...The eMac keeps a foot in the door, the Mac Mini is all but worthless to higher ed as the all-in-one is compelling and the iMac is still too expensive and flat panel screens get touched/cracked/broken by fat fingered kids....

Did you really mean HIGHER ED? To my knowledge, higher ed is college and above. I don't have too much of a problem with higher ed students treating flat panel screens decently. Sure, they might touch them from time to time, but they generally take care of them even in a lab setting.

I also disagree with you on the Mac Mini as being "all but worthless." I have found it to be VERY worth while. One, the size of it (especially compared to the eMac monster) is incredible. Two, it does exactly what I need in most of my situations for my department. Those being: Word/Excel works great, email is awesome, internet is great as well, integrates easily with my Panther server and network home directories, runs some simple database files (local and over a network) with no problems, runs iCal great as well as address book using an ldap server to access other directories across campus.

Understand, I don't think the emac is bad it suites some just right - as does the mac mini.

does anyone know if FrontRow or the remote works for other apple computers besides the new imac? Anyone????

you think it'll be the Powerbook going next? why? that would make me so sad... 🙁

Don't worry, the PowerBook isn't going anywhere - it would mess up Steve's matrix. 😀

Look for PowerBooks updated with 7448s in the next couple weeks - that's my prediction. 😎

People have been saying that for months and we're STILL waiting.

Read the thread title and then read my post (#6) again 🙄. I'm not saying that the PB will be the next updated, I'm saying that it will be the next scrapped. It was an attempt at humour that some people got 😉

what a waisted time for updates

the new intel chips are just around the corner and they update the imac, and is it not slightly cheeper 2?

its a waste of an upgrade why didnt they just wait that little bit longer, keep the emac for now, ok bring in the new ipod and the silly fancy remote with dock, which looks sweet, then you think? mmm its pointless, why not just buy an itrip and tune the radio in to that, that way you have full control over your ipod and music.

but!!!! the only dramatic thing that has happend is to ditch the eMac

any way, i cant wait till the intel mini macs come out, that will be pretty cool.

(p.s. it wasnt a spelling mistake at the top its a metaphor for the fact mac have slimmed the range)

Spot on, and so many other mice I've tried in the back of the apple keyboards complain it is too low poer to cope with it, so you are stuck to using either an apple mouse or both usb ports.

How about an apple relaunch soon? Mini machine, maxi functionality.

What are you talking about? The mini is priced WITHOUT keyboard & mouse. You would prefer Apple to charge you more and get one? Great, order both as you order your mini. Same thing!

Also, what people seem to be failing to notice is that the mini is more expensive than the eMac if you have to buy a keyboard, mouse, and monitor, for which you get a computer that is slower and less expandable.

Well. This Sucks! I have been saving for an eMac but there goes that. Well its there lost profits

I don't like the iMac G5 way to much empty space under the screen looks like it has a big chin, plus i just don't need what the iMac offers and i can't afford it. i would have been able to get an eMac before the end of the year but now i will have to wait till February before i could get an iMac (witch i don't really want). And if I'm waiting that long i will just wait till the intel macs come out.

The eMac refurbs are even better deal, especially if you are somewhat handy.

I bought a refurbished eMac for $549, overclocked it to 1.33GHz (from 1 GHz), added a $50 dual-layer DVD burner, and a 200GB 7200 RPM hard drive. It's not the pinnacle of aesthetic perfection, but being an AIO there is less cable clutter, and it's a great home machine. It's good for all-around tasks, and my 4-year old daughter actually uses it all the time.

But right now, I would say the best deal is the refurbished 1.8 G5 17" iMac ($799). That's really an amazing deal!

eMac is still very much available on the UK store. We just bought one at work - through MacWarehouse - for £399. Somehow that works out cheaper than the entry-level one on the Apple store. Perhaps it's an older model.

EDIT: hmm - okay, the page is there but you can't buy it. Sob 🙁

You all are fools!

New eMacs next Tuesday!

😛

Yeah, I dont know how Apple can walk away from the edu market - hoping schools will get the 17" iMac... Look at the sales for the last quarter for edu.

I think they will either bring out a Mac Mini / LCD new eMac, or do sweet heart bulk buy deals on the 17".

So now, where is the 23" iMac with digital tuner for high end consumers.

Wither the iPod U2

Where's the iPod U2 gone...? amongst all the hoopla of the black iPod video, I miss the little red click wheel. What now is the ugly duckling of the lineup? Having a U2 song play on the iPod Apple Store webpage just isn't the same now is it?

Supposedly the drive in the newer mac mini is a 5400rpm drive, so equal with the eMac

There's still a difference between a 2.5" drive and a 3.5" drive in terms of speed and heat produced.

3.5" drives are preferable.

Good riddance, the eMac was one of Apple's greatest dud. Ugly and with a 60%+ of faulty monitors, that beast had to go.

60% faulty monitor rate? Where the heck did you get THAT? CRTs are so well understood, I'd be surprised by a .6% failure rate. I'd guess that 60% of all LCDs have some issue-- dead/stuck pixels or light spots. Those issues may not lead to a repair, but they probably will be there.
Also, don't forget that, "Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder." I personally think the eMac is quite a bit nicer looking than the iMac G5 is... 🙄

still for sale if your buying for a school so now its back to only for schools

This is great news! eMacs work much better than the iMac G5 edu model. I hope some of these eMacs get 'leaked' to the general public... 😀

and by that you mean that some 60 people not percent, had problems with their crt's. And of course, the only reason that apple ever made it available to non edu customers in the first place is because there was a grey market for emacs. ie, the demand for emacs was so great that apple needed to respond and make it available for the masses.

some failure.

and before it gets said again that the mini's HD is as good as the eMacs...

emac: 7200RPM

I've said it before (in about every emac bashing thread that I've posted in), and I'll say it again: the only people I know who bash the emacs are people who have never used it. These people will say it was slow and ugly, while happily scooping up mac mini's.

Oh, and BTW, it may not look drop dead gorgeous sitting on a stand suspended in mid-air, but when put in a proper desk corner, it looks quite nice. I get compliments from just about all of my windows using friends when they see my emac. It may not have the standard apple panache, but it looks worlds better than a dell...

Idk I think the emac was leaps and bounds better than the mini double video faster and larger hd and I think they look really good large doesnt mean ugly but I liked an earlyier posters idea maybe a slightly higer power and larger mini in lamp mode that would be chill.
