I don’t hate Musk but man did he even watch any of the event or look into the implementation at all? Not to mention him acting like he cares about privacy is a joke when he is going to be requiring ID verification with an israeli firm that will in all likelihood happily hand over anything and everything to Mossad or CIA. Arguably he should be excited at the prospect of getting his AI as an option for iPhone in the near future (even if it is trash)

“Privacy protections are built in when accessing ChatGPT within Siri and Writing Tools—requests are not stored by OpenAI, and users’ IP addresses are obscured. “

I don’t think we have to be Elon fanboys to acknowledge a germ of concern here: For example in the quote above: “requests are not stored by OpenAI…” but are they stored by a third party analytics firm at OpenAI’s directive? And, IP addresses are “obscured”… I don’t think that’s a term of art in information security, is it? Are they masked? De-identified ? Deleted? What is “obscured“, exactly?

it might all be hunky-dorey… but the behavior of “Big AI” thus far doesn’t inspire confidence.

Because it's a giant data vacuum built off of stolen data, and has been shown to regurgitate 'anonymized' data previously.
I still don’t see how this has any kind of risk to his companies just by having an iPhone with chat GPT integrated. Does he think chat GPT has a mind of its own and with automatically gather data from his computers, record audio and take video recordings or something? It just doesn’t make sense.

I mean, it's not like Elon is ever one to spend 30 seconds researching stuff after he hears a catchy sound-bite. Who knows, if he didn't get kicked from the board of OpenAI for poaching researches to work at Tesla, maybe he'd still have a bit stake there instead of burning money and Twitter/X.
it's already been reported he left because he believe OpenAI wouldn't get to AGI without major hundred billion dollar investments.

Doesn't matter I don't own or will own any of his products anytime soon. Full EV is just not economical to us making less than 6 figures. CA infrastructure can't even handle it. Between A/C's, EV's, and AI servers there's not enough energy production. Where is all that going to come from. Magic? Hybrid is more practical.

Why does Elon run companies? Why not just have an AI do it? Same with Sam… I don’t understand the necessity of their involvement. Surely they don’t think they’re actually contributing anything of value at this point right?

Musk knows more about ai and privacy in computing than all the collective human intelligence on this board times 1000000 (just used my new iPad calculator to do that!) AI in infosec departments is a top three concern and managing its implications in the corporate world is in its nascence. I’d listen to Musk on this before I would the late night infomercial guy with the 45% margin running Apple.

He has a point. How can we verify that our data won’t be made accessible to OpenAI? I trust Apple. I don’t trust OpenAI.
then you can trust Apple’s contract with OpenAI and with it’s enforcement of the privacy stipulations. Apple has some pretty good lawyers who will have covered every aspect to Apple’s satisfaction. Apple doesn’t want any kind of privacy scandal because of this. They will be paranoid and aggressive about it.

AI isn't yet to the point where it can write itself and train itself. Eventually it will get there. What we call AI today won't be considered even proto-AI in the future.

Elon Musk has threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies over Apple’s newly announced ChatGPT integration.

Apple Intelligence in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia allows Siri to utilize ChatGPT to handle complex queries, but only when explicit user permission is provided. The feature is designed to provide users with richer, more contextual responses without requiring them to open the ChatGPT app.

During Apple's keynote event, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, emphasized that users will have full control over when ChatGPT is used and that data shared with OpenAI would not be logged or stored. "You are in control over when ChatGPT is used and will be asked before any of your information is shared," Federighi said.

Despite these assurances, Musk expressed strong opposition to the integration on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). Musk said, "If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation." He continued, "Visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage." He also repeatedly questioned Apple's ability to ensure data security, stating, "Apple has no clue what's actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They're selling you down the river."

Apple and OpenAI have both emphasized that user data will only be shared with explicit consent and that these interactions are designed to be secure. OpenAI noted in a new blog post that "requests are not stored by OpenAI, and users' IP addresses are obscured." Users can also choose to connect their ChatGPT accounts to access paid features, but this is an opt-in feature.

Apple has been clear in its messaging that the new AI capabilities are designed with user privacy at the core. Apple's approach leverages a combination of on-device processing and cloud computing, ensuring that data is not stored in the cloud. Apple's integration of ChatGPT into its operating systems is part of a broader strategy to enhance the AI capabilities of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

I detest Musk but he is correct in this. His motivations, however, are suspect since he himself is not trustworthy.

Sam is absolutely contributing. If it wasn’t for him there would be no commercial ChatGPT and OpenAI would just be a big nerd-fest research project that only a select few in the public would ever get off the waiting list to use because there would be no server infrastructure.

You might ask Apple’s executives and lawyers if they were comfortable with this deal if their contract didn’t cover those situations?
