Battery Life

I just want to verify this, if anyone happens to know the answer. Will there be any difference in battery life if you have 1 app that supports push notifications, versus 20?

....uh, so? These apps are lame. No free IM apps using push?? gimme a break - that's about the only useful thing about it. Is mobile me email even push now? ok, that's nice... but really, look at these other apps - unless you have a VERY specific need for something like "ismysiteup", then really, so what?

I just don't understand why this is such a big deal.

You don't need MobileMe. The other person posted IM+ as a mistake. On 2.0, you'd need MobileMe or any other email service that pushes in order to get notifications. With 3.0, you don't need anything.

You need NOTHING special. You will get push notifications if you:

Are running 3.0
Are running an app that supports it
Have push notifcations turned on

You don't need mobile me, or a server or anything.

No you don't have to have a mobile me account for this to work. The developers have to use the apple push servers in order to send you the messages, the subscribers do not have to pay additional for this.

I find it funny that your blackberry could do everything. I never saw any games on it like the ones I see on the iphone. Nor any real browser for that matter.

Guys,

OK, lets face it apple has been abit slow, but saying that my blackberry was solely used for email.

Now i've got the software i'm kinda hoping to enjoy getting my emails without fetch and continue my games.

Next app i reckon that needs the push immediately is Facebook!

Am I the only person really excited/anxious for someone to develop/release an app that keeps track of where speed traps and cops sit on highways and then sends me push notifications when my GPS (in the iPhone) says I'm getting close to one of those points. The points could be verified by multiple people "tagging" the location as a speed trap or a hot spot. I think this has HUGE potential, anyone else with me?

Someone want to develop it with me? I've never developed for iPhone, but would be 100% game to collab on this if someone wants to help.

If I had any skills that were beneficial to developing applications, I'd jump right on board.

Problem is, I don't. But I'd be the first person to purchase this app.

Have you seen any of the demo's??? Do you pay extra a month for text messages, this could eventually lead to the death of carriers charging you for data + text. Don't be so naive.

Am I the only one worried about an app abusing this? for like popup ads and such.
As has already been said, you can always turn it off or uninstall the app.

That said, I'm not that excited about this. There is very little data I want pushed to me, outside of what I could already get in a SMS text message. Maybe weather or civil alerts/emergencies, but that's about all (and I already do get some civil alerts via text).

Being on IM all the time is not something I care to do.

A major new update for Palringo has been submitted, with push notifications planned to be out ASAP :)

Stay tuned...

Mobile me has been push since 2.0.

There's something like this, Trapster is like this.

I'm not sure I follow you on the email portion. You want it to pop up a window with your email message while your playing a game?

Push email has been supported in yahoo since 1.something, and in exchange and mobile me since 2.0.

I agree about facebook, needs updates. Twitter apps too.

I know IM+ says it has push notifications...but I'm not getting the feature and settings for it...

that article talks about 3.0 which was released yesterday. It does not have push notification using the apple push servers, it push's an email to you when you get a message.

No, you could have 100 apps and it would make no difference!

Or you could try obeying the law and driving within the speed limit?

Immediate financial win for you due to the lack of fines and less chance of injury or death caused by your driving.

Seems simpler than developing a push enabled iphone app.

Honestly, I was excited for push notifications, but it seems like no one was ready to support it on day one. That just means it's a lot harder for developers to use that one would like to believe.

I think it's Apple that is slowly approving the apps because this is the first real test of such a large number of users and apps...

They have got to get it right with these apps before they can approve Skype, Facebook, Twitter apps etc...

Meebo IM was demonstrated at the March Keynote. It's done.

I imagine it depends on the # of notifications these apps generate. If your phone is being pushed a notification every 3 minutes, I would think it would chew up a lot more battery than a bunch of apps that may send maybe 1-5 notifications apiece a day.

You have apparently not heard about an app called Trapster. It does exactly that, and is a very established site. While it is not live up to the moment, it shows you common hideouts as opposed to live ones, and then warns you when you get close with a blip on the map and an audible alert.

Speed limits are far too low for me to ever consider going anywhere close to them. Once speed limits hit 90 on the interstate and 70-80 elsewhere, i won't be following.. ever.

Hey Guys! Thanks for the shout out for Are My Sites Up!

Just to be clear, the app itself is totally free, but the version with the Push notifications (v2.5) is for premium subscribers of the service only. AND, it appears there was a little bug with them and not all users are getting Push messages properly, but the fix has already been submitted for approval.

Cheers!

I hadn't discovered this app, but I've just downloaded it, and signed up. I only have a few domains to check, but if it works well, I'll at least subscribe to the $25 service just by way of appreciation.
