Good Riddance...

You got the mini that does as much or more now, get a monitor for $120 and you got something better than the emac now.

Good riddance to the eMac too (you've had a whale of a time). Funny-I have Green Day's Good Riddance on my original 4th gen iPod (very appropiate song)

i will miss the emac. solid dependable affordable machine. oh well now we have the mini. 😱
But the mini is nowhere near as good of a deal as the eMac. The mini has a much slower video card, it accepts less RAM, has no display, has a much slower hard drive, and it's not all that much cheaper.

I think you may be right. I mean, I'm not sure why they have them up at all anymore. I CAN'T believe that they are selling many, AS they havn't been upgraded since we had a man on the moon (or so it seems)

When they did their financial report yesterday they did not give the breakdown on portables between the ibook and the powerbooks. I would bet that the ibooks are out selling the powerbooks at this point. Who without being in a state of desperation would buy one at this juncture?

So, Steve and company, if you are listening - Stop playing with us, and take those once proud powerbooks down from your website, until you can give them an upgrade worthy of their heritage. And no Steve, you do not have to wait for Intel! 😡 😱 😡 😱

that's funny, I thought this was a thread about the emac?

pretty much everything I feel has been stated already: 7200RPM drives, 2 gigs of ram, radeon 9600. Blows the mini out of the water, and the price was better to boot.

In other news, as has been stated, they're still for sale, but only to educational institutions. No more non institutional edu sales - which is where the emac was originally introduced, and designed for.

I'd be upset, but you can still pick up the refurbs. It was (is) a great mac for the money, despite what some people think...

Yea, and then you plug in a USB keyboard and USB mouse, and voila....no more USB ports....that is brilliant.

Except for the 2 USB ports on the keyboard? Or the USB hubs which are common place?

I hope your spot on! But would they [Apple] risk a 32bit CPU for their PRO model laptop???
Of course, in a heartbeat. As long as it's faster (which Pentium M is, and Yonah REALLY will be) than the 32-bit CPUs they are CURRENTLY using in their pro laptops 🙂

Uhhhhh....that would leave one free usb port.

Usb mouse plugs into keyboard?

Uhhh, the Apple keyboard provides 2 extra USB ports.. That is if you use the Apple stuff..

Only on the Apple keyboard, and the Mac mini doesn't come with that. Apple advertises the Mini as bringing your own keyboard...and I've never seen a 3rd party keyboard or a PC keyboard with USB built into the keyboard.

If not, USB hubs are pretty cheap, or you could just get the Mini Mate..
Exactly my point. You shouldn't have to buy a computer and then buy every accessory known to man just to get to use it. That is why the eMac was great (better than the Mini).

Spot on, and so many other mice I've tried in the back of the apple keyboards complain it is too low poer to cope with it, so you are stuck to using either an apple mouse or both usb ports.

How about an apple relaunch soon? Mini machine, maxi functionality.

There's ZERO question that the eMac had advantages over other choices. Real benefits.

And other Macs (like the Mini) have THEIR advantages too. Of course.

It's not even worth debating. They BOTH had their reason to exist.

If the eMac no longer sells, then its advantages no longer have enough sales value to keep it around. So be it.

Or maybe something else is on the way... ?

I've never understood how a product you don't want--but that other people DO want--hurts you. Many people on these forums seem to feel some kind of pain at the thought of any products existing other than the one they personally choose to buy.

But whatever that pain may be, it seems to be over now 🙂

And besides, by the time you buy an Apple keyboard, mouse and a decent monitor the mini costs as much as the eMac.

I think people that already have those items can still say they got a better deal with the mini. Even using a keyboard, monitor, mouse toggle switch between a PC and a mini.

I think that if the eMac is discontinued then it should be because the demand is low. The iBook may be good enough to replace the eMac for the educational market. The low-end Mac gamer will be forced to spend more for the iMac. I liked the eMac but hated the CRT size and weight.

Where is the core video on the mini? The hard drive on the mini sucks compared to the emac too. Plus the monitor, keyboard, ....

I don't know about the specs of the "double secret maybe you'll get one maybe you won't" mac mini but I don't think it's much of an improvement....the emac is still a better machine.

Supposedly the drive in the newer mac mini is a 5400rpm drive, so equal with the eMac

Dont knock the eMac

The eMac was/is a great little machine. All-in-one is a GOOD thing for many people. My brother has one thats a few years old and it still works like a champ... its a lot more than an internet appliance (someone mentioned this earlier).

anyways... I'm still not over the lack of PB updates 😡 I think I'll go home and sob... 🙁

Also, I believe a few people have several large helpings of humble-pie to scarf down (regarding the ipod w/video)... seeing that circus get started might cheer me up 😛 j/k

I actually debated buying one simply because of the nice design.. I feel that the mini is more of a gimmick, but I guess sales dictate the model-line, which is a shame for some.

In times much like this I regret having switched to mac, theres suddenly no other options, Im now in Steves command, his word is law and no matter how much I complain in the forums I'll never get myself a new PB, I will just have to buy a Imac and chain myself to a desk.. Before there was no waiting for weeks in hope of a new product, you did this to me Steve, im nothing but a slave now and Im not so sure I like it anymore..

Let's forget about some of the advantages of the eMac that have been stated several times in this thread. Why would anyone be happy that Apple is offering fewer options to consumers?

It seemed like a nice entry machine for PC users who want to go Mac without spending a lot, or for Mac lovers who don't think a hundred bucks here and there is petty change.

their dumping the eMac and bringing back the lamp! Horray! 😀

I can wish can't I?
I'd be up for that one! Mine are starting to feel a little long in the tooth and I don't want to give 'em up.

emacs were always a pretty good deal

im going to miss them

eMacs offered the best performance/price. I recommend them to new switchers always, not the mini, because they are even easier to set up and use.

Sorry to see you go, old friend...

I agree completely. All of apples machines are nice, but they can be a bit upscale/pricy for some people. Although you get what you pay for, many people just cant come up with an extra wad of money and are forced to settle for garbage.
The really sad thing is when people would buy a mac if it were only 200 or 300 cheaper but don't b/c they think they are getting a good deal on a peecee (or really just cant afford that 300 more). In reality the peecee gives them hell and they didn't save 300 bucks, they wasted 800.
The eMac allowed people to get into a mac easily.

I don't see it offered for the regular University Students.

when I clicked on eMac it took me to the education store, but once I entered as a student it's not there. Maybe schools can still buy it though..
