yes this is soooo great worked flawlessly. here's my expierence. Bought nokia go phone for $20 at work at 8:15. got to my car and called at&t at 8:30. told lady i broke my iphone and was getting it fixed and was gonna use the go phone for a while and gave all the info and she said all set after double checking i got the $30 text/data and made sure she didnt activate the go phones sim and hung up. made calls, reset phone and just before 11 i got the texts saying i have been given the iphone data. this is so awesome.

Again, maybe an unanswerable question, but I'll ask anyway:
1. Is your plan now identical in AT&T's eyes to an old grandfathered iphone plan? Can they tell short of looking at time/datestamps that this plan was obtained through this method?
2. How do people know that this change will not revert back at the next billing cycle?

by the way, i have a question,

Isnt when you buy iphone4 with contract data plan, and no matter you lost the Iphone or give to somebody or use other dumbphone but the data in the contract have to stay there and stick with you untill you finish all the contract right? They wouldnt let you downgrade your plan to non smart phone, (data) or change anything because its in the contract ?

Other wise people just open the account at ATT and buy iphone4 with 199$ then close it or downgrade to dumbphone plan which is cheaper then just sell their Iphone4 and make a profit ? I heard that you cant change your plan at all no matter you loose your iphone or not during contracted still valid.

PLEASE CONFIRM THIS BEFORE I MAKE A MOVE TO OPEN MY NEW ACCT AT AT&T, I DID HAVE BEFORE BUT SWITCH TO TMOBILE, but because of the iphone4 making me wanted to go back ATT but cant stand their ridiculous data plans.

I believe you can change your plan minutes and addons but you are still locked into paying them for a plan for 2 years. This is what you are doing with this loophole. Changing your plan from an iPhone one to a dumbphone plan. You could definitely make profit off an iPhone if you were to stay with ATT in thr first place. Even the minimum plan over 2 years is well over the cost of an iPhone.

been waiting for 33 hours now, no texts... you're giving me hope, but i didn't really understand what you described when you said:

"...and made sure she didnt activate the go phones sim and hung up. made calls, reset phone and just before 11 i got the texts saying i have been given the iphone data."

what exactly did you do and did the at&t rep do?

She was going to switch my service to the go phone exclusively but i had to tell her that i was putting my iPhones sim in the go phone so she didnt activate the go phone seperate from my iPhone's sim. I made sure she understood i wanted my iPhone's sim the only one active on the account. Any other questions you have i will be glad to help.

-They are exactly the same. On OLAM it just shows "Data Plan for iphone $30.00 unlimited:"

-I have been through a billing cycle and it did not revert.

Help!
On my OLAM, I have the "Data Plan for iPhone... $30 unlimited" option, and am currently on "iPhone Data Plan + 200 Text." I can't select the $30 plan because I'm using "the wrong device." I also cannot receive or send text messages right now because there is a text opt out on my account. How do I fix this? Will my account settle by itself?
I have received the 2 texts saying the plan will be added because I'm using an iPhone 4, and currently have data, now I only need messaging :(

Did you do this with the non-smartphone method? Did you make sure they didn't activate the sim on your dumbphone?

For those who have 2 different "DATA for iPhone" lines on OLAM, does one of those lines disappear?

ok yup, i've gotten the rep to this far as well... that means you placed a call from your iphone again and received a text message within 2.5 hrs... i've been waiting for 2 days like some other people here...

this is what's showing at the moment

Next Bill Cycle: 08/17/2010
Data (MB): 0 of Unlimited
Data (MB): 0.7 of Unlimited (Deactivated)
Data (MB): 182.8 of 200 (Deactivated)
Messaging: 46 of Unlimited

first data = current
2nd data = when they wrongly put the $15 unlimited plan on mine

do you think the system will detect me "faster" once I use a bit of data? i know i can't at the moment, but the only way is to send and receive some MMS?!? i dont want to call at&t again simply because i'm scared...

Mine Says:

Next Bill Cycle: 8/15/10
Data (MB): 99.1 of unlimited (deactivated)
Data (MB): 12.9 of Unlimited (deactivated)
Data (MB) Overage: 10.4
Messaging: 1248 of Unlimited (deactivated)

The OLAM and C/S confirmed that I have unlimited data and unlimited text, so I'm not sure why everything says unlimited. Also, both unlimited data and overage data have been increasing.

Stayed unlimited for me, already started a new cycle.

And yes, says unlimited just like other screenies I've seen of grandfathered plans.

Read the end of my guide - this happened to me, I called, and still got unlimited. I got texts but basically I didn't because the texts didn't activate unlimited.

Just wanted to say I had to wait about 3.5 days for me to get my texts. So patience friends.

After you got your texts, about how long did it take for OLAM to update correctly?
I got the texts, but OLAM did not update -- I am still on the "2g plan" though I have 3G speeds on my iPhone4.

Time to sit tight and wait this whole weekend. Can't send texts because I'm prorated... :(

If you are on the 2g plan you did not use the dumbphone method. I am not sure how that one works with regards to texts. Check the 2g thread for an answer.

So I'm new to the mac forums but I've followed some threads for awhile. I followed every step it said to and it worked, I now have unlimited data. I figured I owed it to everyone to report my story, so i signed up.

I recently signed up with At&t to get the iphone 4. (I love it btw) So I had the 2gb data plan. I used a LG Vu TV CU920 that i was borrowing from a friend. I called at&t in the morning around 10 eastern time. (a girl picked up and she def. didn't sound happy to be at work that morning) I told the her I would like to activate my other phone (didn't really give her a reason why) She said ok and i gave her all the info she needed.

I specifically told her i needed the 30$ unlimited plan for the non-smart phone. She said they don't give those out anymore (which worried me) but she said hold on, let me check. She checked and was like "oh i found it." So relieved. I said that one please and she did it. Then at the end of our convo she was like turn on the new phone and test it out for me. I was like uhhhh ok hold on... I put the phone down and thought of an excuse. I told her my friend forgot to give me the battery for it (lol it was the only thing i could think of) and she was like uhhh ok would you like me to call you back and check up and you? I said no thank you and quickly got off the phone with her.

I then used the iphone and called my house phone like 10 times as well as restarted the phone. I then got up and did things. about 2-3 hours later i got the 2 text messages. I was pretty excited. The instructions say you need to get a third text though so i got nervous. It was now 4pm and still nothing on the third message. So i decided I'd call and make sure I would have this unlimited data.

An older lady picked up. She sounded very kind and not very tech savy so automatically i thought I got this. I told her I had recently changed phones and i was again changing back bc i was stupid. She asked me basic questions. I answered and told her I just wanted to make sure I still have my unlimited data, unlimited text and my 450 minutes. She read it back to me and confirmed I had all i asked. I was so happy I even told her I loved her. I got off the phone and the rest is history.

I've been checking up on my account since then. It looks like my account will be an extra 30-40 dollars next month bc of being "prorated" but whatever, I got what I wanted. I attached a picture of the CSS (customer service summary) Thanks again and I hope it works for everyone else.

I think I checked the OLAM about 5 hours after I got my text and it was already updated. I used the dumbphone method though.

I could be wrong here but could this be a loophole around the ETF for new customers? As in you downgrade to a dumbphone or any other phone through the phone as stated in the OP telling the rep you plan on returning the iPhone. Then while your still within your first 30 days of contract you call back again or go to ATT and say you are within you first 30 days and would like to end your contract... The only way to not get ETF'd is to then return your downgraded phone which you give back to them. Would this work to avoid the ETF?

ok finally it worked!!! after 2.5 or 3 days of waiting... got the message a few minutes ago this morning, and checked my account:
