Didn't work for me unfortunately. After I gave the IMEI number he said did I want the same 2gb plan or the 200. I asked him if there was unlimited and he said no. He said I didn't have it before so he couldn't do it. Oh well, I guess I'll just save $5 a month for now. I wasn't going over 2gb anyway since I have wifi at work/school/home. But it would've been nice to have peace of mind for those times where I'm away and want to tether (via jb).

Wait you shouldn't have given an imei number in the same phone call as asking to be switched back to unlimited (which should
Be asked in the second call if the text fails)

I'm confused? After the texts fail, don't I call to switch my phone back to the iphone?

IMO, this method is not easier. This one involves calling AT&T and being lucky and getting a good customer service rep. Some can be helpful and not know if u qualify for the $30 unlimited plan, while others can just look at ur earlier bills or w/e and see that u dont. The iPhone 2G way is easier and less complicated o.o

It was easy when the plan was automatically switching. Now it seems like it isn't. The 2g method is still working?

works wayyyy easier. I was a lil worried when it took 4 hours them to switch me to unlimited, but the method works flawlessly. And now I dont have to worry about going over 2gb and getting overage charges ;)

unlimited

Not sure if this is still working... called AT&T and gave them IMEI of Go Phone... it appears that the plan was switched to the 2G unlimited data/msg/email, but it's hosed my 3G on the iPhone ("Could not activate cellular data network: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service" error message). So it seems that the switch to 2G unlimited data/msg/email worked, but haven't gotten a txt yet (over 10 hours)... will wait overnight before calling AT&T...any advice? I did not previously have unlimited txt'ing on my iPhone plan.

You'll have to call at&t - some people get the texts, others don't.

Do I actually have to have the phone in my possession? If not, could I borrow an IMEI? :(:

Edit: You can PM it to me. I'll PayPal if need be.

Update as i go

Anyone tried it with a none att phone? Im using an old unlock samsung....hopefully that doesnt affect anything

Im trying this method out....
One thing that went different in the initial call is the CS rep did not ask for my sim number. After she set up the new IMEI and the 30 unlimited text/data plan, she ask me to switch the sim card into the dumb phone so she can call and verify its working. I told her im heading out so she didnt have to. But she said shes gonna do it anyways.

Hung up and waited 10 mins before making a call from my iphone...has been almost 30 mins no text yet. Olam is showing i have the $30 unlimited dumb phone data plan. Im getting the "Could not activate cellular data network: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service" error message as well.

Ill giv it another hr and half before i call.

Update: IT WORKED. got the two text and one email in about an hr and 50 min. Logged into olam and viola $30 unlimited 3g data plan. Called 611 again to take off the unlimited text coz i dont want it. The CS rep also confirmed my unlimited 3G.

Note: This is a brand new account with att that is barely a month old. Got the iPh4 on 6/29.

this is as off 7/19/2010 3pm est

Loophole closed....

If you put the 2g data/email/text on a nonsmart phone then you have to put a 2g or 200mb plan on iphone, if you had the unlimited plan before they can look through records and adjust at a later date, but the stipulation is that you must have had the smartphone unlimited plan on June 7, 2010. info up to date as of 1400 eastern time.

Dang it.

I hope everything works as Im doing the same. Nrwrit3r is there a way we can chat or email, etc? I had a quick question I wanted to ask you.

Were you told this by a CSR at AT&T? Where did this info come from?

I followed the OP's instructions and successfully added the Unlimited Plan to my iPhone 4! :)

The 4 is my first iPhone, and have never had service with AT&T before.

I called AT&T around 3:00PM today (7/19/10) and had them switch my iPhone 4 to the Nokia 2320 (GoPhone). My rep asked only for the IMEI # of the Nokia, and said they did not need the iPhone 4 SIM # because it was already activated, and also that I was calling from it. I asked to add the $30 Unlimited Text, Talk, Web for Non-Smartphones, and the rep said no problem. I hung up and made a call from my iPhone 4, and began waiting for the texts to arrive.

I tried using the internet, but I received the following error message, "Could not activate cellular data network: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service".

I continued being patient, and sure enough 1hr and 40min (4:40PM-ish) later, I received 2 texts, and an email.

1st Text: "Did you know an eligible data plan is required for you iPhone? Call 611 or visit att.com/iPhoneplans for details."

2nd Text: "Your iPhone requires an eligible data plan. We have added an appropriate plan and messaging pkg. Call 611 or go to att.com/iPhoneplans for info"

The email was titled "iPhone Data Usage Alert for..." and stated they had changed my phone to the appropriate iPhone data plan and text package.

I then checked OLAM and I had the $30 Unlimited Plan for iPhone, and the $20 Unlimited Texting plan!

Big thanks OP!

This method works well, you must follow the directions exactly (if you have Unlimited Texting, make sure you remove it before calling the first time. Like the OP said, you can add the $5.00 text plan if you so choose), and most of all, be patient! Good luck!

Ok so clear things up, I will give the imei number of the nokia phone, and I will call at&t on the iphone, or do I have to use a different phone? Glad to hear things worked!

You will call 611 on your iPhone 4, and they will ask the IMEI # of your non-smartphone. You'll ask to add the $30 non-smartphone unlimited plan and hang up when finished. Make a call using your iPhone 4 afterwards, so they know you have switched back, and simply wait for the texts from AT&T. Should take a couple of hours. Took me just over an hour and a half.

Hey I wanted to say thank you. So after I speak to them, make a regular phone call to anyone on the iphone, and I havent even made my att log in info, but i when I get it create it, things should work?

No problem :)

I would set up your AT&T login for online account management before trying anything, that way you can have access to your account by chance you might need it. Make sure you do not have the unlimited text plan enabled before you call. It will not work if you do. The $5 text plan worked for me.

If you follow the original post's instructions, it should work. Patience is key.

thanks can i sign up at att.com for the online account information? I dont have anything but a best buy receipt and my new # they gave me lol.

I wonder why some people get the texts and some don't? The only thing different I can think of is that we're activating different dumbphones. Doesn't seem like that would affect it though?

@ThomasJ20

Just go to the AT&T Wireless site and click register. It should ask for your wireless phone #. Enter it, and follow the prompts from then on. Not too difficult.

@robotphood

I'm not too sure. My guess is that either people are trying to use older 3G phones, or they have not switched from unlimited messaging plans. It's possible that various non-smartphones are causing issues, but that's pretty difficult to narrow down. I used a Nokia 2320, and had no difficulties. It's only $30 at Best Buy. If trouble ensues, I suggest trying this particular phone. Looking at the poll above suggests a 75%+ success rate for the method.

Oh ok will do Rouser. After I register, should I wait a bit before I call or will my information already be in the at&t files? Thank you so much for the help, andnrwrit3r, and gadget88.

You should be good to go right after you register. I'd check over your account info to make sure it's correct, then give it a shot. Let us know how it goes :)
