What are the downsides of using a flashed PC videocard on Mac?

What is the discussion about PCI 1.0 / 2.0 about? (I'm not sure what it means )

Thanks Rominator for your feedback!

I think I will stick then to flashing a 4870 instead... that way I can easily update MacOSx.

Thanks for the tips about having only one video card in the system.

PC 4870 have no VGA, HDMI and HD audio.

PCIe 2.0 is faster than 1.0. If your Mac Pro has an older PCIe bus you may not be able to get the highest performance in every configuration or operating system.

Can someone make an EFI rom, this is from my Sapphire 4890 1GB. I tried with netkas rom's and i only can see the boot screen (apple) after that i get a white screen with some grey weard lines.

Just did a vanilla install of Snow Leopard on my 2008 Mac Pro and flashed Sapphire 4890 with excellent results.
Worked out of the box - just no QE/CI.
Installed the Modified Kexts and that solved it.

Here are my results from benchmarking:

By the way, you have to use the DVI closer to the logicboard to get dual DVI in Leopard.
I believe Snow Leopard does not have that issue although I didn't test it out but i'll check later today.

Tried flashing a Diamond 4890 (A4890PE51G), does not work. Flash went OK, but now the mac goes into a chime loop even if a working card is in slot 1.

Reflashed and exchanted for a HIS H489F1GP, which is more likely a reference card.

And it works!

I'll post screens once I get the proper drivers installed.

Got the software side sorted, thanks to a little help via IRC.

Confirmed dual DVI working just fine in SL. The fan isn't terrible but it's not exactly quiet either. I'll probably replace it with the one mentioned earlier.

Excellent!
Glad to see more confirmed flashes for SL.

Hey guys I finally got around to logging a ticket with XFX about the PCIE 1.0 vs 2.0. The guy was pretty helpful and said really i shouldn't be too concerned... he said the 4890 would saturate a PCIE 1.0 8x Bus. Since i've got 16x dedicated to it right now i'm not worried.

Now if next year when I get my highpoint raid card and it's not in 2.0 mode *then* i'll worry ;)

Dual dvi under SL? Great news! Now if my Intel X25-M would just get here so I can install and flash my card.

is it the 2nd display working ? I need to use Cinema Display 30inch and a 1900x1200 second display

Some additional notes.

I was using this to play Aion last night. temps never broke 70C, and the fan IS stepping up as needed. However, I noticed the "usage" meter in the catalyst control center never broke 65% or so. Not sure if that's because Aion isn't really pushing it, or if it's the HT issue.

Perhaps someone would like to run 3dmark on their flashed card?

I runned 3Dmark vantage and gave me 9795, as i can see around internet the result its OK. ;)

I'm sunk...

I just picked up a HD 4890 from local338 (eBay). I didn't realize that dual DVI won't work under OSX (according to the listing). Is there anything I can do to correct that? Otherwise I just wasted $300 :(

Thanks

no, only snow leopard

don't see why you wouldnt want snow leopard anyway

it's a good performance boost, and only 29$
or, for me, who downloaded a pirated copy, 0$...

also you would want to keep your original graphic card anyway as backup, in case you need to reinstall Leopard you would get black screen with a 4890 cause the drivers does not exist on a Leopard install DVD.

I run my 2nd display on my old crappy 7300gt.

Cant use sl.
CS3 has too many bugs under photoshop and indesign (the infamous crahs when saving bug).
and fcp (plugins and color) cant run with two gfx cards...

so no go..

Well.Time to sack it up,cut the losses and order the apple 4870.
It was nice to tinker again for a while...
:D
