I'm ordering an iPhone 4 the August 22nd (when my old Verizon contract expires). I'm extremely tempted to try this out and have a few quick questions/concerns...

1) What are the odds of this lasting long enough that I can try it out... Any rumors one way or the other how long this loop hole will exist? I realize it's impossible to have any certainty. I'm hoping I'd get the phone in timely manner, I have heard that AT&T has been shipping them pretty quickly.

2) Has anyone experienced any charges to their bill from doing this? Like do they charge an activation fee for temporarily switching phones over the phone?

3) Has anyone whose done this experienced a tech support person who suspected what you were up too? Or do they just treat it as mundane business as usual requests.

Thanks in advance!

1- Sorry I don't know. People have reported that it currently still works.

2- I had 2 $18.00 upgrade fees, but I think they were from when I first activated my phone. See my post above. Other than that, no extra charges.

3-More likely you will get a customer service rep that doesn't know where to find the correct dumbphone plan so they tell you it doesn't exist.

The only time you have to talk to a rep is when switching from your iphone back to the dumbphone. In my case I told them I was frustrated with the antenna/reception issues and wanted to go back to my old phone. They seemed to buy that ;)

hope that helps

I had this at first but after a few minutes he found it.

I think I am at the stage where I am waiting for them to realize I used my iPhone 4 and need a data plan. I can call but have no data service.

A couple of people have had questions about your first bill after doing this method, so here are some pics that may help.

You can see the prorated charges from my first 200mb iphone plan - 07/02-07/20

The unlimited plan kicked in on 7/20. I have NO charges from the time I was back on the dumbphone. But I got the texts in about 3 hours. If it takes more than a day I suspect you would see prorated charges for that day.

Oh and ignore the text charges. I don't have a texting plan and got spam texts

Still waiting... I have no data on my iPhone and I have that dumb phone plan according to att.com, but after like 16 hours still no texts from AT&T. Time to give them a call I guess.

If you can stand it....hang in there. It took as long as a day or two for a couple of people in this thread.

Okay I will, because I just called them twice to no avail. Both insisted I could not bring the unlimited over to my iPhone.

and keep making calls with your iphone

at first call, on 8/20, my data plan was changed to $15 unlimited data plan. 2nd call, I required to change my plan to $30 unlimited data and text package.

Now, I am yet getting any text from ATT. I'm still waiting for changing to 3G unlimited data. It has been 2 days. Should I call rep?

don't worry guys, it has to work... i was about to give up that 3rd night, but i fell asleep from boredom and sadness over this issue... and guess what, at 9am the next day, i finally received it... keep using your iphone... so there it is, 3.5 days for me... or actually almost 4 days... (i also changed from the $15 unlimited without texting package to the $30 with texting, and the countdown really started from that moment i called in to change to the appropriate plan)

Hope you get your phone quickly. I ordered mine back in the end of July and was told it would be a minute. A few days later I walked into best buy and walked out with an iPhone. Then called apple to cancel the order. Then did this. You shouldn't worry to much. You'll be fine

Yes, and thanks. I got my unlimited plan this morning :D

When I called in the first time, I think the rep knew exactly I was planning to do because I'm sure he heard it in my voice and also I kept insisting and arguing with him that there IS such thing as a microSIM adapter...Plus, he kept denying there was such thing as a $30 unlimited dumbphone plan... The only thing he'd offer me was the $15 without the texting... I gave in and accepted that $15 dollar plan.
I called in the 2nd time and this woman would still not offer the $30 dumbphone plan...
called in the 3rd time and I talked to someone much more lenient who said the $30 unlimited dumbphone plan is definitely still existent...
so if your rep would only give you the $15 unlimited dumbphone plan, then go ahead and accept that plan if he/she's too hard of a shell... call in again and say they added the wrong plan...

tell us how it goes when you receive ze iphone...

I just did the switch and lost all data access on my iphone. Is this normal? It says "Could not activate celluarl data network. You are not subscribed to a celluar data service" I see that I have the unlimited Data/Text/Email on my account

I would like to try this. I don't yet have a smartphone, just a dumbphone with AT&T. Two questions for anybody who knows: (1) Can this also be done with a Samsung Captivate? (2) What would be the reason, if asked by the AT&T rep, for calling them to activate the dumbphone, rather than just popping your SIM card into the dumbphone to activate it?

I'm going on day 3 now and still no text (and no data either :() Anyone have any recent updates to give me hope?

Just went through it after I saw the netflix app... My karma feels bruised atm... But called up and first call the lady put me on unlimited messaging and data but separate features... so was costing me 35 bucks... I read some more of the posts here and learned of the message and data in one package and it costs 30$. So I call back and tell the lady it was my mistake and I am cheap so can I switch to the 30 feature and she said maybe and took a while on the phone but got it done. Turned off my iphone right after the call. Logged into OLAM to make sure she had it right. About 15 minutes later turned on my iPhone and had two text messages... First about the eligible data plan is required then second the we added an appropriate plan... Then I go to OLAM and it has me on the 30$ a month unlimited iPhone feature and unlimited messaging. So unless they catch their error later in billing then I have unlimited now too.

What steps did you do exactly?

Can you post a picture of your OLAM to make sure you have the right plan.

I am gong to AT&T today to purchase a backup phone (so I don't drop/lose my iPhone after a 20 beer night).

I was going to get some type of flip and pay full retail. So if I understand this correctly, all I have to do is go in there, buy the dumbphone, sign up for the $30 unlimited internet/messaging plan, then cut the new sim to a microsim, insert into the iphone 4 and in a few days the plan will be switched to $30 iphone unlimited data?

And if that is what will happen, what happens if i put the sim back into the dumbphone (using a microsim adapter) at some point? Will I lose the iphone unlimited plan?

Don't forget to remove the $20 unlimited text package that remains after you get your confirmation texts!

BTW from first dialing 611 to having my unlimited data back was <1 hour.

Called AT&T @ 3:30pm EST. Told the rep that I had put my Sim in a different phone and couldn't find how to change my plan online. This is a great thing to say as the rep (at least this one) didn't mention anything about a micro-sim being incompatible with a dumbphone.

She asked for the IMEI number which I gave to her (after fake typing in the code that she gave me) and asked which plan I wanted. I asked for the $30 messaging/data plan and she said it wasn't available. I said I saw it online and after a very brief hold, she said it was added and I thanked her and hung up.

Checked OLAM and I verified that I have the $30 unlimited messaging/data plan. Now just waiting for the 1st round of texts.

Rebooted the phone, made a few calls to. Phone is showing as the iPhone 4 in OLAM. I also cannot use data (getting the "cannot activate cellular network" error). I am aware of the fix for this but want to see how it plays out in the next few hours.

Step 1 is done...hopefully this works!!!

Had to go with plan B and call them up. Just played naive and ask them to add my unlimited plan "back" and after some time on hold he did it :D
