The Tesla sedan out performs V8 supercars (proper race cars developed over decades) in their track form, while using aircon and playing the stereo.

They are nothing to be scoffed at.

Tesla have a huge headstart (lol headscarf) though I'm thinking Apple are going to be gunning for the autonomous car market.

I no not of one person I know who owns a Tesla or has traveled on a rocket, I know personally of hundreds if not thousands of people who's life has been enriched by the iPhone!!!
Pretty small view of the world IMHO. We owe a lot of stuff to NASA and rocket scientists. So does Apple. Some of these affect the iPhone directly and some indirectly.

10 tech breakthroughs to thank the space race for

Damn it's about to be thermonuclear war between these two companies in a few years when the Apple car is out.

What people don't realize about Apple is that they can take an existing product that works perfectly fine and just make it much better than what was out there before.

They did it with the music player, phone, computer, tablet, watch, tv. How many of these products by competitors have they seriously hurt or put out of business. While I don't believe they can shut down Tesla, they can seriously hurt the car business when they enter the market.

There's a huge difference between consumer electronics and cars. I don't think Musk is remotely concerned about Apple's car ambitions. If anything, I think he'd welcome them as a player. He's very much about building a viable electric car market, not being the only game in town.

Tesla will have an under $50K offering before Apple brings anything to market. And other car companies will offer more electrics. It will be interesting to see how Apple differentiates itself. Pretty hard to improve upon Tesla when it comes to software and user experience. As a longtime Apple customer and investor, I'm not very excited at the thought of an Apple car. I just don't see the Apple brand in the automotive space.

Has he ever held an Apple Watch? I was a little skeptical of it too at first, but I actually found myself wanting one when I was checking it out at Best Buy the other day. Still going to wait a few generations, but still.

What a shocker, a CEO has a huge ego. There is a long line of companies that have underestimated Apple in the past.

Well, Steve made Apple the most profitable company ever, Elon is taking on the space industry and cars. While Elon's companies are not as successful in the profitability sense as Apple, both accomplished amazing things. Elon really has tech to change the world.

Not sure what Tim has done... Close to what Balmer did with MS.. Elon is just taking Jabs at Tim.. No one should underestimate Apple though.. Even with a lame duck CEO as Tim

Or maybe they leave because they're fed up of working for a ****.

+ Haven't Tesla's cars all be crap so far? Every time they were on Top Gear they just got ripped into for how unpractical they're.
you need to go check ur sources, go read up on the court briefs on that whole issue, the top gear episode been written before they even got the car. and no tesla's car is pretty amazing, it gets of the line like a gtr.

How do you suppose we arrived at the iPhone? People bought really really expensive computers back in the 80s and 90s and drove the costs down as the market matured. That's what is happening with Tesla. The people buying those cars today are driving innovation and making it possible for Tesla to bring a more affordable vehicle to market. Look at the electric car market. It's in its infancy. The iPhone is the culmination of decades of consumer electronics development.

It is obvious Musk would be concerned about Apple becoming Tesla's competitor. If Apple starts making vacuum cleaners James Dyson would be concerned too.

Whenever a company with the size of Apple enters the market, it is not something you can scoff at.

With that said, Elon Musk is not like Ballmer. He is a visionary with amazing drive. It would be an uphill battle for Apple to go against Tesla.

Stated like a scholar and a gentlemen.... If only there was a super like button.

Ignoring what Musk said for a sec, are you telling me you take Top Gear seriously?
That is easily the most contrived and idiotic show on TV.

Tesla and Apple are both lacking in innovation. 1323 lb battery - seriously where's the innovation there with piling on a ton of batteries? I don't think the next big game changing innovation will come out of these two companies.

Why are electric cars more meaningful? I get a lot more done and a lot more value out of my "iToys" then I get out of my car. My car gets me from place to place (and costs me a fortune at that. It sits most of the day. Have to pay insurance and upkeep). That's it. The "iToys" let me communicate, create, monitor my health, etc. I honestly don't give a damn about Tesla or Apple cars but the notion that electric cars are meaningful in some way is silly.
If you look at which is going to help humanity more:

1. Electric cars should eventually replace gasoline-powered cars, thus reducing energy usage and pollution. They are also more reliable, so if the high costs of electric vs gasoline are overcome by the industry (ICE cars have been refined and mass-produced over many years vs electric), they should cost less in the end. Lastly, they're safer, again because they're more reliable. I'm only worried about ICE cars dying off because they're way more fun. Same with self-driving cars; I acknowledge that they're better, but there is definitely culture to be lost.

2. Smartphones are useful for communication... which dumbphones could already do. They don't really replace what a PC can do for creation. They just make apps of all sorts more accessible to people. I would argue that they cause more harm than good in the end since so many adults and most of the kids get addicted to using them for silly purposes, and people use them while driving. I often wish they never existed as I get stuck behind some idiot stopped at a green light or see my friend glued to an iPhone screen instead of talking to me. And all Apple does is improve the user experience of smartphones over the years. An iPhone 4 or some crap Samsung phone from 2010 would have been good enough for all utility purposes, and the new "health" features are all bogus. Meanwhile, Tesla tries to improve car technology, which actually means something in real life.

Tesla Model S has gotten the highest rating from consumer reports ever. Don't believe Top Gear. I have seen Model S up close and it is a phenomenal car.

No car accelerates faster. 0 to 60 in 2.8. That guy who called them crap has his head stuck somewhere. I'm sure Consumer Reports gives them perfect scores year after year because they suck.

And people who say building a car isn't rocket science, developing the tech and writing the software isn't exactly child's play. Apple can't even get iCloud working reliably. A car? Self driving? Hmmmm, maybe get iCloud Drive to sync my files first without a million conflicts.

whats tesla really done thats really so great? as a die hard auto enthusiast, the cars are ass-ugly, and the enormous touch screen is gimmicky and a hindrance to use while driving. all theyve done is create the first electric car that most people (myself excepted) dont think looks like total ******* and gets decent range. they do catch on fire occasionally though?

they have some nice battery technology, but its just another electric car with poor styling that screams upcoming facelift built right in that wont age well at all.

id hate to see apple make a car, but apple turns a profit while tesla doesnt and never has and wont for the forseeable future. as someone else said, you cant hemhorrage VC cash forever, eventually you have to turn a real profit, and writing endless checks to make the biggest factory on the planet when you have virtually no market share isnt how you get rich. you dont get rich by writin' checks after a certain point.
wtf are u on. tesla was the few company that managed to pay back the government loans back when obama made the push for electric car company, not only tesla paid it back but they paid it back before the deadline.

idk what enthusiast you are but the model S is one of the more beautiful car on the market, with 0-60 same acceleration as a nissan gtr, and crash rating so high it actually broke the testing machine.

He does have a point. I love OS X, but everything else seems like Apple is trying to go as slow as possible. There is nothing Pro about the iPad Pro. A bigger screen with split screen, and an advanced stylus with keyboard cover does not cut it. It should have been called the iPad Plus. There is nothing innovated about the Apple Watch except that Apple finally made a watch. And iOS is slightly better than Android, which both of those are plenty better than the Windows phone OS. Apple has even regressed is some aspects like how they did with their Mac mini lineup. No longer do they offer quad cores but only dual cores now. I love OS X along with Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro X. But in reality, if it was not for those two professional Apple programs, I would be getting a Surface Book. The hardware looks awesome and from the time I've spent with Windows 10, it already has a workflow a thousand times better than Windows 8. Hopefully Apple will implement Thunderbolt 3 with USB-C in their next Macbook Pro, knowing Apple though, they will milk it for as long as they can. Apple really has not been the same since Jobs died. And Windows is starting to look like Apple did when Jobs came back to the company in the late 90s.

Perfect scores from Consumer Reports. What's not practical? Range? How often do you drive more than 270 miles per day? And when you do, you stop at a free charging station for 30 minutes. Not a big deal. The cars are amazing.

No one drives more than 250 miles daily.
This is fine as long as they always return home. They might not be able to charge for more than 250 miles, though. Still perfectly practical in most cases, like people driving to/from work or school repeatedly. My stupid 2010 Honda Accord only got 14 MPG on my daily commute... false advertising.

250 miles = 4 hours of driving 60 miles per hour. i doubt anyone's daily commute is that long. and if you do then shoot you need to move closer to work.
