Did you really mean HIGHER ED? To my knowledge, higher ed is college and above. I don't have too much of a problem with higher ed students treating flat panel screens decently. Sure, they might touch them from time to time, but they generally take care of them even in a lab setting.
I also disagree with you on the Mac Mini as being "all but worthless." I have found it to be VERY worth while. One, the size of it (especially compared to the eMac monster) is incredible. Two, it does exactly what I need in most of my situations for my department. Those being: Word/Excel works great, email is awesome, internet is great as well, integrates easily with my Panther server and network home directories, runs some simple database files (local and over a network) with no problems, runs iCal great as well as address book using an ldap server to access other directories across campus.
Understand, I don't think the emac is bad it suites some just right - as does the mac mini.
