Aren't these statements coming from the very CEO who recently made every single patent Tesla owned public domain just a few short months ago so other companies would jump in, leading to an EV revolution? You'd think that he'd love a company like Apple producing EV cars. These comments obviously speak to a man who has a recent personal beef with Apple.

And to those who say "Apple should just buy Tesla" you seem to have little knowledge in business affairs. Tesla currently has a market cap of 30B. To buy them out, Apple would have to shell out around 40B, and for a company many billions in debt. If Apple can't come up with a way to mass produce a vehicle of their own for less than 40B, there's no reason to chase that market. In reality, I bet "Project Titan" runs up a bill far under 20B before they feel they have a viable automobile.

No matter how successful Tesla is, or how great their cars are, Musk's comments display a lack of class.
Right because golden boy Steve never talked about other companies like this, right?

And lets be real, what of the "shots" he fired at Apple's products were particularly wrong? Apple Watch is not a success on the scale they wanted it to be, the Pencil and the iPad Pro are not beacons of innovation.

But yet its ok when phil schiller gets on stage and says "Can't innovate my ass". Cue the double standards..
How is (albeit crudely) saying "we can innovate" the same as pointing out that someone else cannot? I'm not saying No one from Apple has done this, I just don't think your example applies.

How is that a double standard? One of them is being condescending and insulting and the other one is defending allegations against them.

Cars aren't the future. That's the real issue. Cars aren't the future. Mass transit is the future. Anything else is a temporary diversion from reaching that future. It's a complete utter waste of resources.
You are short sighted. Cars of the future will BE mass transit when driven by cloud computation. Only, they will also be able to detach from the main artery when necessary and go to individual destinations, all while maintaining personal cabin space. The mass transit you are thinking about is most certainly not the future. If you haven't noticed most cities have no more space left to build train or tram routes.

I guess you're right... it's too much to ask of people in Musk's (or Jobs's) position to act graciously because they don't have to.

Apple is actively trying to hire away Tesla's talent with their unlimited bank account

Obviously he's going to be upset

Because apple for its entire existence has made computers, tablets, etc. The whole apple army comes into the room as "We will build the worlds best car" etc. Have they made a car before? They have not. So essentially selling wolf tickets is not a good thing until one can actually produce something they are arrogant about.

Tesla can innovate as far as making cars. Can apple? Well until they produce something they need to realize they have alot to prove.

Um, ok.... so how is it a double standard again?

Although there is always talk of oil going away, there is actually more than enough oil for quite some time (I spent 6 years working in the industry). With current gas prices still going down, the demand for electric is also down. This could change in a few years, but to me, the replacement battery cost, lack of enough compatible charging stations and the initial price of these vehicles, IMHO, still make it a niche product.

Also, as other have stated, Tesla is bleeding cash.

I like what Tesla has done so far, but surprised at Mr. Musk's tone. It sounds like frustration, and perhaps desperation? I wonder if maybe Tesla sales have slowed with the current low price of gas?

Oh great, now that the price has come down, earth must be making oil faster than we can use it. Too bad even if that was true we'd s
Musk should be more concerned about Apple mounting an aggressive buyout of Tesla.
The most innovative thing they've come up with is the "PowerWall", that alone would be a tasty purchase for Apple.
How much VC has Musk raised for Tesla and how long can they haemorrhage cash?
Apple's sitting like a Dragon on a gold pile and Musk looking like Bilbo Baggin's.
Tesla being absorbed by Apple makes perfect sense for the ambitions of both.

lol and lets not forget what happen at the end of that movie

I guess the guy can be a douche if he wants to be, he is an innovator just like Jobs was, is disrupting an industry just like Jobs did...and acts like a douche....Just like Jobs did

Tesla and Solar City are only successful because of massive government subsidies. The innovation is great, but it is possible because it's bein propped up by taxpayers.

whats tesla really done thats really so great? as a die hard auto enthusiast, the cars are ass-ugly, and the enormous touch screen is gimmicky and a hindrance to use while driving. all theyve done is create the first electric car that most people (myself excepted) dont think looks like total ******* and gets decent range. they do catch on fire occasionally though?

they have some nice battery technology, but its just another electric car with poor styling that screams upcoming facelift built right in that wont age well at all.

id hate to see apple make a car, but apple turns a profit while tesla doesnt and never has and wont for the forseeable future. as someone else said, you cant hemhorrage VC cash forever, eventually you have to turn a real profit, and writing endless checks to make the biggest factory on the planet when you have virtually no market share isnt how you get rich. you dont get rich by writin' checks after a certain point.

*Facepalm* not another one of these car enthusiasts that thinks their moving Molotov doesn't catch fire. A ICE car has much more likely to catch fire. Oh and before you think I'm some EV hippie, I love my 560hp ICE car very much. Just tired of hearing these out dated information blurts. Is the Model S the best looking car on the market, of course not, there's thousands of choices, the Model S is hardly ugly.

Can you give me one single quote by an Apple exec who comes across as "arrogant" in an interview about making cars?

What is your source for the "we will build the worlds best car" quote?
