisiglass). Better to be safe than sorry.

I hope so! I'm really careful with my iPhone 11 pro, always have it in its own pocket, never put anything on top or put it face down yet its got a few scratches on it. I wish Apple would have addressed this.

I'll bite... how?

(side note... the "experience"? gods, the Entitled...)

What do you mean how? if you stick a piece of plastic cover on your screen surely the scrolling and tapping function will get effected.

I don't use plastic screen protectors any longer, I use glass ones from decent manufacturers. Not that even the plastic ones were bad, depending on who made them.

The only real downside that I can perceive is the slight thickness/rigidity increase and that the border on the edge of the screen, which are pretty much going to be non-issues now that 3D Touch is gone and the 12 is flat-sided. I haven't noticed any clarity issues and I've never had dust doing under the protector. Even the really cheap glass protectors seal against the display really well in my experience.

Good. My 11 Pro Max was scratch to oblivion. Not sure how. I've used iPhones the same ways over the years but the 11 just scratched so easily.
