Dual camera on the smaller iphone 7 is the only way I forgive the removal of the headphone jack.

I find it no problem that I may be forced to select a higher quality external DAC to use with my headphones, it's just that since this hasn't been the norm for so many years it's hard to break the old habit and accept that with selecting a new DAC, I also have to pay separately for a new DAC. I hope for most, who regard the DAC in the phone acceptable and even for my own convenience, that Apple ships an adaptor/DAC with the new phone (assuming that also the earpods would have a lightning connector and internal DAC and not be 3.5mm requiring the adaptor themselves). This way, you could have your "cheapie" earpods and then pretty much leave the adaptor connected to a preferred set of headphones.

If future iPhones remove the 3.5" jack, then I have no reason to buy any of them.

What will you use when Android phones drop the 3.5mm Jack too?

no headphone jack, no iPhone for me, ... I want to use my compression artifact free, and just working, also in an airplane mode, studio monitor headphones and I also want to share my other in-ears with microphone with other phones, etc.

So you must have a 128GB iPhone now, and all of your music is in lossless file formats? Why would the elimination of a headphone jack prevent you from using headphones in airplane mode? Lightning headphones or an adapter wouldn't be affected at all, and I use my Wireless headphones in airplane mode all the time, with BT on. I also share my BT headphones with other people's phones, by simply and easily pairing it with their device. A simple an inexpensive adapter also allows any headphones to be used with the Lightning port, as well as Lightning headphones with 3.5mm jacks.

Don't really see a problem here.

So it's going to retain its resemblance to the 6/S?
That is including the much flawed placement of Power button opposite to the volume button?!
Wow, I sincerely hope it's not true.

Edit - For me it's mildly infuriating, but at least I would have hoped for it to be addressed in the next 'tick' cycle.
It's not just you. It's a poor design. You have to grip it to be able to squeeze the power button, and end up pressing in on the volume buttons too which doesn't end up locking the phone. I do it every day, constantly. Squeeze...squeeze...SQUEEZE JUST PRESS THE STUPID POWER BUTTON!

I'm sure that the consensus here will be "Hmm, I don't have that problem, it must be you therefore there is no problem and you're making it up", but you're not alone, trust me.

What's the issue with the placement of the power button?
Apple's PR department is trying to build hype quite desperately.
They are doing very well, aren't they?

I will crowdfund an own phone then ;-)

I indeed had a 128GB iPhone 6, but I got tired of paying Apple's flash premium and only got a 64GB iPhone 6S. Especially as they started to overcharge European customers even more by increasing the prices.

And there is a difference in most crappy SBC compression and even MP3. Besides IIRC all my iTunes downloads are AAC, ... So this is comparing a Ford with a Porsche, ...
Btw. Mac OS X at times even needs hacking for SBC not to sound totally awful, ...

When you think I buy a lighting headphone just for the latest Apple product you are wrong. I can neither use it on my MacBook Pro then, nor any other regular device. Like a TV or a Revox B77 or wherever.

And when I forget it or loose it I have no easy replacement at hand while traveling?

I do not understand why some people desperately seek to make their life more complicated which each new iDevice, ...

Time to invest in some bluetooth headphones then ;)

I'm an audiophile...
You'll NEVER catch me on bt phones; however, I plan on taking my included lightning/3.5 adapter, placing it on the end of my Sennheiser Momentum on-ears (my current "iPhone cans"), & forgetting all about it whilst enjoying my music and my life!!!
Unsure why others are choosing misery and anger and boycotting, etc instead...

I can't see there being stereo speakers at the base of the phone. Unless someone can explain what their purpose would be?

The fact that it's posted here means MANY take it as fact. Look at how people get upset every time over RUMORS. They forget what the word RUMOR means and believe it to be fact.

You may be able to separate hearsay and guesses from fact, but the vast majority here show they have no capacity to do so.

vast majority? i don't see it. comments and reactions to rumors shouldn't have to always be prefaced with 'well, i know this is a rumor but...." people just react, mostly with the understanding that a hypothetical 'X or Y would mean Z to me.' seems silly to jump into the thread and deride people as a precursor.

If we're getting stereo sound, why not put the other speaker on the top of the phone, so when you watch a video you'll have stereo sound. Two speakers on the bottom of the phone would be too close together to matter, and people typically watch media in landscape mode anyway. Then the 3.5mm jack could remain as well.

My air 2 has stereo speakers and even those are too close together to make a decent stereo experience. Top and bottom setup would be much better.

You won't be forced to do anything, but rather have the choice to upgrade to a higher quality audio solution than you currently have. You can certainly chose to go with the same quality, or less than Apple is currently using, but it will be an improvement in some cases as its paired to the audio device you're using it with. You may have to pay for an external DAC, but Apple will be giving you better and more features without charging you any more than the previous phone.

Apple will almost assuredly not ship an adapter in the box, as its not in their best interest, or that of promoting the future of consumer audio -- wireless. Cheap 3.5mm technology is holding back demand for wireless audio. With greater demand comes innovation, quality improvements and price drops, all of which benefits the consumer. And it would also deter customers from trying Lightning. Apple will ship a free pair of Lightning EarPods, as they always have, which will be natively compatible with all future Apple products. Apple, might included a lightning to 3.5mm adapter to use the Lightning earbuds with older 3.5mm equipped Apple products but I doubt it.

There will still be a cheaper internal DAC because it doesn't have to provide the same quality for tiny internal speakers and mics, but it is unlikely Apple will pass through an analogue signal through Lightning (even though it's capable of it). But it's almost a guarantee you'll have to buy an inexpensive adapter that converts a regular 3.5mm set of headphones to Lightning, as well as one that converts Lightning headphones to 3.5mm jack.

Apple might surprise us, and we'll find some kind of innovative new set of free earbuds with both a Lightning and flip-out 3.5mm Jack. Well one can hope. But definitely no all-purpose adapter for older audio equipment.

"Unapologetically beautiful functionless audio quality...crystal clear...revolutionary....hole....less

S***. Where was I?"
[doublepost=1457537162][/doublepost]
If Ive uses the term "revolutionize" for removing the 3.5mm audio pin, I'm going to vomit.

I'm sure there will be plenty of apple apologists to spin it somehow as a positive.

You know, sony makes a phone at under 5 inches in size with a 3.5mm headphone jack and two front facing speakers (one up top and one below). It's the Z5C.

Why does apple feel the need to spit in the face of its customers?

First, this is still a rumor. Second why would anyone's first reaction be that Apple is intentionally trying to screw its customers? And third, who knew Sony was still in the phone business? Which leads to my follow up question, does this Sony phone have identical features and performance to the iPhone 6S? If not, then the comparison is pointless ... As is stereo speakers for that matter.

I will be the first to castigate Apple if they remove the 3.5mm Jack only to free up space to include a second speaker.

I agree. I don't get it either. I'm not all that fussed about the lack of a headphone jack. I just use Apple headphones anyway. Only problem is, what if I want to listen to music AND charge my phone?

Pass through connector. It's technology that's been around since electricity was invented.

If I only have one connector for powering the device and using my headphones, I hope apple has a solution for me to do both at the same time. Preferably without using yet another plug/adapter/something that I can only by from apple at exorbitant prices.

Use case: listening to a podcast in bed while dozing off to sleep and hoping to find a fully charged phone in the morning (you need to feed those things every day)

I seriously doubt this case means anything. We are 6 months away from the keynote.

Maybe Apple will increase the quality of sound? And at the same time increase Apple Music sound quality, this would be a good reason to remove the headphone jack.
