never recieved the texts, and its still showing iphone 4 as phone on my account online. what should i do, and what should i ask?

@ThomasJ20

First, would you care making a screen capture of your AT&T OLAM features? Perhaps you have something enabled that is interfering. Probably not, but you never know.

Are you using wifi with your iPhone 4? It might help to turn it off that way it will only be using cell data.

I am curious, when attempting to use the data (internet, maps, etc) what does it say?

Try putting the phone in airplane mode, then turn it off so the phone reconnects to the network. Try making a few more phone calls, perhaps this will help the system recognize you have switched back to the iPhone from the non-smartphone.

Have you restarted your phone since calling AT&T? I would also try this.

I'd try all the steps I listed above, and give it 2-3 hours to see if it helps.

If this does not work, I would call AT&T and tell them you want to switch back from your non-smartphone to your iPhone 4. They should ask for your IMEI # of the iPhone. After that, they will tell you they need to add a data plan to your account. If you're lucky, unlimited will be an option from them. More than likely only 2GB or 200MB will be available. If this is the case, I would hang up abruptly before you tell them your choice, and see if the system recognizes your phone within several hours. I suspect that this may work because the rep will have already entered the iPhone IMEI back into the system, and should officially switch you back. Since a data plan will not have been chosen yet, the system should add unlimited by default.

After the point where I suggested hanging up abruptly, I would go through the steps listed above (phone restart, no wifi->cell data only, placing calls from iPhone 4), while waiting for the texts.

I hope this helps.

I have a question about the iphone plan for unlimited. I got everything set up through your steps. It now saids $30 unlimited and $20 for text messages, but I had the rep. change it to a $30 bundle for both unlimited text. I have the lowest voice plan also and had the rep approximate my next phone bill which would be $74. Will I have to pay $50 (unlimited text and Internet) now?

this whole thing is just to get you unlimited data for $30. The unl data, n texts is only for the non smart phone. Once your back to the iphone you get unimited data for $30 and can get rid of text if you want

I've been working with ThomasJ20 through PMs and the reason he has been having trouble is because the AT&T rep added the wrong plan to his non-smartphone initially.

They added a $10 data plan + $20 texting plan. Clearly the wrong plan, but still adds to $30. Either way, that seems to have been the hangup.

I figured the best way was to start over.

ThomasJ20 called AT&T to add back his iPhone 4 to basically get the phone back to where he started.

He called AT&T again to switch to the non-smartphone, and I have verified that they added the correct $30 plan.

While time will tell if this will work for him, the stats say it should. If you are having trouble with getting this method to work, be patient and work through it.

It should work.

If you have problems, make sure in OLAM that they added the correct plan. There is a chance that you have been paired with a bad AT&T rep, and they made a mistake. If it doesn't work, call AT&T and reset where you were at the beginning. Then try again.

This is quite strange... I was able to get it to work (although I never got the txt messages and had to call ATT), and everything was fine (confirmed via myWireless and ATT's webpage). But now, a few days later, when I look at the ATT myWireless app, it says I have the 2 GB plan and when I look at ATT's website, it says unlimited.

Anyone else have this same issue?

Might take the next billing cycle to show up on the wireless app. I would go with the site, as that's way more reliable than an app.

Thank you Rouser 1000% and also to everyone else who helped me! Just followed Rouser's advice, and now I have unlimited 3g. Be sure sure to ask for the plan Rouser, Gadget88, and Nrwrit3r explained, good luck to all who try as well.

how it will look in 'MyWireless' app...

any reports of anyone getting "busted", ie put back on 2GB or 200MB plan?

the loophole will surely get plugged at some point...

get it while you can! :D

I had been on WIFI since doing the switch back and forth. This morning I got a no server error when I tried to connect to 3G . Reset my network settings and it works fine now.

L.C.W. I see the same in the MyWireless app as well. My billing cycle ends in three days, so hopefully things will work out fine.

If anyone reading this thread has a chance to attempt adding unlimited and is on the fence, I would do it soon. AT&T will figure this out soon enough, and the method won't work anymore. This method is just as simple as using the iPhone 2G, but is much cheaper (if you don't have the original iPhone). Regardless, it will work. You just have to be diligent and follow the instructions exactly.

If you get stuck, focus on the plan in OLAM that the AT&T rep added to your non-smartphone. If it is not the $30 "Messaging & Data Unlimited: Quick Messaging/Basic Phones" you will sit by your iPhone for hours waiting for texts that will never come. If it is the correct plan, disable wifi during the waiting period, make a phone call, then restart your phone. Keep making calls and trying to use the internet (which will not work, you'll get an error message) while you wait for the system to add the correct data plan to your iPhone. If you do it correctly, you'll receive the 2 texts within 2-3 hours.

For those of you having trouble, check the pic above to make sure your OLAM looks like the image to the right. If not, you will continue to not receive the text from AT&T because the rep initially added the wrong plan.

This is what happened with ThomasJ20, and he basically had to start all over. He did, and it now works.

Although this is a good suggestion, I think there is some other variable that determines whether or not you get the texts. Though I seem to be the only one who got the texts but didn't get unlimited till I called. Too bad I missed the tethering app :( have to wait for the jb

has anyone who did the 2G method and reached their next bill cycle been switched over to the 3G Unlimited on the online att site yet?

Agreed. I haven't seen anything that I didn't do or do wrong so far. And the JB should be out soon. Socks method for tethering is a pain if you plan to use multiple devices/PCs to connect anyway. I sort of regret spending 99 cents on it ha.

@Nrwrit3r

I wasn't suggesting that it was the only possible reason, simply that it has a good chance of being the reason if someone is not receiving the texts. I just wanted people to know that they need to make sure in OLAM that they were given the correct plan by the AT&T rep initially. I've already helped quite a few people through PMs with this issue. For why people do not receive texts if they followed the instructions and had the correct plan added to the non-smartphone, I'm not sure we can narrow it down. We're working off a glitch/loophole to get it to work anyway, and there are bound to be some variances. It's possible it also has something to do with the type of non-smartphone you use, the time of day you call, position of the planets, etc. but for the most part, it works. :)

Oh and the Handy Light app works well although it can be a bit of a pain. It's nice to be able to tether with unlimited without a jailbreak, even if there are quite a few steps involved. Better than nothing for sure.

agreed! that's why i'm bummed i wasn't able to d/l handy light :(

that's the whole point, of having a non-JB way to tether with unlimited... that's what burns me the most with the 2GB plan... without tethering, it's plenty of data (unless you stream pandora, or slacker or whatever while on 3G, which can easily be avoided and not a deal breaker to me per say)... but 2GB is simply waaay too low if you tether on a regular basis. AT&T knew exactly what it was doing when it began the capped data plans. Well screw them. I'm at least glad this loophole exists for now and than many of us have been able to make use of it.

I did everything correctly and its still only been 2 and a half hours so im not panicking but I have not received any texts from them. One question though. What if I never got any texts and it somehow kept me on the non smart phone unlimited data and text would that apply to the iphone or would I get charged for data and texting. For instance, Ive sent texts since calling the ATT rep using my iphone, am I getting charged for those since I am not on the non smart phone?

also my OLAM looks exactly like the screenshot posted above

If you are on the non-smartphone plan, you would not be able to get data on your iPhone. You would get an error message.

My texts didn't come in for about 3.5-4 hours.

I just tried this tonight. I called in and told them that I need to change my iPhone to a gophone that I purchased at Best Buy. I gave them my phone number to switch. They then asked for the IMEI of the dumb phone. I gave them that. I then had them add on the Messaging & Data Unlimited: Quick Messaging/Basic Phones. It is showing up under my OLAM screen, but I haven't received the texts. I did this about three hours ago.

My iPhone can still make and receive calls without a problem, but still have not received the texts.

***Update***
I called AT&T and talked to a CSR rep to get some information. They said the iPhone 4 should update almost instantly to add back in a data plan. I asked her to verify the SIM and IMEI on my account and it was still the GoPhone. I had the SIM in my iPhone4. I made a few more calls and powered it off a few times to see if it helped. I even swapped it to another iphone4 to see what would happen.
