If any company can provide security with ChatGPT, it’s Apple. But still, I will DEFINITELY be opting OUT of any A.I. integration with my iPhone. Especially as an artist, A.I. doesn’t sit well with me. Hard pass.

They are great cars (well apart from the plain awful CyberTruck which still looks like a joke bet went too far).
But Musk is an idiot. His behaviour killed Twitter value. His sacking staff because he didnt like the team leader... beyond foolish. He needs to go.

Tim Apple sell us down the river? Say it ain't so? Say no to OS level ChatGPT integration
did you read the info released? It will explicitly ask you if you want to use ChatGPT, it anonymizes you and doesnt store data...

the on phone stuff will be just integrated and work without data leaving your phone.
sounds like a sensible approach and stays with the privacy/security line Apple has long pushed.

An anyone who says "Tim Apple" ... nuff said ;)

Oh ban Apple devices? Might as well force the closure of twitter (currently known as X) as retaliation.
One Thing I have to admit though is AI is scary, indeed scary.

Do I get a tin foil hat at the door too?

I know you're joking, but he's not wrong. I can trigger siri by saying 'seriously'. I can also trigger Siri by turning on the faucet in my laundry which my watch thinks sounds like the word Siri.

Entire conversations can be sent to Open AI before you've even realised that Siri has been activated, because Siri doesn't always make a noise or vibrate when it is activated.

Open AI employees will be able to store and access those conversations (or transcripts) and they can be used to train AI models - even if they tell you they're not doing it. Their current TOS allow them to.

Google Employees accessed Nintendo's private files and leaked information about games. Microsoft's Recall function was shown to be storing information in plain text and malware tools immediately popped up to access it. Adobe changed their TOS to allow employees and AI to not just access, but claim ownership over any data stored in the cloud - a serious enough risk to our business that we've immediately stopped using Premiere and have switched to Davinci Resolve.

Musk is definitely a grifter and makes a lot of promises he cannot keep, but on this issue, he's right.

Yah I wouldn't trust OpenAI AT ALL.

Sam Altman is possibly worse than Elon Musk. Both are horrible tech bros, with zero concern for user privacy.

He does not have a point. ChatGPT is just integrated into Siri the same way Google is when it searches the web. OpenAI is not involved in any of the other features at all.
The issue is OpenAI will use your anonymous data you send it to create updated models that copies your work.

You better make sure nothing you send it contains any original thoughts or ideas or creations, otherwise OpenAI will just use it to train your competitors.

It's a huge Intellectual Property violator.

Elon Musk has threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies over Apple’s newly announced ChatGPT integration.

Apple Intelligence in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia allows Siri to utilize ChatGPT to handle complex queries, but only when explicit user permission is provided. The feature is designed to provide users with richer, more contextual responses without requiring them to open the ChatGPT app.

During Apple's keynote event, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, emphasized that users will have full control over when ChatGPT is used and that data shared with OpenAI would not be logged or stored. "You are in control over when ChatGPT is used and will be asked before any of your information is shared," Federighi said.

Despite these assurances, Musk expressed strong opposition to the integration on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). Musk said, "If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation." He continued, "Visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage." He also repeatedly questioned Apple's ability to ensure data security, stating, "Apple has no clue what's actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They're selling you down the river."

Apple and OpenAI have both emphasized that user data will only be shared with explicit consent and that these interactions are designed to be secure. OpenAI noted in a new blog post that "requests are not stored by OpenAI, and users' IP addresses are obscured." Users can also choose to connect their ChatGPT accounts to access paid features, but this is an opt-in feature.

Apple has been clear in its messaging that the new AI capabilities are designed with user privacy at the core. Apple's approach leverages a combination of on-device processing and cloud computing, ensuring that data is not stored in the cloud. Apple's integration of ChatGPT into its operating systems is part of a broader strategy to enhance the AI capabilities of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

Twitter is just a porn app at this stage and Apple should just pull it from the App Store as it breaches their terms of service.

I still don’t see how this has any kind of risk to his companies just by having an iPhone with chat GPT integrated. Does he think chat GPT has a mind of its own and with automatically gather data from his computers, record audio and take video recordings or something? It just doesn’t make sense.
Companies are banning ChatGPT because OpenAI will use your data to train new models that copies your intellectual property, thus helping your competitors.

then you can trust Apple’s contract with OpenAI and with it’s enforcement of the privacy stipulations. Apple has some pretty good lawyers who will have covered every aspect to Apple’s satisfaction. Apple doesn’t want any kind of privacy scandal because of this. They will be paranoid and aggressive about it.
Would Apple's contract with OpenAI prevent them from using your anonymously sent data to train new models, thus copying your ideas and intellectual property?

THAT is the core problem with OpenAI and Sam Altman. They don't believe you have intellectual property rights. They consider all ideas you have to be their ideas for copying.

If he really wants to take a stand, block iOS from anything other than basic Bluetooth connectivity with Teslas moving forward. Best his shareholders would just love that.

It means the requests are proxied through Apple's servers. So end user IP addresses are never provided to OpenAI.

Similar to iCloud Private Relay.
That's nice and all but let's say you send a picture of a family member to ChatGPT asking it to find a matching prom dress for her high school prom with a theme of The Little Mermaid?

Is that picture going to be used to train AI models for nefarious purposes, like learning where this person is located based on where the prom with that theme happened this year? And now we know where she is located, ChatGPT can also find out who her friends are in high school, since OpenAI scrapes social media stories. And now we find her name as well, meaning we can determine her life and credit history and so on.

That's what Apple has said they won't do for their user's requests.

Now you may not believe them but I trust Apple not to throw away all their reputation by not checking.
Apple specifically did not say this in their keynote. They only stated they are opt-in and anonymous, not what happens to that data after it was sent to OpenAI.

Glad people can make light of all this and poke at Twitter, Musk, and Apple. At the end of the day, his logic is sound.

Musk is so misinformed. The following is from Apple web site (https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2024/06/introducing-apple-intelligence-for-iphone-ipad-and-mac/):

"Privacy protections are built in for users who access ChatGPT — their IP addresses are obscured, and OpenAI won’t store requests. ChatGPT’s data-use policies apply for users who choose to connect their account."

Hey Musk, I hope you take the time to understand fully what's being offered by Apple before you pull the trigger and make hasty decisions for your employees.
This doesn't mean their requests won't be transformed for use as immediate training data.

Like Musk said, you have no idea what happens to your data after it's sent to OpenAI. They could use your data to train models, stealing your intellectual property to use against you.

This is something that OpenAI is well known to do.
