For those who think that the ODD is too outdated to be used in a laptop, read this article:

http://www.geek.com/articles/news/google-restoring-lost-gmail-data-from-tape-backups-2011031/

After that, shut up already - Are you going to stop using google because they back up your information on magnetic tape? Hardly. If you don't like ODD, don't use it and gtfo.

This is just a discussion, you can calm down.

Corporations use tape backup because there a practical reasons for doing so, not because they love old tech. Anyway I don't see what your point is, are you suggesting that Apple revert to magnetic tape in their computers?

Nope, merely suggesting that people need to stop saying that their computer needs apply to everyone. I mean religions do the same thing, but not with technology, but with people. "This god works for me, so you all should worship them". same idea, different context.

I'm amused by *your* lack of education. The correct spelling is "losers." Loose means the opposite of tight, while lose means the opposite of gain, win or find.

You are incorrect about all video/music professionals using "HDD with fast connection like eSATA, USB3 or now Thunderbolt..." and so on. I know, because I'm one myself, and work with many others who use disc media often enough that it would suck to be unable to do so. Clients need and ask for DVDs or Blu-ray discs on a regular basis, which you'd know if you were actually in the business.

You can prove it to yourself by opening your eyes next time you're out in the real world, and observing how many shelves full of disc media are for sale. Do you believe they'd stock all those discs if they weren't selling them? If so, there are other fools in this thread that will welcome you with open arms to their deluded ranks.

They ask for blue-ray and DVDs because it is impractical for them to transfer data by a hard drive. You simply don't carry a hard disc to your client and say something like "allow me to offload the data onto your computer" or something like "Instead of letting you view your data at your own leisure, allow me to take 30 min to an hour of your time so I can dump the data into your computer right now".

Yeah

You want remoove the drive?Ok, give an external drive free of cost on every macbook pro purchase. There i wouldnt mind;).But sincere,it has served me alot. And to wear a separate ODD with me, is also not a nice option. And as people said, MBP is not a MBA, but instead remooveing the ODD, put a dedicated GPU as a MBA version. No ODD is not equal DVD!!! DVD=Digital Video Disc, while ODD means Optical Disc Drive wich is not only related to DVD, but also to BD=Blueray Disc and to HVD=Holographic Versatile Disc;)

You know, for such a cutting edge brand it's amazing to me that Apple still hasn't figured out how to produce a reliable notebook charger. It is hands down the worst product Apple has ever come up with, and at this point I think it's a deliberate scam to rip people off. Horrible design. I just had one die on me after only 6 months. That is complete BS for the amount of money they charge.

The thing is you can debate this as much as you like.
The optical drive in the macbook pro will go.

And there is a very very good chance it will happen with this years refresh. (best case scenario next year) Maybe they will keep one in the 17 inch model for an extra year.

Optical drives and even regular hard drives in laptops will go the way of the floppy drive very soon. They take up to much space, eat too much power, are noisy and error prone. DVD drives also have terrible data density, and are really really slow. The optical disks themselfs are bad for the enviroment as they are often tossed after being used once. In 3 years time they will both be gone in any Apple laptop product (maybe even every apple product)

I can imagine for people who need them for the work don't like this.
And hate the fact that people suggest they are useless.
Because they are not, but they are about to be replaced by flash and fast internet connectivity, like it or not.

I, for one would like a slightly thicker macbook air with a better display
and better graphics, sorry :)

Im currently awaiting the new release myself and depending on changes my solutions varies. Preferrably Id have the ODD removed, BUT, still have room for a second 2,5" HDD, but Im guessing the chances of that are slimmer than CD's themselves... :p If they keep the drive I hope they dont make it too slim to be replaced with a HDD. If I got to choose myself Id as I said remove ODD make room for second drive, and maybe get an extra USB or something :)

But things might go another way, no ODD and room for 1 HDD (more likely) in which case I guess Ill have to turn to a NAS solution for extra storage capacity, as I will definitely get an SSD, but I cant afford more than a 240-256GB...

Either way Im sure it will be a lovely machine and I have full understanding for those who want to keep the ODD and full understanding for wether there really is room for them for much longer.

I'm sure you'll come back with something like, "I take my iPhone" or "My Prius connects to iCloud to stream my music", but you are NOT the majority of people--evidenced by your posting on a techie forum if nothing else.

There are plenty of reasons not to kill the ODD.

I burn CDs to use in my car too. It doesn't mean that for the 99.9% of time i am carrying my macbook pro around NOT burning CDs, that i want to carry a CD drive around.

For the 0.1% of the time I use it, an external drive would be fine.

I'd MUCH rather the space go to a better GPU, better cooling, bigger battery, second motion sensor-equipped drive bay, or something else that I'll actually USE more than 0.1% of the time.

Removing the optical drive from the interior of the machine doesn't mean they will no longer exist. It simply means I won't be carrying one around all the time to the detriment of the performance of the rest of the machine (through less interior space for other more worthy improvements).

Or maybe learn how to do drive sharing on a network?
Agreed. That's the way to go for large storage.

...At least for the content that needs to be available at any time. For example, unwatched films and series. Once watched, free up space by re-encoding (downscaling) and archiving to DVDs.

That's when an ODD (external) is useful. It's not entirely legacy. I don't trust HDDs, much less "the cloud".

That thing must take up 30% of the chassis, or more - it NEEDS to go.

Most definitely.

I still do need the ODD, but certainly not built into a portable machine where space is so precious. I have an external drive for reading/burning DVDs and ripping Blu-Rays. ODD-less laptop or desktop + external ODD = perfect combination.

"Oh the pro machines the pro machines!" you whine - you're very likely not a 'pro' anyway.
Dicking around in photoshop with your sepia toned pictures of your local starbucks coffee house doesn't make you a 'pro' user folks.

Hahaha! This is precisely how I picture the so-called "pros" around here.

This is probably the most downvoted post I've seen in quite some time.

OT: Never!

53 when i down voted him. I must say I'm impressed. I've only managed a pathetic 23 when I trolled some windows using iphone owners in a non iphone owning rage. Very disappointing. My ambition is to make 100 down votes one day.

Everyone, don't forget to down vote the OP.

I really don't care about the ODD, but I hope they don't get rid of the DVD player app. It is so handy for playing ripped movies with subtitles as my hearing is bad these days.

But when people stop needing to read, then you'll have no subtitles!! Oh no!!! ;)

Thank you, thank you, thank you! You sir are the only other one here that seems to understand that if they remove the ODD they will simply take away that space and you will not get it back in the form of another drive bay, SSD, bigger battery, extra ports, etc. To all those that want the ODD to go to make room for something else, I say be careful what you ask for because the likelihood is that you won't get anything in return but a thinner (and possibly hotter) MBP.

Well you never know but as many people say, there is obviously use for the ODD and if decides there not enough use to have an internal for the macbook pro, I doubt that they would think there enough use for an extra HDD or an extra USB port, but all in all its just speculation and Ive been extremely pleased with my mid '09 Mbp 13" and Im fairly sure whatever the upcoming 15" looks/specs it will be a nice sequel to my relatively fresh Mac experience. :)

I agree that whatever Apple comes up with will probably be very nice and a big hit. I was just trying to caution people that are posting that the ODD should go to make room for something else; the ODD may very well be gone in the upcoming update (and I wouldn't miss it myself, an external would be fine with me) but you can bet that you won't get that space filled with something else, just a slimmer MBP.

Indeed, the only thing Id have good use for is another internal HDD and I doubt that will happen, I dont know what the general opinion is but for me extra internal storage space would be valued, and smoother than external/NAS etc etc. But chances for that are slim. My best chance is a drive still in there that is exchangable. Im hoping not to suffer for long though, april april april, pleeeeaaaseeee. :p

As others have mentioned, the ODD days are definitely numbered, and as I have seen mentioned somewhere Mac OS not coming on discs anymore is a rather clear hint to that its in that direction we are headed, how soon remains to be seen.

Its really fun to follow the speculation and rumours though, learning alot about the Mac by doing so, I hope that after purchase ill be sticking around on forums to expand my knowledgebase on the Mbp.

People still think that Apple will include a OD? Seriously? Why is this even a question?

This year the OD is gone, guaranteed. All Macbook Pro's will have SSD's in them as standard. Either all SSD or SSD+HD. Slim not unlike the Air.

Like I said last year 2012 is the year of the SSD. Apple will transition all their products to SSD. HD's will be completely gone either this year or next. OD's are already gone, a done deal. Trust me on this.

You will see in about a month. Guaranteed.

That's a lot of guarantees, sir. You must have some information that no one else has.

I'm guessing he works for apple with all that for sure information... If he's employed by apple, he most likely isn't now...

"Intel will release its Haswell processors from March 2013 onwards, according to a roadmap"

See, this is what I mean.

Should I just wait for Haswell?

Completely agree with the OP.

Loosers are holding us back, where nobody educated or informed uses ODD.

Video/Music professional all use HDD with fast connection like eSata, USB3 or now Thunderbolt, most software suite are pre-installed or downloadable, most movies are rented, streamed or downloaded on Internet, most games are downloaded on services such as Steam...

Unless you are going to cram up a Blu-Ray player (which is unlikely since Apple just released iTunes 1080p and wants to make the MBP thinner), stop whining up loosers

They already made it thinner...its called the MBA. By the way, stop talking about uneducated people when you cant even spell losers correctly.

How does it eat power when its not used? You all said it would be gone last year...the MBA sounds perfect for you.

Nope you should not, cause ivy bridge is a tick plus, while hashwell is a minus tock. means not that bigger improvement as it is with ivy bridge if u come from sandy bridge at least. if u come from a lower chip and u can wait, then wait.

Yeah and guess if he is unright, i will return to him and blame him down as nobody else, because such lyers piss me off!
