Article about yellow smileys. BTW, the color comes from Sol, the sun. As in, "sunny disposition" is what led to this most famous emoticon.

If you've been thinking it represents white people, you don't get it. Quite literally.

Sadly, most people who use buzzwords don't have any understanding of what they are actually supposed to mean.

You know what would be 100% racism?
If Apple automatically set emoji color by country in your iPhone preferences.

Some people think it's stupid because they believe only white people should be represented in the world.

We call those people "racist".

The best part is that they don't know it.

I'm brown... And I really think this is stupid... And I will vouch that all my brown friends will feel the same... Just a huge waste of time and resources... And not to mention that they are bringing up the racial stigma where there's none and doesn't need to be addressed... They're just giving racism more airtime...

Thank God - those smug little yellow faces mocking me because I don't share their skin color.....its about time someone tackled this incredibly important social issue!

Given the state of American race relations (interestingly reflected by the comments here) why would I want to let anybody know I'm anything other than white?

Emojis were gender/race neutral; Insensitive, naive intentions like this whole thing is introducing even more controversy and tension into the mix.

Suddenly an article about emojis, emojis, had to be put in the Politics, Religion, Social Issues forum.

I mean come on, for the longest time we were cool with these:

:( :)    :p ;) :D  :apple:

Why? WHY???

I'm disgusted by people who complain about things like this. Does it really hurt you so much for other people in the world feel less marginalized?

Any white person who is educated on social issues understand why this is a good thing, but many who don't see the point can't even seem to take a moment to realize that not every feature needs to be geared directly to *their* ego.

The funny thing is that these will very likely be used mostly for racist jokes

E.g. WATERMELON

Terrible, racist idea. Apart from anything else, there are perhaps too many emoticons to choose from already.

The world has moved on from this kind of thing...

I see this creating more issues than it solves. Not in terms of their availability but in terms of how they are used.

Everyone will be afraid to use them because of possible interpretations being placed on their motives.

They should all just be bright yellow in my opinion so they don't represent any particular race and just represent the emotions they are meant to. When we meet some bright yellow aliens I will reconsider my position.

I doubt most people even care about this. I doubt it was something people wrote Apple about. All they are doing is offering more choices now. I just don't understand why some people are so against what might make someone else happier. If you don't care about a yellow emoji now being offered in different colors, cool. If it makes someone else happier, let it.

The people who *care* in this thread are mostly insane, throwing around racist buzzwords like "white privilege".

The rest of us are rightly calling this a joke. We're laughing at how absurd it is and how seriously the usual suspects take this stuff.

All for more emoji's but we have enough PC stuff going on in the world, do we really need to corrupt yet another thing? Does anyone really care there isn't a light skin, dark skin dancing girl/guy?

lol @ "corrupting" the white emoji set with different skin color.

Right..

Seriously? They're bloody emotions.

Exactly. The idea of colors shading any emoji with and RGB color is a nice option. However, someone did a press release saying it is skin tone only to get publicity. And on Election Day in the States while at it.

Clearly you haven't. There's quite a difference between a brown emoticon and black-face.

Wait... you mean to tell me peoples skin tones aren't obnoxiously bright yellow?!

I mean come on. That shade of yellow is about as pigment-neutral as it gets, and provides good contrast. Why all the hubbub over something so inane? If its not broken, don't fix* it...

*Overcomplicate

Nope, it is people like you that seem a little......I think you can finish that sentence.

They look stupid. This is not necessary at all. I really don't think anybody gets offended or feels like the yellow smiley face does not quite represent them enough.

Get a grip.
