Free speech is so easy...but why do so many people fear it? So Trump is on twitter? Dont read his idiot tweets. What could be easier. If you are upset because you think he should be suppressed...you are the villain in the story. We should block Holodomor denial, explicit threats of violence, pornography. All the things we block in community spheres but everything else .... free speech. Its so easy.

Ya know… I think Macrumors needs a Mega Action Ginormous Arguing Political moniker now.

Limited to forum members of only the highest class, by invite only. And at least 1000 posts.

I'm tired of this mis-labeled "free speech" argument. Doesn't freedom of speech imply the freedom to not participate in a conversation? Free speech shouldn't mean forced participation. I don't want to listen or contribute, and don't blame advertisers for not wanting to either.
The companies that (previously) run ads on Twitter absolutely have every right to back away. However, at the same time it speaks ill of their priority -- especially as companies founded in America -- towards a basic human right. And when these companies pull out of advertising en masse, it's not good for Twitter's survival, either.

The easy answer? Obliterate all social media completely. Hate and evil are intrinsic to humanity. But certain political affiliations (I'll let you figure out who) won't want to give it up -- they thrive on the amount of hate, division and sense of control it brings.

So, has the Taliban tweeted anything against the rules of Twitter?

Lol so a group of extremists who rape women, kill people, and are some of the worst people in the world are allowed to be on Twitter because they haven’t said anything mean to someone? Makes good sense. Might as well allow the Ku Klux Klan on there as long as they don’t say anything mean to anyone.

It’s not about what they tweet, it’s about what they represent. Its hatred in the most extreme form. But sure, if clinging to some arbitrary guidelines as a way to justify it makes you feel ok with it then you do you.

Of the many things one might call Twitter, a basic human right is not among them.

They don't. However, they can:
  1. not advertise on Twitter
  2. not promote Twitter to Apple customers
  3. not keep Twitter in the App Store
Just like Parler, Twitter can go be pure web until they (re-)figure out how to take care of their compliance with domestic and international laws around things like privacy, hate speech and copyright.
I appreciate your rational response here.

And it introduces an interesting question surrounding the pending legal fight with EU and Epic: does banning Twitter off the AppStore constitute an effective silencing of a source of information and communication?

I suspect that those on the side of banning Twitter from Apple Store are the same that also believe the the App Store should be free and open to everyone, with no limitations on side loading, etc.

Thoughts?

Elon has made some people so crazy that they are defending the Taliban now.

I was all for Apple in the Epic v Apple saga.

But IF it’s true (that’s a big if) that Apple is threatening Twitters placement in the app store simple because ‘we don’t like you’ then that is wrong and a blatant abuse of power.
Twitter and other Social networks are constantly working to meet the (longstanding) requirements of the App Store in terms of removing hateful, pornographic, etc. posts and to maintain proper support for customer reporting such behavior. Various countries also have laws around such things - so in addition to Apple and Google not wanting to be associated with such a forum, they may also have legal liabilities.

It would make sense after heavy layoffs in the groups that did this work, Twitter is no longer in compliance with the various App Stores' requirements.

Orange man bad, Tesla man bad, Russia man bad… everyone forming opinions on what the heard on their favourite news channels.

Who cares what apple does, who cares what musk does, since the early 2000’s it’s been adults arguing with each other about who is right.

Do something productive, Help out your local homeless, shovel a neighbours driveway, help a senior pack their groceries in their car if y’all can actually get away from acting like children for 10 minutes.

Why should we block holocaust (I assume) denial, threats of violence, or pornography? Do you fear them?

Do you? It is the National Socialist German Workers Party. Socialism is left wing. It’s right there in the name.

If you think the Nazi's were left wing socialists you have zero clue. When Hitler took over the party the socialists left the party and formed the 'Black Front'. Hitler despised left wing ideology. He kept the NAZI party name because it was good marketing.

The term was as a reference to opposing Marxism Socialism, and was an attempt to 'redefine' socialism. . They were not actually socialist. It was designed to bring Germany together in a way that both rejects socialism and capitalism (capitalism isn’t left or right wing either). I can understand your confusion, but Nazism, is and never was a left wing group and clearly in the far right wing camp.

Unlike others, I’m not here to put you down. Just correcting what is a common misperception.

I think it means in the sense that it’s a widely available and accessible place for people to express and consume and discuss ideas, opinions, and current events. It is the “town market square”…

And in that regard, no it’s not a “right”, per se… but it is a place that if one were to be kicked off and banned, it makes a leper of that person/entity and they have in way effectively been completely removed from society.

And thus, the “rights” taken away.

I guess it could be compared to going to prison, where you lose the freedom and ability to do many things and converse however you please with whomever. 🤷‍♂️
