nothing happens, you are just wasting your time and possibly exposing the loophole for yourself.

Exactly. AT&T will likely not take issue with this method, so if AT&T ever does a sweep, it will be on the "correct" unlimited plan against the time of when the feature was added.

It'd actually be safer to stay on the "incorrect" iPhone data plan as those would bypass the sweeps. You have to remember that there are employees/CSRs who have helped people get the Unlimited plan when they shouldn't have, so in the unlikely chance that a sweep occurs, it will be on the base Unlimited plan.

This is based on the sweep they did for the Coca-Cola FAN discount where all plans added within a certain date range (i.e. what you're doing now adding the official plan in the current date range) were removed. Surprisingly enough they never closed the loophole (they changed the URL ) or redid the sweep again so people who got the 28% discount after the fact still have them...

So far your advice about your account automatically updating the imei number was false. I know this for a fact because i also updated the imei on a phone i switched almost a year ago. And i was also unable to make changes on that phone online as well. So what makes us think you are right about this. I think showing you had unlimited auto added would raise more of a red Flagg then anything. Buy removing the auto added plan you remove any error message that comes up if you want to make any changes to your account using olam

I just called into CS and tried to update the IMEI # so I could switch to the real iPhone data unlimited plan in OLAM instead of using the automatic plan (so I can rest at ease I guess). Here is what happened:

Rep 1) Called in and said I'd like to switch back to using my iPhone and here's the IMEI #. He took the # and said "Which data plan would you like? The $25 2GB plan or the 200MB plan?" He then said I was not eligble to keep the existing plan on the account. I hung up.

Rep 2) Called back a few mins later. Rep updated the IMEI # and then said "I'll keep the unlimited data plan on there OK?" I said thanks and hung up. Then logged into OLAM and updated the plan and it finally went through for the real unlimited plan and not the automatic plan with the error message.

Whew!

Wow! Scary. To be honest that's what my plan was in case they gave me any hassle. They really are not allowed to change you plan without your permission. They need you to decide between the $25 or $15 plan, if you do not give your permission and hang up, they shouldn't just choose for you.

If they do, that's jacked up, but I'm sure crazier things could happen. You'll just have to go through the process again and cross your fingers it doesn't happen again.

But yeah, key is be vague. I NEVER let on that I know what I am talking about. Seriously. I play dumb. I say, "Hi, I was using my old phone while my iPhone was getting fixed. I just wanted to make sure there's nothing else I needed to do." The rep I had kinda blew me off and said "Nope, as long as you can make calls and get your voicemail, everything is fine." So I then prompted them by saying "Oh, okay, when I called to switch to my old phone I had to give them some number, just making sure I didn't have to do that again". She then said "OH! I can look that up in the system and have it added to your account."

So yeah, be vague, I think they've caught on to this whole auto-unlimited thing and they are suspicious of people who know the system.

Keep in mind that Exegesis (who bravely took one for the team) is a business customer or a corporate account. They tend to be a little bit more "partial" to business customers for some reason.

But I dont think it matters either way. Im sure we're fine having both plans on there.

i think it is just luck of the draw who you get on the phone. my second call to a C/S rep to get the right plan on my dumb phone seemed very suspicious when he heard i switched from the iphone to the dumb phone and i needed the unlimited dumb phone plan. and kept putting me on hold to do research on what my best options were and what not. and he was very interested in how i made the switch and seemed annoyed i when i told him i got a sim card adaptor at radio shack, he seemed very eager to bust this open. But there was nothing he could do about it.

i say call and hang up until you hear an operator that does not sound that bright, lol some of them are more motivated then others. some just wanna do as little as you ask of them then get off the line. others seem to be trying to do a very thorough job like they are trying to impress a supervisor.

Giving my experiance..

My wife will soon be getting an IP4 but until 2 days ago didnt have any data plans. I already had Unlimited Data so I was good. She on the other hand didnt. So i set out to get her unlimited data. Luckly for me I had a friend at work that still has his 1st gen Iphone. I tried to just pluck her SIM into the 1st gen but said the SIM is no longer supported. So i tried calling tech support and over the course of 2 weeks tried various SIM card comb's trying to active at. I explained everytime i called AT&T that i was activating an iphone 1st gen and was told everytime i needed a new SIM that never worked when i got them.

So this was very frustrating for me. My wife wanted unlimited data but was coming to terms with only getting 2gig. My very last attempt i called into ATT tech support. I explained again I was activing an Iphone 1st Gen and this time i gave them the IMEI for the iphone 1 and SIM ID from my wife's working 3g SIM card. The lady gladly took my info, updated her account and told me this phone comes with unlimited data but didnt see the option on her screen so she put me on hold for about 5 mins. She came back and said she added unlimiited data to the account and that she need mngr approval before doing so. But it finally worked!! She now has unlimited data and we're good!!

I just wanted to share my story. I should have used the options on the OP gave but i decided to try another route. I like i've read before on this thread. Much depends on your luck on getting a knowledgeable tech rep and one that isnt afraid to do a little work.

i would love to know the numbers of how many people have made this switch over the last few months.

Too much reading, too many variables.

Get a hold of someone's old iPhone 2G, activate with standard plan, and grandfather yourself in. Simple as that.

It's not really as complicated as it seems. In fact I would say finding an iPhone 2G would be harder than following this procedure.

As far as how many people may have done this in the past few months, I would guess a large number. As many of us were enticed by legit tethering when iOS 4 first came out or were unable to enroll in unlimited data as a part of a new contract.

AT&T is shooting themselves in the foot on this one. If they are not going to give people a legitimate way to get unlimited data, then people are going to find loopholes like this one.

If they had revised their data plans when they came out with the tethering options to still include an unlimited option, but maybe at a higher price, they wouldn't have this problem.

My suggestion would haven to make tethering only an option for the $15 and $25 plans and then had a $35 unlimited plan with tethering exlcuded.

After 5 days...the texts finally came in.
But when I log into OLAM it shows only 1 plan..not the 2 that people are complaining about...

When my plan first came online it only showed 1 plan as well, it took about 24 hours and then it split into the 2 different plans.

funny how the results vary.

i'm gonna attempt this with another iphone 3gs on my account the night before my new billing cycle and see what happens.

Just a quick FYI, the 30 dollar price is a family plan price. It's actually 15 for single users.

This threw me at first. I'm now waiting for my two text messages...

EDIT: Okay, i think this is screwy. I added the 200 text messaging plan, and the 30 dollar plan would NOT show up. She added a 15 dollar "Data Unlimited" plan. Is this going to screw up the process?

EDIT 2: Crisis Averted... called in and added the 30 dollar plan.

I made the same mistake. You have to be on the $30 unlimited non smart phone plan. It is NOT a family plan. If you have to put yourself on another plan or some other people on your account then so be it.

Correct. Didn't even need to wait the 3 hours. It came in in about 20 minutes.

mine came through quick like that also. i would love to know the underlying reason why some have waited hours and sometimes days and a few have gotten the texts with in minutes. what was funny was i got my two texts when i still had my iphone sim in my lg phone. maybe because it was a 3g capable phone.

are there any additional steps or things to avoid if i'm doing this with a family plan but ONLY changing one line (primary one) to unlimited?

make sure you are not on an unlimited text plan or a family text plan, switch your text plan over to 200 txt first.

I don't have any texting plan on my line, the wife's got a 200 TXT plan on her line. Am I good to go?

iPhone 3gs

hey guys a couple of quick questions here. I read through all the posts but couldn't find anything like my case.

I am currently running an iPhone 3gs with no data and an unlimited text plan.

1) Does this process work for getting a new data plan on an iPhone 3gs? If I wanted to start paying $30 for unlimited data, would the same steps apply?

2) If I understand everyones posts correctly, the $30 unlimited data plan includes text? So instead of paying $20 for unlimited text and no data, I will be paying $30 for unlimited data and unlimited text? Or am I mistaken, and it would be $50 for unlimited data + text.

Thanks a bunch, going to try this in the morning with an old Razr v9 *fingers crossed*

So OLAM shows that they don't know which phone I have after about twelve hours. I have not gotten the texts yet. Should I call in to AT&T or switch it on OLAM?
