The same people that celebrated “threads” taking down X are thinking Elon is just a hater.

It’s okay to dislike the guy but also take what he says into consideration. So many people acting like cult members.

$100 says Apple panicked because they are behind on the AI curve and their iPhone sales are dropping so they agreed to work with ChatGP until they build their own.
I will take the $100, Apple has been publishing open source libraries and papers on device computing for LLM. ReALM puchished few months back had better score than ChatGPT4 in local context. There are many layers to AI, on device OS level tasks using Siri, and those “Do you want to search web for more details”..

IIRC, Craig in Keynote said they’re working to bring other AI models to Apple Intelligence. Does that not apply here or have I misremembered something? Would he still ban them if they used Grok? (If that’s how it works) I don’t think it’d be impossible to profile-lock the model selection or too difficult?

Musk’s quote: (and he’s right)

CRUCIAL QUOTE

“It’s patently absurd that Apple isn’t smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security & privacy!” Musk said on X. “Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They’re selling you down the river.”

He has a point. How can we verify that our data won’t be made accessible to OpenAI? I trust Apple. I don’t trust OpenAI.
If I had to guess, I’d say Apple put in some strict requirements regarding privacy of user data into their contract with OpenAI, complete with severe repercussions if OpenAI fails to meet those requirements.

Furthermore, I’m looking at this like the relationship Apple had with Google early on for Maps. Eventually Apple will be running their own models all the way down, and hopefully that rollout goes a lot smoother than the Apple Maps rollout.

This is all just a guess though. I’m sure we will start learning details soon enough.

It's currently number 2 under Reddit. And X deliberately reclassified their app from "social media" to "news" because someone who shall remain nameless was butthurt about not seeing his app crack the top 10 anymore.

Interesting... I guess reddit made the same decision to classify as "news" instead of "social media" for the same butthurt reasons then.

Also X is #1 [above Reddit] on the iPhone App Store under Top Free "news". I checked before my original post and I'm looking at it now. It's #1.

Weird how much people even care. Like... some of you actually think the guy is a loser when he has 11 children, multi-generational wealth and provides employment to ~171,000 people. Musk has won at life on the grandest of scales and people here hate him because of some really misguided political beliefs.

Apple wants to make other LLMs available. Perhaps they should strike a deal for XAI.

Thanks I didn't know that. From what I've seen in the keynote it looked like every time you need to opt-out by tapping "No" or can you disable OpenAI for good in the Settings ?
I haven’t played with beta, and not sure about the actual implementation. But Apple did mention the users will need to explicitly consent when using ChatGPT, and will know when Siri is directing the users. I hope they will have easy toggle to turn it off and on.

Elon Musk has threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies over Apple’s newly announced ChatGPT integration.

elon-musk.jpg

Apple Intelligence in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia allows Siri to utilize ChatGPT to handle complex queries, but only when explicit user permission is provided. The feature is designed to provide users with richer, more contextual responses without requiring them to open the ChatGPT app.

During Apple's keynote event, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, emphasized that users will have full control over when ChatGPT is used and that data shared with OpenAI would not be logged or stored. "You are in control over when ChatGPT is used and will be asked before any of your information is shared," Federighi said.

Despite these assurances, Musk expressed strong opposition to the integration on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). Musk said, "If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation." He continued, "Visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage." He also repeatedly questioned Apple's ability to ensure data security, stating, "Apple has no clue what's actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They're selling you down the river."

Apple and OpenAI have both emphasized that user data will only be shared with explicit consent and that these interactions are designed to be secure. OpenAI noted in a new blog post that "requests are not stored by OpenAI, and users' IP addresses are obscured." Users can also choose to connect their ChatGPT accounts to access paid features, but this is an opt-in feature.

Apple has been clear in its messaging that the new AI capabilities are designed with user privacy at the core. Apple's approach leverages a combination of on-device processing and cloud computing, ensuring that data is not stored in the cloud. Apple's integration of ChatGPT into its operating systems is part of a broader strategy to enhance the AI capabilities of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

He's just butthurt that no one cares about his crock of Grok.

Apple should have known featuring Mach-E during the keynote would set him off.

This is what everyone keeps saying. I’ll be sure to keep your prescience in mind 40 years from now when we still have CEOs and everyone else saying “just wait till next year!”
Unlikely to take anywhere near that long.

I don't think anyone really knows - but the fact is the industry has advanced *incredibly* in the last three years.

The "transformer" concept was an unexpected discovery - they were working on a way to translate text from one language to another and it wasn't really all that impressive at that task, slightly more accurate but at the same time far more expensive and probably a waste of money.

The research was published with no expectations it would go anywhere, but then people took the same technique and applied it to more useful tasks and it has repeatedly proven itself in areas that nobody thought it could ever be used.

Transformers are the exact opposite of vapourware. It has been more like "we might be able to do X in 10 years and then a month later never mind, we can do it right now". There is definitely still a lot of work and improvement needed before we have a "General AI" that can do almost any task, but I wouldn't bet on it being a distant future thing.

I mean, Apple uses AWS servers. How do you think they manage that? Musk is fear mongering here. I can guarantee you that if Grok was chosen, he’d be telling us all how his is the safest and most secure and that he will be completely open and transparent with how the data is used and protected. Though first he might want to hire more staff…

I imagine there will be a switch to disable ChatGPT, and that it will be disable-able using policy profiles for corporate devices. I'm sure Elon has nothing to worry about.

oh nooooooo what will i do if i won’t be able to use his dried up app?? ya know, the one that everyone has to refer to by what it was called years ago when people used to care about it because he’s so dumb he threw away a well known brand and replaced it with something a corny 12 year old boy would think was cool :’(

if myspace announces they’re blocking ios devices too i think apple’s a goner :’( :’(

There are a lot of people who think it's going to happen a lot earlier than that.

I tend to agree with Chief scientist at Meta, who I interact with on twitter/X. General AI is probably not possible with transformers. It needs lot more intelligence and ability tHan predicting next token based on training data. The interesting research on it is more specialized engines. Very soon the training data saturation will hit the transformers. That said, the progress on AI is way out there, and can’t be put back in to the bottle. It will evolve but most likely not AGI.

Musk is so misinformed. The following is from Apple web site (https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2024/06/introducing-apple-intelligence-for-iphone-ipad-and-mac/):

"Privacy protections are built in for users who access ChatGPT — their IP addresses are obscured, and OpenAI won’t store requests. ChatGPT’s data-use policies apply for users who choose to connect their account."

Hey Musk, I hope you take the time to understand fully what's being offered by Apple before you pull the trigger and make hasty decisions for your employees.

Apple's likley response: Try it, try banning it from not only from your company, but from Tesla and even on X app. The FTC and Justice Department will be breathing down fire with lawsuit and congressional hearing in a hurry for anti-trust case, just like Microsoft.

Do you guys know what he's trying to say? Think of the developer code and communications that goes on at Tesla for example, a company which has exceptional technologies that other automakers could only dream of having. I can understand his concern for privacy if his staff have iPhones and its tranmitting data.

Having said that if he just used an MDM for all of his companies then they could block this out of all the staff devices and there isn't even a reason for concern about this.

Apple already uses lot of AI with in the OS with its custom models. What Apple announced today is basically taking out copying ,pasting, and prompting for AI either in Image, text, and other tasks. Apples on device models and their cloud should handle most of those tasks. ChatGPT is for more generic Siri” do you want to search internet for more information”. I guess you don’t quite understand nuances in AI/ML field.
