Ok, I've come up on two questions:

First, I got the card working in OSX using Netkas (XFX 4890) works fine.

Now I'm considering flashing it, but reading the instructions I see two problems:

1. When you make a backup of the ROM, it saves a .bin file (RV490.bin) the instructions (http://web.me.com/jacobcroft/4870Flash/4870Flash.html) till me to rename it to pc1xfx.rom

However, when I move the file into MagicISO to burn, it renames it to pc1xfx.rom.bin.

Is running a .bin file in DOS using ATI Flash going to cause problems, rather than a rom?

2. Since I already put in the 4890, when I restart to boot from the made boot disk for flashing, I won't see anything. Should I select it in startup disks in Windows? And if for some reason it doesn't work, can I remove the disk and it'll default to an OS? Or will I forever get a black screen?

Note: I can't put both cards in as the instructions ask. They both require power, unlike the suggested 7300GT he had.

You are not renaming the file to .rom as requested. You are not changing the file ending. You need to enable this in Windows settings.

What Cindori means is that you need to enable the showing of certain file extensions.

That's the part of those jacobsoft instructions that sucks.

THERE IS NO NEED FOR 2 CARDS IN WHEN YOU FLASH !!!

All you are doing is increasing odds that you will bugger something up.

Get everything ready and then choose your DOS/WIndows disk as startup disc.

Replace your current card with the one you want to flash.

SO MUCH SIMPLER.

Sorry for two many questions but

Where do I change the settings in Windows Vista to show all extensions?

Also, I change the extension within MagicISO (from .bin to .rom) would that work?

I have an USB drive that gets booted by a PC. In a 2006 Mac Pro it is not recognised by EFI. I have also tried with a HD to boot from DOS but it doesn't work. So my assumption is that DOS only boots from CD. I may have to try an older and smaller HD which formats to FAT16.

Netkas... I've got 2.5T/s XFX 4890 ZDFC

I have it in slot 2 for cooling purposes... Would that make a difference?

What??? Well riddle me this smarty pants, how do you know all about ATI and roms and what not? Your a psychic spy working for Palm while the port webos and you've been sent to infiltrate the Mac ranks and gain our trust by posting roms that your cat typed while you fell asleep from drinking too much of your russian potato juice. Your roms make the heat pipes squirt nitro-glycerin into our cpu fans... then you simply dial the fan speed up till it makes sparks and the metal box we can the "mac pro" really is a bomb casing that throws shrapnel in all directions. Not all mac owners are ignorant noobs. We think outside the box. Indeed.

Early 2008 8x2.8ghz. I should have thought of that. Does the model support that link speed? Grind my gears and call me shiftless if it don't.

I don't think that having it in slot to on the 2008 model would make a difference, as I think both slots 1 and 2 are 16x lanes. And yes, your computer is pcie 2.0, so it is capable of 5

I want some of what you have been smoking.

I want some of what you have been smoking.

The filter shuts down after a mug or two of homebrew... some sort of failsafe. Can't smoke it, we've tried. You can add a dribble of 151 on top and light it. Don't ever do that more than once though, usually ends bad the second time around.

Anyway, I stumbled on this doc.... 1+2 are PCIE2.0 slots: http://developer.apple.com/document...//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40003937-SW1_1200331175

I need to figure out if the XFX 4890 zdfc is a pcie2.0 card. EDIT: it is. Says on the box.

what bootcamped windows shows about link speed/type ?

Another success here with a ref design Sapphire card, in Mac Pro Rev1.
Dual DVI working for about 1 min, then KP from AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext (and single DVI only for second port) in Leopard (no KP in SL).

Is there a way to make custom hybrid ROM for "exotics" 4890 with Pipomolo42's method ?

By the way, thanks Netkas !

I am watching this thread very closely.

Later on this year after all the bugs are sorted and a list of working cards is compiled I shall try it myself.

my 4870 does 850/1100 but 512Mb ram is sucky!

he already did...he used Pipolomos method and added some things for 4890.

interesting that you get a whole 60 secs.

mine draws second display just long enough to see it finish....then reboot...no more than 10 secs
