I have to agree with him about the watch. I don't see the point of it. I have no compelling reason at all to own one... personally. Maybe it appeals to some people and I'm sure it's extremely well designed, but I don't see the widespread appeal. The iPhone on the other hand blew everyone's mind and was profoundly compelling... turned an entire industry upside down. I know those kind of products don't happen very often, but still. Yah. A watch. Meh. Whatever.

Apple doesn't seem to be anything Tesla needs to worry about, Google is. Any way, Apple is way way way behind Tesla and Google in this racing.
But unlike tesla isn't in danger of going out of business in the next few years without major financial support

What a blowhard...no wonder he gets so much attention from the faithful...

Luckily for him, much of what the company does is in ultra wealthy California. If he was located in any other state his "cars"" would have a heck of a time garnering the attention they do. There's a lot of hidden myths about the finances of his company that his masterful smoke and mirrors accounting guru's conceal. If not bought out by another company fairly soon, simply for the value of the carbon credits alone, the veil will be pulled.

Elon Musk walks a fine high wire act based on his charisma alone.

Tesla is not in danger of going out of business. You don't have a clue what you are talking about. Take a college level finance course.

I'm sorry, but he was never wrong. Releasing a car with bugs like the 6s, could actually hurt people. Shutting off randomly, not responding for a couple seconds...
You act like, Apple can never do wrong! Look, I love Apple as much as the next one, but musk really just told the truth: Apple can't release a car with the same attitude, as they release their other products these days.
A car has to be perfect, otherwise people can get hurt!

Um yeaaaa...I guess you missed the multiple stories about Teslas catching ON FIRE in their early days; wouldn't really call that safe. My 6S hasn't burst into flames yet.

They can't sell carbon credits and make enough money to compete with a company like Apple. They will need to actually make money on their products which they aren't right now. Tesla will go out of business eventually if they don't start actually making money from selling cars.

Is this the going trend these days ? Make a nasty statement and then backtrack the very next day ?

Sorkin..Musk... I wonder who is next in Line :D
This strategy goes all the way back to P. T. Barnum promoting his circus acts. The more controversy, the bigger the crowd. Then a young circus hand listened to this advice and did well promoting the early motion picture business. His name was Sam Goldwyn.

Something as complicated as a computer in your pocket WILL have bugs. End of story. I don't care who makes it or how long it's tested, IT WILL HAVE BUGS. People need to get over that.
Little bugs: yeah, definitely.
Critical bugs, like the device turning itself off: no way!
Seriously, an iPhone is not more complicated, than the entire computer system of a modern car! The only difference is, Apple releases an iPhone every year and has to react to and implement new technology within a couple months, whereas car manufacturers take many years to perfect their product.
I mean, what about cooks comment from 2012, that Apple can only do some few really good things? These days, it seems, they want to go into every business.

Why did he feel clarification was necessary? Anyone with sense knows it was a lighthearted friendly jab.
Calling it 'backtracking' is misrepresenting what was said.
This is the internet, where just one word gets taken way out of hand.

Who wants to be the early adopter!! :D

I'll bet my life insurance on it :p

Not so fast.. At some point the subsidies will end... The unions and corporate thugs will point their weapons his way. Have you read how they've colluded to keep Tesla from opening dealerships in some states?

Isn't it amazing all these guys talking trash against Apple then all of a sudden they start kissing ass right after? Hmmm....

Why would Tesla worry about Google? The will never officially release a car. They're only going to license the self driving OS to real car makers. Kind of like they do with their phone. Ouch.

I think Musk is fairly correct about Apple making cars. It's a completely different foreign industry for Apple. The culture is also different. Apple has moved towards a model where they want you to upgrade annually, and they essentially build in an expiration date on their products so you will be forced to upgrade. If you own an iPhone or iPad that's older than 2-3 years, basically it's considered obsolete. Not everyone can or should lease a car. Cars should also be built to last, especially if they are going to be a premium product. This is a natural evolution for Apple, but I highly doubt that they'll do well the first decade they try it out. This feels very much like Apple's move with the Apple Watch. It's going to serve a niche audience for a prolong period of time. However as technology improves, I do think that an investment like this will benefit Apple in 20-30 years, because by then the cost would likely go down enough to be acceptable to the average consumer.
