The eMac is a great machine for a great price--and Apple's only low-end offering that includes a display. Maybe it just wasn't selling, though, with the Mini.

In which case, a low-end Apple 15" LCD or something would be nice to offer. Otherwise there's no more "one stop shopping" for a low-end Mac.

Is it still available for education?

I know there's the Intel stuff coming, but that's not for about 12 months! 😡
Sooner than that. Intel Macs will be available by June 06 at the LATEST, and PowerBooks have to be among the first models to make the change.

If it really has been discontinued the RIP eMac.

Mine has been a faithful servant since I bought it in January 2004, and the eMac is the best computer I have owned and I've owned a few.

I don't understand if Apple have discontinued it why they have, it was the stop gap between the expensive iMac and slower Mac Mini.

Also seems its bye bye to the CRT again then too eh Steve?

Can't say I'll miss the eMac, but I wonder what Apple's long term strategy is on this. What are they going to approach the educational institutions with instead? Or will everything be portables now in the form of iBooks?

Good Riddance...

You got the mini that does as much or more now, get a monitor for $120 and you got something better than the emac now.

Have you actually ever used a mini? 😉 My friend just got a new mini and I can tell you that my year-old eMac out performs the mini hands down. While the specs may look very similar on paper... there is a big gap in real world performance. And besides, by the time you buy an Apple keyboard, mouse and a decent monitor the mini costs as much as the eMac. I hate to see the eMac go without something new coming in to fill that performance/price ratio gap.

I hope your spot on! But would they [Apple] risk a 32bit CPU for their PRO model laptop??? Unless there is something they're not letting on??? An update has to come soon though!

Please wake me up when they do release something interesting.

Cheers

eMac Discontinued?

Interestingly, my district's institutional page still shows the eMacs, but they do not show for individual purchase. My guess is they are taking the eMac back to educational institution purchase only.

The only reason Apple haven't dropped the eMac is because Kids & LCD/TFT screens don't mix. I remember that was Steve's reason for bringing it out, in his own words though of course.

LOL

You can buy an 8 pack of emacs for $5000. LOL

Yea, and then you plug in a USB keyboard and USB mouse, and voila....no more USB ports....that is brilliant.

Uhhh, the Apple keyboard provides 2 extra USB ports.. That is if you use the Apple stuff.. If not, USB hubs are pretty cheap, or you could just get the Mini Mate..

It would be all well and good to replace the emac with a Mac Mini if the Mac Minis weren't so dissapointing. They suffer from the worst case of spinning beach ballitis since the Performa...

The eMacs were a good choice for small businesses who cant afford to pay $1200 for an iMac but want something a little better than the Minis. I can only hope they offer a souped up Mini or a stripped down iMac to fill the void.

Well. This Sucks! I have been saving for an eMac but there goes that. Well its there lost profits

I don't like the iMac G5 way to much empty space under the screen looks like it has a big chin, plus i just don't need what the iMac offers and i can't afford it. i would have been able to get an eMac before the end of the year but now i will have to wait till February before i could get an iMac (witch i don't really want). And if I'm waiting that long i will just wait till the intel macs come out.

you watch, it'll be the powerbook next....

I think you may be right. I mean, I'm not sure why they have them up at all anymore. I CAN'T believe that they are selling many, AS they havn't been upgraded since we had a man on the moon (or so it seems)

When they did their financial report yesterday they did not give the breakdown on portables between the ibook and the powerbooks. I would bet that the ibooks are out selling the powerbooks at this point. Who without being in a state of desperation would buy one at this juncture?

So, Steve and company, if you are listening - Stop playing with us, and take those once proud powerbooks down from your website, until you can give them an upgrade worthy of their heritage. And no Steve, you do not have to wait for Intel! 😡 😱 😡 😱

Too bad, we have 3 eMacs in the family and they deliver what we expect from them. They are great for children and the like.

Way to long for a decent update. Also, many people DO NOT WANT the first intel macs. Not by a long shot. Too much software to change over.
