Called AT&T @ 3:30pm EST. Told the rep that I had put my Sim in a different phone and couldn't find how to change my plan online. This is a great thing to say as the rep (at least this one) didn't mention anything about a micro-sim being incompatible with a dumbphone.

She asked for the IMEI number which I gave to her (after fake typing in the code that she gave me) and asked which plan I wanted. I asked for the $30 messaging/data plan and she said it wasn't available. I said I saw it online and after a very brief hold, she said it was added and I thanked her and hung up.

Checked OLAM and I verified that I have the $30 unlimited messaging/data plan. Now just waiting for the 1st round of texts.

Rebooted the phone, made a few calls to. Phone is showing as the iPhone 4 in OLAM. I also cannot use data (getting the "cannot activate cellular network" error). I am aware of the fix for this but want to see how it plays out in the next few hours.

Step 1 is done...hopefully this works!!!

Just to update..i got the two text messages literally 2 hours after i completed the above call. Logged into OLAM and it is now showing $30 unlimited...woooohooooooooo. Thank you so much OP and whoever else got credit for this...so awesome no worreies anymore.

I also just came back from the AT*T store and picked my brother up a 32gb iphone 4..switched to a family plan now have to do this again so he can have unlimited data also..

2nd time is a charm

This didnt work for me at the first try about a month ago, tried again and worked like a charm. Cant say I did anything differently, but who knows!

Update- Logged on to OLAM to see unlimited data, but there are two options. The first one says: Data Plan for iPhone. Automatically added for customers using iPhone without required Data Plan, and the second is says: Data Plan for iPhone includes unlimited data in the U.S. Access rich HTML email and desktop-level web browsing, as well as Visual Voicemail to listen to voicemail messages in any order you choose.

Should I switch to the second option?

Well I just tried this out with my old motorola KRZR, everything with the AT&T rep went smoothly. He seemed kind of pissed off, almost as if he knew what I was doing, and mentioned at the very end that if I continued using my SIM in my iphone, it would put that data plan back on there. He then said that he'd call me back to make sure everything worked after I switched the SIM to the old phone, but I just ignored the call since I never even bothered turning that old phone on. Hope that I get my unlimited data soon. Thanks for the great guide!

He probably mad because his job isn't the greatest and probably sucks. I don't see how they would be mad about people doing this even if they knew, it isn't like it directly affects them. For them it's not their problem, in the end they are just there for a paycheck and probably could not care less what people do.

Just woke up and saw two texts on my phone. Everything went through without a hitch. Overall waiting time was about 4 hours.

I have a question though. Prior to doing this, I had the 1500 message plan, and after doing this I have unlimited. Is it safe to switch back to 1500 without losing my data?

Im still scared to try this
so can I just say my current phone is damaged so Im using this go phone?

and then I can say "can I also get $30 unlimited for my nokia phone?" do I mention unlimited?

You should be fine doing that. I canceled my messaging plan completely and it didn't affect the unlimited data.

why would you be scared? it's not like the rep is going to start screaming at you and shut down your service. I didn't explain anything to the guy I talked to. The only snag you will probably hit is when you ask for $30 unlimited because some reps don't know it exists. I had to wait a min or two while the guy looked it up. But there were zero problems and only took like 3-4 hours.

When I do it (I first need to straighten out a payment problem on my account before I do anything else) I plan on having the web-page for the $30 Unlimited plan opened up so I can directly quote their website and give them the link if they don't believe me.

Sorry for a double post but I have a separate question.

With the account I'm under the owner is a separate person but I'm set up as an Authorized User and Primary User. Will I be able to switch service to a different cell phone over the phone, even though I'm not the account owner? Will I need to provide any information about the account owner?

quick question. My wife has a dumb phone now. can I add the unlimited data plan onto it through att.com. then when it is working, put the sim card into the iphone that we just got? and then start making calls with it? and hopefully get the data plan upgrade text?

i am an authorised user as well, you are allowed to do anything you want, BUT however you'll need the primary account owner's last 4 digits of his/her social security...

yes, add the $30 unlimited data plan package (web browsing, email, AND unlimited TEXT) to your plan... after you hang up, put the sim card into the iphone 4 and all you have to do is make calls and text and then wait for the automated texts... looks like the wait can be from 2-3 hours to 4 days...

So as long as I have the owner's last 4 digits I can do it myself over the phone without them being present?

yes sir, after you give them the magical 4-digit password, they'll ask you: "and what can I do for you today?"

so I went online and added the $30 unlimited data for the dumb phone, which made me change the family text package to an individual package on my iphone, now with the dumb phone sim in her iphone, she can make and receive calls, but can not send or receive texts. Is this normal, should I leave it or should I call ATT

This is good to know. I am currently waiting on my gift card to show up, shipped today :D. When I get it I am going to call the store and see if they have them in stock. If they do I will change my plan before I go down and get it, then hopefully when I get my phone it will all roll over.

ok, did that with my girlfriend's phone and it worked, however, as i'm trying to add the unlimited family texting again (after having removed all individual texting plans from each phone number on my plan), it gives me the following:

F902: We apologize for the inconvenience, due to a feature conflict on your account, we are unable to add the feature(s) you've requested. The changes can only be done by someone who has direct access to the billing system. For assistance please click the image below to contact our live Click to Chat group for help adding the feature. Click to Chat is available from 8:00am - 10:00pm M-F, 8:00am - 9:00pm Sat ET. If the image does not appear you may also call Customer Service at 1-800-331-0500 or 611 from your wireless phone.

i'm scared to call them now... will they know? will the rep realise that, "oh! this looks strange... unlimited data added on september first of 2010?":confused::confused:
Because I googled f902 error and most of them are related to data some way...

Make sure you have opted out of anything that might conflict. I don't think it will be a problem if you have to call them

before i give them a call...
what exactly does opt-out mean in this case? removing features? i remember there was an OPT-OUT of the 2GB data plan, but that was on the previous bill...

the individual texting plans are the only plans that would conflict, right? I opted-out on each one of the numbers manually, one by one... then added, now it gives me that error...i added the same exact texting plans to each number again, and then added unlimited family texting, which "opts-out" all the individual texting plans automatically altogether... same error...

what's the worst case? would the rep have the right to take the unlimited data off before i confirm it or even without acknowledging it to me?
