I think Jobs usually kept up his diplomatic facade when speaking on the record. He was well-kown to throw temper tantrums and tear into competitors' (and Apple's own) products behind closed doors, but AFAIK he didn't really do it in public.

If he had been in a similar situation as Musk was in this interview, I think he would have gone into full-on salesman mode and launched into an explanation why Apple's product is far superior than anything competitors could ever hope to offer. Actual public jabs at other companies were far and few between, and they were usually directed at opponents with bigger market share. (IBM in the 1980s, Microsoft in the 1990s, Google/Android in the 2000s.)

When has Steve Jobs ever walked back his trash talking?

My comment was related to each one's individual laser focus to setting and achieving targets and not about their diplomacy. Apologies for not clarifying

Funny thing is he's right about the Apple Watch (regardless of context).

Even funnier still, and quite ironically, his comment about Apple Watch applies to his cars. It would also apply to the original Mac and iPhone... It seems in many cases, the 3rd time's the charm as far as mass market acceptance of new technology goes.

Someone said was like Steve Jobs. I was merely pointing out that Steve Jobs would never walk back his trash talking. So in that respect he's not like Steve Jobs.

In that respect yes but both are visionaries and important people in tech innovations. Both great risk takers and forward thinkers. so in that respect, yes they are alike.

Yeah I also think it's worrying, but for a different reason.

I don't agree with what he said and think the personal insults to those engineers were not classy. However, I think it's fascinating how he needs to backtrack and start singing Apple's praises because he's stirred a hornets nest.

If this was him flaming, say, Microsoft, Google or Facebook, the world would have shrugged and moved on. When it comes to Apple, the world demands an apology.

Whatever the reason is, they do have a lot of power.
Yes, that power is undeniable and the reason is because Apple's the biggest brand today, maybe even ever.

hahahahhahah

scared of 'what apple is capable of'? do you have any idea who Elon Musk is and what he does?
I do know who he is and what he does, and I never implied that his company is not capable of great things. I just stated that he is either scared or jealous (or both) of Apple and what they are capable of, otherwise he wouldn't have made those comments and backtrack the following day.

For now, it seems this was a knee jerk reaction from someone that has been dealing with a poaching war behind the scenes. On top of that, Elon is well aware that Apple Car could kill Tesla. So, yes, it's a touchy area for him and it should be. Any tech exec out there would be a fool to bet against Apple.

At this point Elon is just waiting to exhale. We'll see what happens in 5 years when Apple Car arrives.

It's inevitable, all big companies fall. Think Sony, Kodak, Apple at one point and many more.
Yes, it's inevitable depending on what time frame we're talking about. It could very well happen to Apple as well, but I doubt they would go down without a fight. They are close to being a trillion dollar company, after all.

With the culture Jobs created at both Pixar and Apple imo they will be good for a long while. As long as their focus remains pure; creating objects they themselves are truly excited about with an outrageous attention to craft and detail. Reading Ive's most recent comments on Steve made me smile. That kind of joy is exactly what has made and makes Apple Apple.

Tesla cars, like all electric cars, are totally impractical for everyday use.

When electric cars can be charged from 0%-100% in 2 minutes, when the battery doesn't cost a fortune to replace every few years, when there are charging stations installed in every single parking space and garage, and when the range is 400-600 miles a charge consistently for ten years, then they may take off.

Until then, they are government-subsidised trinkets for rich men with time on their hands.

This is little like 'drunk texting' and regretting your actions the following morning.
How about a Drunkchat app?

I'm surprised that he was threatened by Apple's car project. He was the one that gave away his patents to encourage more development with the electric car. Kind of disappointed with his comments.

That bitterness from all you guys is great. Most people with some sense would actually agree with most of what he has said and that it's really not that negative. It really is OK to be critical of a company even if you like their products.

It's actually better if you can critisize those you love.
