OK today is the start of my new bill cycle. Did the *data# and looks like the unlimited data carried over!:D

I am in! Called and changed to the non-smart phone plan , with no problem. CS lady knew the plan, and only need the IMEI number. 2.5 hours later I got 2 texts, and OLAM shows unlimited. No third text yet, but my data was out during the 2.5 hours, but is back to working now.

I just got my iPhone Saturday, and I am not sure what my useage is going to be, but I figure I can always switch to the limited plans. I think the only way I would is if I could use the $15 plan, I will keep the unlimited for the extra $5/month versus the unlimited. Now if they would do rollover data...

Edit: I just went and looked at my OLAM again and it is showing two unlimited options, the one mine defaulted to says
Data Plan for iPhone. Automatically added for customers using iPhone without required Data Plan
The other says
Data Plan for iPhone includes unlimited data in the U.S. Access rich HTML email and desktop-level web browsing, as well as Visual Voicemail to listen to voicemail messages in any order you choose.
Both show $30 and unlimited iPhone 3G data. Any difference? (this is under the manage features page/ my services heading.)

Did this method this morning and was extremely easy. The CS woman did absolutely everything in less than 10 mins and all she wanted was the MIEI number. I told her simply to use the same sim card I already had in my iPhone. I received both text messages in 30 minutes and than my plan was updated online. The My Wireless app on my phone won't display the new data usuage until next billing period so I guess I'll have to wait till next month to see if its permanent! Thanks guys this information alone makes this forum extremely valuable.:D:D:D:D

Yea doesn't appear to be any difference. I have been tempted to switch to the reg unlimited plan, but I am afraid to mess up what I have

Glad it worked. You can dial DATA# (*3282#) and it should show your usage for both plans.

The OLAM won't let you change from the auto unlimited plan to the regular one. I already tried. That's why some of us are worried that this will all come unraveled when AT&T catches on. Maybe if we call in after a couple cycles they will be willing to put us on the regular plan

I never did get the 3rd email, did you?

no need to and most of us have never received a 3rd text...

i didn't know about this auto vs regular unlimited... i've just had a thought... should this really happen, do you think we can do this by changing to a blackberry unlimited plan? and after a few minutes, let them know we're using the iphone again, which should be the regular unlimited that they change us to... because if i call them and change to a blackberry plan, i'm sure it'd be the regular blackberry unlimited plan (if there IS an auto blackberry unlimited)...

Blackberry is a smartphone and thus is on the 200MB and 2GB plan option only. You will have to use a dumb phone.

Never got a third text but I'm positive it doesn't matter. Everything is working as it should and my OLAM shows unlimited. This method is really extremely easy, its the fact that its too easy that makes people confused.

Here is my situation. I used to have a Samsung Impression with the $30 Data/MSG Unlimited plan. I bought an iPhone 3G from a friend, and switched via customer service to the 2GB Web plan. Is this method still possible for me?

And can I use my old Samsung Impression phone or does it need to be a phone that allows 2G service?

Kinda confused after reading all these posts on which "dumb phones" worked and which did not.

Today I did this and within 1hr I got 2 messages and saw the changes on Web. Thanks for wonderful method.

Yes, this method will work. I had same situation that you have. I changed from Samsung Eternity phone to IPhone 4. If your Samsung Impression does not have any active AT&T sim in it, it will work. Basically your IMEI number should not be stored in AT&T server.

Ok...I now get it it's the IMEI from the dumbphone not the SIM ID.....got it....misunderstood the difference between IMEI and SIM ID.

Sweet, that gives me some confidience. I will try and report back.

i have an interesting story. lol

i just tried this over the last hour. and the first time i did it i got a rep who would put everything through with out me powering up the dumb phone, but then when i thought it was all said and done i looked at my olam and i saw he picked the wrong plan for me. not the unlimited 30.00 plan, but a 20.oo message plan and a 10 data plan.. so i thought i had to do it all over again. and i had made the first call with my iphone so it had already registered i was using an iphone after i attempted the switch.

so i called back and told him i simply screwed up and got a call and made a call before i could switch the sim card out into the dumb phone. so he insisted i stay on the line while he make a test call to the dumb phone. i said i would have to call him back when it is charged up because it was dead now (i had never put the sim in now gotten the sim card adapter and was unsure i could even get it to work in the dumb phone) he said he would not put it through until i had the other phone on and running no matter how much i insisted i would just call him back once its powered up to make sure everything was okay. so after we hung up i said what the hell and tried to fit the micro sim card in and could not get it to work at all. so now i grab another lg phone that i had laying around with a different iemi number then i originally gave him and i somehow got the sim card to sit put in that one and powered it up. and sure enough that phone was active and running.. he called me back as he said he would after i got the phone charged up and i said it is all working fine but i had to use a different phone then i origianlly told him but everything works. he said good enough and have a good night.

this is where it gets weird. before i could get the sim out of the lg dumb phone i get both texts and e mail saying i need the data plan for iphone!!!! the iphone had been powered off and sim card removed over an hour earlier! so now i think i am screwed again. so i hurry and make the switch back to the iphone and make my first call with the i phone. i go to olam and sure enough i now have unlimited data for iphone for 30 bucks a month = )

so if anyone is having trouble it may help and be more fool proof if you actually activate the dumb phone.. but what the hell made them think i was using an iphone when i wasn't i can not even think of a reason. lol

but thanks to everyone i have been following this thread a few days and finally decided to do it and wanted to let everyone know it is still working right now and the text came right away,, just to the wrong phone. i took a photo of the text message on the lg phone i was using but do not know how to post a picture on here yet lol

jon

here are some pictures. i would love to know why att thought i needed an iphone plan when i had switched it to an lg 3g capable phone

Waiting for the 2 texts... but..

While i'm waiting for the 2 text messages to come in, (i've already dialed in on the iphone, disabled wifi etc..) Does the system think I'm on the dumb-phone?

I've successfully changed our other 3 iphone4's to unlimited data. Now i'm doing mine. It just feels like it's taking longer than the other 3 iphones i did last week.

Everyone on our lines is on individual text plans and my OLAM says I do have $30 Messaging & Data Unlimited: Text, Web, Email.

Tonight will make it 24hours.. and no texts yet. I'll give it a couple days like everyone else did. I guess it's different for everyone. On the first iphone, i got the texts in under 2 hours. The 2nd, one I got by next morning, the 3rd i got in a day and a half.

Im glad it's working for everyone else still! I'm just bummed I'm the last in my family and I'm worried I may get stuck with 2GB LOL. ~aileen

UPDATE: Interesting... I woke up this morning, NO 2 texts. However, i noticed I was able to get into the internet on my iphone. Wifi is still turned off. I went to my OLAM and it was changed to the $30 Unlimited Data for Iphone. Here's the image. While I never got the 2 texts, the system eventually changed my plan! =) Updating the fam back to Unlimited Texts.

It took me three calls to get this done.

I had a "dumb" phone (Ericsson T39m). Here's how each call went down:

Rep 1) Very helpful and nice. Asked for IMEI # and gave it to her. She insisted it wasn't correct as the IMEI # for my phone was all #'s and no letters. The system still took the # and showed it to her as a T39. When I offered her the SIM card # she said I needed a new one. I said it would fit in the "dumb" phone and she insisted it wouldn't. She then told me to hang up and she would call me back once the SIM was put into the "dumb" phone so she could verify that I was telling the truth and that she could see which phone I was on. I hung up.

Rep 2) Very grumpy. I should have hung up right when she answered. Proceeded to tell me that I had to put a NEW SIM card into the "dumb" phone so that she could manually activate it or I had to take it to a store to activate it. I said I'd call back and she told me that she was happy to have resolved my issues. Right...

Rep 3) Southern fellow with a thick accent. Apparently he knew the "drill" and the whole call lasted no more than five minutes. Too easy!

Got the texts overnight whilst I was alseep. Verfied on OLAM, but apparently they have also added a "$20 Unlimited Text" plan as well? I'll remove that...

UPDATE: It worked for me! It took 3hrs before I got the 2 AT&T txt messages. But man my next AT&T bill is gonna look ugly lol.

I know mine too! I did this with a total of 4 Iphones and all these prorated charges are gonna make my bill look so messy..

BTW, I just got the 2 text messages just now. :D

checked my att wireless app this morning after i made the switch last night. only thing that concerns me is the two iphone data options listed on my olam and on my wirelesss app. my new billing cycle doesn't show up until sept 22. So i was surprised to see it on there already. i dialed *data# and it shows i am already using Data on the unlimited plan.

it's funny how so many people doing this have had such different results. some it takes hours or days to go through. like i said earlier i got my two texts almost immediately, and i made the mistake of actually activating the dumb phone and using it, and it still worked. And they never got the correct iemi number for the dumb phone either. lol

Hey guys.
Im doing this and it seemed to go on without a hitch. Its been 2 days and no text messages. Can anyone tell me what may be wrong? Ive been calling, resetting, and even restoring to no avail. I did this on 9/9 around 2PM Pacific Time.

WIFI has been off for the most part. but I did turn it on to do gadgets trick...the help.benm.at tethering trick. I assume that he did it and it didnt mess with his plan so its probably safe for me.

Some people are getting theirs done in an hour..how is mine taking SO LONG?! Does being a business/corporate customer change anything?

Ive attached some screenshots to help you out.
